Bertie was early to gaming, in fact he was the first one there. He took a seat at their regular table, taking out his dice bag and a notebook whilst he waited. He rolled the D20, noting down its value each time.
What was that weird clattering noise! Iris, not entirely happy to be stuck in the library late on a Friday night, closed the book she'd been reading (not entirely gracefully), picked it up and went to investigate. She found an older boy, sitting at a table by himself, rolling some small rock on the table repeatedly. "What are you doing?" she asked with a hint of mild irritation in her voice.
Bertie looked up, surprised to find someone who wasn’t a member of the gaming club. It was a beginner girl from not-Aladren, which were three more points very much not in the person’s favour.
"Experimenting?" Iris repeated back to the older boy, raising an eyebrow in question. Now that she was closer, she could see that his rock had numbers all over it.
"Sounds to me like you're just making some noise."
Sounded like he was just making noise? Well then, she didnr know much, did she? Bertie was tempted just to shrug at her, and let her be on her way, butthe accusation of making excessive noise in the library did bot sit well with him, even if he was sure it couldn't be that much more than the general background sounds.
He drew his wand, bent low so she might not see his mouth wasn't moving, and signed a shielding charm over the die to muffle the noise.
Iris came to the conclusion that she didn't much care for this boy. He was being rude. He didn't answer her.... well, okay she may not have actually asked a question, but there had been one implied. Instead he just went and made his rock magically quiet which addressed the complaint she had made against it.
Well okay, it wasn't what he was doing, but how he was doing it. She was irritated at the schoolwork that kept her late in the library, the way her day had gone, and now the fact that he wasn't letting her be rationally irritated at him! It was infuriating! "Fine." She said more than a bit curtly, "Play with your weird rock." She should just leave, but for some reason she didn't and she didn't know why and that just irritated her more! And for some reason, which she wasn't sure if yet, it was all his fault.
Now she was in a huff. Why were most girls always in a huff about something? Also... weird rock? He smirked a little. He guessed a d20 was kinda different to a regular die but... well, clear reasons why she wasn't an Aladren.
"I-I was--- going to a-anyway," he answered, not wanting her to think he needed her permission to do anything.
Why were boys so weird! What was he doing with that thing? Why did she care? Gah! Nope, she was done this was strange boy weirdness and that was it. Maybe Billy knew whatever it was but she didn't and decided that she just didn't care anymore. Yes. She had more important things to do rather than just stand around here watching some silly boy play with a silly small rock on a silly table in the silly library.
"Well," she stated a bit stiffly, "Have fun then." She turned to walk off and go back to the Crotalus dorms where things made sense and she could complain about boys to Amethyst.
