Selina Skies

“Good afternoon,” Selina greeted the advanced class once they had settled in their places. “Today, we will continue our lessons on vanishments of different sizes, though we will be moving to the other end of the scale today.” They had already covered extra large vanishments and partial vanishments, and had an ongoing essay for the end of the unit on the challenges of each type.

“As you study, the perception can often be that you need to continually grow bigger and stronger in your spell casting. Whilst that’s important, can anyone name any other factors that it is useful to work on?” She called on a few people until she’d received a few appropriate answers, even though only one of them really related to today’s lesson.

“Precision is what we’ll be looking at today. Being able to target your spell to exactly where you want it. This lines up with partial vanishment, which is why we studied that first. For homework, please answer why today’s work counts as a small, precision vanishment rather than a partial vanishment.

“Today, we will be tackling the problem that sand gets everywhere. You will be given a tray of objects recovered from a beach, and still covered in sand. Your job is to vanish all the sand, to leave the objects totally and utterly clean, without damaging or vanishing any element of the objects themselves. You can, of course, add the name of what you are vanishing onto the ‘evanesco’ spell to make it easier, though I think you’ll still find that you have to hone your concentration very finely to get rid of it all without damaging anything else.

“Six years, you will be working to clean several small metal or wooden objects from your sand piles, whilst seventh years will have sea glass and shells. Who can tell me why?” she asked.

“Good luck, and feel free to practice this after class if you find any of the sand goes with you.” As she was sure it inevitably would. “If you finish ahead of time, please work on your homework questions and essays. You may begin.”

Topaz Brockert

August 06, 2021 6:31 PM
Topaz sighed to herself. She was honestly ready to be done with this place. In addition to obviously wanting to get away from her terrible roommate once and for all, she was a bit bored even with her classes. She was so far ahead of most of her classmates that for the most part everything her professors were teaching was ridiculously easy for her.

Of course, when Topaz was bored, that could definitely be an issue for others as well, especially her siblings and cousins and the animal life of Sonora. She'd been spending a lot of time working on her taxidermy as well as...experimenting with some higher level spells that she'd found in the restrictive section. Not to mention tormenting Sapphire about the upcoming CATS every chance that she got.

Granted, the person that Topaz really wanted to torture was Snotti-Ness but unfortunately the other Aladren was more likely to tattle on her. And that insignificant but obnoxious little insect was not worth expulsion especially when she was so close to the end, to her freedom. However, that was something that the seventh year had to remind herself of daily. Her roommate's presence irked her so much, so very very much. Topaz could only hope that someday that wretched creature would get what was coming to her, even though she would be denied the pleasure of squashing that particular vermin herself.

Honestly, sometimes life could be so unfair. Here was someone who was so very deserving of the techniques that Topaz had honed her life on those who just happened to be convenient and she could only do annoying petty things to her? This was possibly the most grave injustice of all time. Snotti-Ness was much more despicable than any of Topaz's siblings or first cousins. Yes, she'd had to teach her relatives their place and show her complete dominance over them, but still, they had learned. Her roommate was an obnoxious narcissist who was far more entitled than any pureblood she'd ever met, even including Jeremy Mordue!

It's almost over, it's almost over She reminded herself for what felt like the four thousandth time that day alone. It's almost over,it's almost over.

Besides, it wasn't as if she was totally without outlets. There was the petty stuff and her taxidermy of course, and tortmenting her relatives as well as the pictures she'd taken to drawing of Snotti-Ness being attacked by all the wonderful plants they were learning about in Herbology this year.

Professor Skies started the lesson and Topaz sighed to herself once again. This sounded like another incredibly dull one. She already knew how to be very precise with her spells. Just ask Allegra. Although she could see a purpose for this, because sand did indeed get everywhere when they went down to the island and indeed, it was irritating but it was a house-elf problem. They were the ones who were supposed to clean, that was their reason for existence. Topaz obviously found chores to be beneath her, of course and wouldn't be caught dead doing them.

Still, she had to do the assignment, painfully simple though it was. The seventh year sat over the tray, first targeting a piece of sea glass. "Evanesco sand . The sand did as she wished and disappeared. She did the same with the rest of the objects on the tray and then started her homework.
