My darling boy. [Dorian] by Mary Brooding-Hawthorne

Mary had exchanged some letters with Dorian since his graduation and all the tumult that had come with the time immediately following that, but it never quite felt normal still. Most of the time, when someone knocked on her door, she still half expected to see Dorian popping in for tea and a chat and a hug. Between her duties as a professor, her responsibility to her son, and her efforts to support Tabitha as she collated her works and returned to teaching, Mary didn't get many hugs from people outside her own small family these days. Of course, Dorian was family in his own way, and the staff at Sonora were as well, but both were different. It was with hugs in mind that Mary sat down to write her former student a letter, emerald ink hopefully bringing memories of similarly colored school robes.

Dearest Dorian,

It has been far too long since I've seen your lovely face and I hope that it has been finding many reasons to smile lately. I've definitely been trying to myself but you know how the end of the year goes and that's just academically speaking. There are tests to prep for, potions to grade, and work to be done! Still, I love what I do. You know that.

Ailuros misses your cat and Zeus misses your attention. I miss our chats. I wanted to write to see if perhaps you'd like to get together this summer. I know things get hectic fast so I wanted to make sure I reached out with enough time for us to make proper plans. We'll be in Greece most or all of the summer and I would love the company. Tabitha's research will be keeping us homebound this year I think, as she's completed most of the legwork and now must work on putting everything together for publication. I imagine I'll be taking lots of summer walks on the beach with Zeus alone, except when I can drag her out of her den for some sunlight every once in a while! I'm so proud of her but I can't help wishing that academia and the publication process was faster. I'm sure she agrees at this point.

Hoping all is well with you. Pass my love on to you and yours,

Mary
