A slice of magizoology (Advanced) by Lawrence Marsh

A critical eye waved over the tables in front of him. There were enough kits set up on the table for at least every two students, though he didn’t know if there might be some who might object. If any did, that meant he had...Lawrence counted them again, well, it depended on how many students objected. Hopefully it would be none, as this was part of magizoology. After all, how else was one supposed to know all of the parts of a creature. Even doctors in the wizarding world still had to do autopsies to learn about a wizard’s body. The thought sent a slight shudder ran through Lawrence at the thought of his father’s work.

Still, experiencing something affected you differently than reading in books, and for advanced students this dissection was important. He hoped no one would object. He waved his wand to make the kits float behind his desk

As students came in he smiled at them standing behind his desk and offered them individual salutations. He’d now been at the school long enough that he knew all of his advanced students quite well and felt oddly at ease with them, even though not that long ago they had frightened him in a way he couldn’t explain.

Once all students were present he started.

“Hello everyone. Today we are going to do something important for your end of the year tests for seventh years and for sixth years it is to get your used to doing this. Yes I know, it is the beginning of the year, but I want to make sure you feel comfortable with this ability. And for those who wish to follow in your esteemed teachers footsteps, this is actually going to be an important part of your life,” Lawrence paused incase there were any chuckles, good natured, awkward or otherwise.

“Today we will be dissecting a jackalope. Now, I know you have all seen or at least experienced them as the beginners now take care of them. I assure you, we are not dissecting a jackalope who had one of your fellow students as a caretaker, I made sure of that.

You will be partnering with someone else, though we may have an odd number. You will follow the instructions in the packet given and identify the internal pieces of the jackalope. Furthermore, each of these jackalopes have died of natural causes, or at least I’ve been told as much. I request you and your partner to make a hypothesis as to how the animal died and see if you can test that hypothesis once you’ve identified the organs.

Before we continue, I want those of you who have objections, either spiritual or otherwise, to partaking in this exercise, I have a separate exercise. I understand completely, and you will not be penalized what-so-ever. Please come up to me and ask for the alternative instead of a dissection kit. If at any point you can no longer continue with the dissection, that is also fine, you can switch to the alternative task.

Now, if each of you can come up to my desk and I’ll partner you up.”
