Captain Kirstenna Melcher

November 29, 2011 3:24 PM
Oh, dear Merlin. The Imposter was starting to really close in on them. Now she had unleashed a demon on Teppenpaw . As if kidnapping Brian-Kirstenna really hoped he was still alive-boiling Tobar alive, unleashing Renee on the school so she could lead Kirstenna's once best friend into evil and steal her away from the Teppenpaw and everything else wasn't bad enough. Now there was this pale white kid-one of the first years-with red eyes running around her house. It had been all she could do not to scream when she had first seen him.

How a demon managed to get into Teppenpaw the house for those who were kind and compassionate was beyond her. It just went to show that the the Imposter fixed the sorting potions. She (or he) was Deputy Headmistress after all. Kirstenna just hoped that she wouldn't do anything to Headmistress Kijewski like she (or he) had done to previous Headmistress Powell. The fifth year had been glad to see that the woman was still alive though she suspected there was foul play involved in Headmaster Regal's quick disappearance. She'd heard a rumor that he'd had family problems, and Kirstenna would just bet that they were caused by the Imposter.

She was also worried about Sam. Kirstenna had been thinking about him a lot and not always in the sense that he was in danger due to the fact that he was on the Crotalus team with Renee and in the house that the Imposter was head of (though that was why she was worried).Plus the Imposter had taken away Brian and Tobar away from her and might was well have taken Sophia in a way, since she was being totally corrupted by Renee. Merlin only knew what the Imposter had in store for Sam.

Of course, her own head of house wanted to turn everyone into beetles and was marrying Kirstenna's cousin . Which was totally freaky. She was worried the Seth was either willingly or unwillingly the Beetle Lady's accomplice.

But at least that scary demon child had not signed up to play Quidditch. She recognized the names of everyone who had. The fifth year had her old team back from last year. None had disappeared like Brian and Tobar had. That was comforting.

She smiled as they arrived. "All right, since everyone is back this year, we'll just take up the same positions we had. No need for try-outs." Teppenpaw never seemed to need try-outs. Kirstenna reasoned it was because they were nice people who believed in cooperation rather than competition and didn't particularly want to harm anyone and play such a violent bloody game. In a way though, it was good that nobody new signed up because she wouldn't have to hurt anyone's feelings when they didn't get the spot. "Today, we're going to have our Chasers, Andrew, Arista and Laurie try to score on me while Derry and Ben, our Beaters try to take them out. Kate, you can just release the Snitch and try to find it. Um, Solomon, I guess you can practice Chaser and try to score on me as well." With that, the Keeper released the balls and flew up to take her spot in front of the hoops.

Andrew sauntered out to the pitch. As usual when it came to Quittich try-outs and practices, he was in a good mood. He carried his trusty broom on his shoulder and his robe billowed dramatically in the wind. It was a good day for flying. Earlier this morning he had, very briefly, considered the idea of not showing up for try-outs. He dismissed it as a ludicrous idea, he had already signed up, he had to come. Still, Quidditch would be an interesting thing this year. Not only was his best friend, Jose, captaining the Pecari team; but, his girl, Marissa, was captaining the Crotalus team. He thanked the fourth-year version of himself for burying himself in his studies and not signing up for Quidditch that year. Otherwise he may have become the Teppenpaw captain, and that would just make this year all sorts of awkward on the pitch.

He arrived on the pitch and greeted Kirstenna and the others as they arrived. It looked like they had the same team from last year, that had to give them some kind of advantage, didn't it? No new people to get up to speed on tactics and such, no worries about making the team. Hmm... Andrew realized it was probably a good thing he came out after all. Not like he actually could have skipped playing his last year. Kirstenna made her speech short and sweet, no introductions or anything necessary so they just started a practice session. Good plan.

In a flash, he was on his broom and had recovered the Quaffle before it could hit the ground from the captain's toss. He soared into the sky, a familiar sense of freedom washing over him once more. Flying was awesome. It was to bad he hadn't packed his broom for his 'summer vacation' with the parents. That may have saved them a lot of problems. Oh well, he looked around and spotted one of his fellow chasers. With a shout out to them, he passed the ball and began maneuvering closer to the goals.

Laurie was somewhat miffed about the fact that he hadn’t reached his goal of becoming a beater, again. He liked chasing, but he preferred to smack bludgers around, but he wasn’t going to turn down the chance to play Quidditch. Plus, the sport was one of the many things he loved about the school, and he was not going to forgo such an amazing thing because of a whim. And he couldn’t let his fellow Teppenpaws downs by suddenly quitting the team because he hadn’t made beater.

The redhead grabbed all of Quidditch stuff and left his room in the flash of a second; he was really excited about the QUidditch season beginning. He was quite sure they would do better this year. The Teppenpaw wanted, no more like needed to beat Preston at this. It wasn’t really fair that his older cousin had everything he wanted when it came to the best sport since the beginning of time. Preston didn’t even like Quidditch. The smaller redhead was going to do everything in his power to score a lot of goals to win this time.

He entered the pitch and waved happily at everyone. His green-eyes looked around and realized that the people assembled were the same he had played with last year. He blinked and smiled. Maybe this was a good thing! No new players that needed more practice and the like. Laurie had practiced a lot his chasing skills during the summer. He was confident that he was a better chaser than last year and that was a lot to say. Laurie had kind of sucked. But that was left in the past. His father had told him that he had obviously evolved into a better chaser. It was awesome having a former professional player for a father, really. He had asked one of his friends to help him with his practices, and not everyone had the fortune of practicing with a professional player.

Laurie was feeling pretty confident as he mounted his broom to start chasing away. The rush of the wind in his hair felt awesome, his skin cooling down, his green-eyes sharpening into watching every movement from his fellow team-mates. He saw Andrew catch the quaffle and then shout at him. He grinned and flew faster to catch up with him. Laurie easily caught the quaffle that his older team mate sent his way. Laurie flew forward and before he was at the goal posts, he looked behind and passed the ball to the nearest chaser.

Kate hurried into Quidditch practice just shy of late, flushed from both running back from the Teppenpaw commons and with embarrassment. She had left in plenty of time, but had realized halfway down that she’d forgotten her Assistant Captain’s badge, and she’d had to run back to get it, then run again to get to the Pitch on time.

Luckily for her, at least in this moment, there weren’t any alternates to worry about. If they had gone through the formality of a try-out, she would have looked pretty bad if she had been late. With the team still the same group, she still didn’t look too good, but at least they knew her already and wouldn’t think too much worse of her than they already did, whereas new people…well, they wouldn’t have been impressed. She guessed she might regret not having an alternate more once the games got going if it was a violent year, but she was hoping against that. Last year hadn’t been too bad, as far as that went. Not nearly as bad as the year before it, anyway.

She nodded when she was told to just go practice with the Snitch. “Yeah,” she said with a smile, then wasn’t sure what to do for a moment – if she should go on right then, or wait until the team broke up into its play. She finally went with that second option, since it seemed safer, and then she released the Snitch, gave it a good lead, and then flew after it.

She’d be hot again later, when she got off the broom, but right now, the speeding air felt cool against her cheeks and the back of her neck as it lifted her long, light-brown ponytail off of it. She made a few loops for pleasure, then began to really look, scanning the field, her eyes moving around the movements of the other players to search for the Snitch. It wasn’t as crowded and moving as it would be during the actual games, but it was good enough for practice when she hadn’t been able to fly all summer. Momma, perhaps remembering her own time as Crotalus Quidditch captain, wouldn’t fully forbid her from playing, write to someone at the school and say that, but she didn’t let her practice much over the summer. Only when she was at Dad’s, usually, and she wasn’t there very long even when she was and then she didn’t have a Snitch to really work with, though Dad had come up with the idea of charming a golf ball for her before she had to leave again.

Derry Four

Derry was looking forward to another year of Quidditch. He'd gotten Thad to whack a bludger around with him some over summer, so he was already in practice even after the long vacation. Not quite as much as he had been with regular practices, of course, but enough that he was sure he hadn't lost his edge. It wasn't like there was a lot else to do at home, aside from Hamlet's boring lessons and an occasional walk through the woods with his mom.

It was especially good that Ben signed up again. Derry worked well with his roommate and best friend, and it was cool that they got to be on the team together. Plus his sister was a great beater, too, and Derry was hoping he'd get to visit again and get some more lessons from her. Maybe this New Years again. He'd have to ask Ben about that later.

Now, with the whole team back - which he gathered didn't happen very often, what with graduations and Coach Pierce making people disappear for some Dark purpose and all - they were getting right back into practice mode. Derry launched into the air on his very fine broom, shifted the bat around in his grip until he found the right hold, and looked for a practice bludger.

Spotting one, he flew over to it and stole a quick glance at the Chasers, trying to pick his target. It didn't take long. The Chaser nearest to his position was also the one Laurie had just thrown the Quaffle to. Derry swung the bat and sent a black ball at the same person the red ball was also streaking toward.

He had to work hard to quell the urge to yell a warning or rush after it in an attempt to protect his teammate, but Kirstenna had put him and Ben on offensive beating duty today. It was up to the Chasers to defend themselves today.
