Examiner Trenton

With the end-of-year concert preparations blossoming away in Cascade Hall as they prepared for the coming event, exams had been moved to the Elective Hall, where there were plenty of unused (or unused right now at least) classrooms available and space to set up for all of the fifth and seventh year students to take their tests. The concert was still a few weeks away but it was easiest to avoid setting up for testing and then tearing down and then setting up for the concert and then tearing down and . . . best to use other available space. Groups were separated by year - it was always a bit disconcerting for the fifth year students when a seventh year broke down crying in the middle of a test - but the instructions were given out all at once, since both operated the same way.

Examiner Trenton, wearing his friendliest, sunniest yellow robes, beamed at the students as they gathered. His bald head was oiled and gleaming and his bright white smile stood out especially starkly against his rich mahogany skin.

"Hello, students," he greeted them, his booming voice and heavy Nigerian accent reverberating through his grin, "Today is the start of examinations. I am sure you are all very excited!"

The gathered students did not, on the whole, look excited.

"Fifth year students, you will be in the classrooms on the right. Seventh years, on the left. You will all be given paper, ink, and quills. Please have your wands with you but leave anything else you've brought by the door. You will be using anti-cheating ink, so you can't use pencils unfortunately, but feel free to scratch out and rewrite answers if necessary, and you will be given extra paper to write on if you need it. If you are caught trying to cheat, there will be severe consequences." It was the one time throughout his entire speech that Examiner Trenton didn't smile, because he really hated it when people cheated and effectively screwed themselves out of a good time. His friendly demeanor returned as he continued. "Bathrooms in this area may be used during breaks, and you will have access to snacks and drinks on breaks as well. There will be breaks between each subject test and between the written and practical examinations."

He gestured at the other examiners, none of whom looked half so excitable as he did but who otherwise varied from friendly to cold, both in their expressions and their attire. "We will be available to help should you have questions, but we cannot explain any of the test questions to you. Students with testing accommodations, you should have a slip of approval explaining those and will be accommodated based on that slip."

These tests, he knew, were important. RATS students would be leaving school for good after this, while others would be transferring their scores to colleges, trade programs, or careers. CATS students would be using these scores to decide what classes they'd be taking from here out and which subjects they'd be testing in when their own RATS came. All in all, it was an important day for all of these students and Examiner Trenton couldn't be more excited or proud of them had he actually known any of them personally. As such, he clapped his hands together excitedly and then spread them out as if he could embrace the whole lot of students gathered there.

"Test well!" he beamed, and then everyone moved as the other examiners began ushering students in the correct direction, passing out supplies and, once students arrived to their seats in their proper rooms, providing more detailed instructions for their first exam. Examiner Trenton remained where he was in case anyone had questions before they began and then he would wander from room to room, helping ensure everyone had as wonderful a time as they could.

It was time for RATS and for Beau, the end of his academic career. He could not be happier about this. Of course, he wasn't excited about the actual test taking bit, though he wasn't really nervous either because he just plain did not care what he got as long as he did not completely bomb them. Which wasn't going to happen given that there was a practical component and Beau, while not a great student, was a decent wizard. More than a decent wizard, if he did say so himself.

He was excited just the part where he would no longer have to study. Not that the Pecari had ever done much of that in the first place but now Beau would never have to crack a book again. At least, he sincerely hoped not. He wasn't even all that into reading non-academic books. And he wouldn't have to sit through boring theory lessons any more. The seventh year did not care about how magic worked or how spells were created or anything of the sort and after today, he would never have to think about it again.

Of course, Beau was not thrilled to be awake right now. One reason he'd picked Charms and Transfiguration, aside from them being wand based and his superior skill at the practical part of the latter, was because they were afternoon classes. And to top it off, the examiner was being way too cheerful for this time of day and for the task at hand. Of course, he wasn't the one taking an exam that was a big deal for people who weren't Beau. Still, what kind of sadist was this guy to be so cheerful and happy when most people probably were on the verge of a nervous breakdown ? Maybe he was like, high or something. If so, the Pecari wanted some!

Or he was the sort that was seriously excited by academia. Beau found that completely unfathomable.

Beau found himself being ushered into the proper room for the written RATS exam. He opened up his test and looked at the first question on the Transfiguration portion. He made a face and moved on to the second one. And then made another face.

Oh well, it wasn't as if it really mattered how well he did. Besides, he would do well on the practical part for sure.
