Snitching [Miss Selina] by Zeus Brooding-Hawthorne-Smith

Mommy said that Miss Selina was sad because she hurt some people's feelings by accident. Zeus didn't know a lot of things but he knew that it was real easy to hurt people's feelings by accident. Sometimes, he thought that maybe they pretended their feelings were hurt, like when he got sad and threw something and mommy said it hurt the toy's feelings to get thrown, but he wasn't totally sure so he wasn't going to argue about that. He knew he shouldn't throw things when he was sad but he didn't know how to not get sad sometimes; that was another thing Zeus didn't know and it sounded like Miss Selina didn't know it either.

Sometimes when he was really sad, Mommy or Daddy would give him cuddles and nice words and smiles and based on all the gloomy faces going around Sonora right now, Zeus thought that Mommy was right when she said that Miss Selina needed some nice words and stuff too. Zeus could do that! That was one thing he did know about!

Mommy tried to explain about some of the weird stuff people were upset about but Zeus didn't really understand. But he understood that some of his toys - a plush dragon and a plush snitch - might mean something to Miss Selina. Mommy said that Miss Selina was afraid she'd hurt his feelings and that it would be good for him to be able to tell her she hadn't. His plush dragon had been a very good friend to him but Circle, the snitch, was meant to be a good friend to everyone. That was what snitches did. So he'd brought them both but he had special plans for Circle.

Mommy knocked on Miss Selina's door and when Miss Selina said they could come in, Mommy opened the door and pushed him through and shut it between them. She had that smile on her face that she had when they were going to try to surprise Daddy with something silly too so Zeus thought that maybe it was okay to be a little bit silly, but Miss Selina looked tired so he didn't want to be too silly.

"Hiya," he said, smiling at her as he crossed the room and climbed into the chair across the desk from her. He liked sitting on her lap and stuff but he was getting big and Mommy said he had to sit in chairs sometimes instead, but the desk was too tall so he sat on his knees so he could see Miss Selina. "Mommy said you were sad and that you might like to see my toys," he explained, putting the dragon and the snitch on the desk so she could see them. Set up that way, they were exactly the same as they'd been in the picture Mommy had seen in Cascade Hall, but Zeus didn't know that.

He nudged the snitch towards her. "This is Circle," he said very seriously. "And he's a good friend. But Mommy said you need a good friend right now? So I wanted to share. You can keep him but only until you aren't sad anymore," he added because he wanted to share but he didn't want to share forever. He wasn't about to take no for an answer though, and he demonstrated this by taking the dragon back into his own arms and playing with him in his lap. "Do you want a hug too?" he asked.

Knocks on your door, as a head of house and deputy headmistress, rarely spelt out good things. Students in distress, angry parents... However, in the wake of the penseive incident, she was sure she was practically tensing at the sound of it. She took a breath, making sure she sounded calmer and more capable than she felt, as she called 'Come in,' and looked up from her stack of papers. And then down. Because for all she was pretty sure she had caught a glimpse of a smiling Mary Brooding-Hawthorne, her main visitor appeared to be Zeus. Well, Zeus plus two familiar guests. She had known the plushie dragon when she put the poster up, having been the one to gift it to him in the first place. She really hoped this was not about his memories. She was not under the impression his had been upsetting, and whilst Mary had some odd ideas about independence and letting a five year old have control over decisions, Selina really hoped that didn't extend to expecting him to discuss this with her on his own if he was upset.

"Hello," she said, when he greeted her, smiling a little more genuinely than she had in some time as he explained his reasons for being there, as it quickly became apparent that Zeus' feelings were not the ones that were being worried about right now. She didn't mind that Mary had spoken to him about the situation - he lived there too, had been affected, and had just as much right to an explanation as anyone else. She just had not expected her own feelings to be their main concern, and certainly would have taken a very, very long time to think up this solution herself. Adults could be ever so silly like that sometimes.

"That's very kind of you. Yes, that would cheer me up ever so much," she promised when he offered to share with her.

She reached out, taking Circle from the Future Teppenpaw, and crossing her arms around the toy so it was squeezed against her chest. It was a very kind offer, although she suspected that Zeus might not know quite how long adults could be sad for. Not that she thought he lacked any insight on the feeling - she was not going to forget that he had lost both his parents, and probably knew what it was like to carry something with you that never quite went away. She just didn't know whether he realised yet that that could happen to grown ups too, or whether he thought they had magical self-healing powers. She would check with Mary when it was time to go whether she should be all done being sad now, or whether it could wait until after dinner, or even until morning. The last thing she wanted was Zeus waking up in the night distraught about his own act of kindness when he missed his toy, but she also thought his gesture deserved to be taken seriously. He clearly wanted to help, and she wanted to let him help as much as he could.

"That would definitely help too," she nodded when he offered her a hug. She was doing a really excellent job of not crying. She was pretty sure that 'happy tears' would be a confusing concept, as well as partially untrue. They would more be tears of relief that there was still niceness in the world, and that not all of her personal relationships had been damaged by what she had done. She allowed herself a moment of not being visibly fine, once Zeus was safely close enough to her for it to be quite literally over his head. She closed her eyes, squeezing down the mistiness in them, and concentrating on all the good parts of having a little boy, his dragon, and a big cuddly Snitch piled into her arms.

"Would you like a candy?" she offered in a conspiratorial tone, sliding open a little drawer in her desk that Zeus knew quite well.
