Pair up and Square up [Adv] by Isis Carter-Xavier

“Alright, let’s get settled,” said Isis curtly. It was the advanced class, so the students were old enough to know to mind themselves, and thus were given a bit less slack. It was on them if they were going to show up on time or at all, but once they were here, they were required to conduct themselves appropriately. Plus, Isis was just a teensy bit sleep deprived after a long night with an emotionally compromised infant, so she was definitely feeling a bit edgy herself.

“Today, you will be pairing up to practice nonverbal defensive and offensive spells,” she explained. “You will take turns casting minor jinxes and hexes through nonverbal magic, and likewise, the other person will defend the same way. Try not to pair up with anyone you usually pick - part of the exercise is about surprise. We don’t want you to be able to predict each other, or at least as much as it can be helped.” The class was relatively small, so the combinations of students were limited, but there were always friends and friend groups, and ideally, they needed to separate. Whether they would, however, was again on them.

“Everyone come up to the front of the room so that I can push the desks away.” When the area was clear, Isis did as she forewarned, creating an open area for pairs to line up against one another. “Alright, find a partner and have at it. I’ll be keeping an eye on things, but once again, stick to minor hexes.”

All right by Beau Tate

Of the three classes that Beau was still taking, he liked Defense Against The Dark Arts the best. Or at least, hated it the least. Okay, he supposed he liked the practical bits of Transfig as they came fairly easily to him, but in DADA, they sometimes got to get up and move a bit. There was, after all, a reason why Beau was in Pecari. It wasn't just process of elimination. Especially given that he considered himself plenty nice and plenty respectable. Although, he was generally glad not to have been a Crotalus since Arianna had still been here when he was sorted.

Still, Beau liked action and considered himself to be fairly athletic. True, he'd never gone out for Quidditch but that was because he hated responsibilities, and that's what being involved in school activities was. They were a chore and anyway, he wasn't a dork. However, he did like to hang out in the sports room at times.

Although, honestly, he wished that instead of MARS, they had something more...fun. Like the whole thing except the water room seemed to be about building skills and talents which if you weren't into music, dance, art or sports, didn't benefit you at all. Also, more obnoxiously, it seemed to be focused on "self improvement" rather than just plain having fun. It was talent-ist, something that showed favoritism towards the students who had some extra talent.

The good news was that Beau would be gone soon and it wasn't worth caring about now. Most things weren't. Soon he'd be off to a life of endless hedonism, regardless of what his dad thought, and all things Sonora would be a distant memory.

Anyway, today's lesson was the sort that Beau generally enjoyed. Dueling was generally fun as long as people didn't get too competitive, as it was just a class. In all honesty, the sixth year had sort of an aversion to competitiveness as well as self-improvement and ambition because of what his sister was like.

He approached a classmate whom he didn't think would take things so seriously and asked "Do you want to partner up?"
