Three months ago, Tabitha had said a temporary farewell to her teaching position as Defence Against the Dark Arts professor and to Sonora Academy to pursue an incredibly exciting position at a dragon sanctuary in New Zealand. Darius, with his many connections, had secured her a position within a very small group of wizards who were working to protect the small number of remaining Antipodean Opaleye dragons and, indeed, increase their numbers. It had been an opportunity that she had jumped at. It was the only species of dragon she had never seen, documented or sketched. The chance for her to see these beautiful creatures and to spend real time with them has been handed to her on a silver platter and she would have been a fool to turn it down.
Despite the incredible experience, Tabitha couldn’t say that it had been perfect. She had had to leave behind her wife and son and her teaching position. Even though it was temporary, she had still left for New Zealand with a rather lot of guilt, even if Mary had supported her decision to go. She had written many letters to her wife and her son, attached many drawings, sent many little gifts (some shed scales, a bit of broken claw, the cracked shell of an egg) along with many photos of herself and her new friends, both wizard and dragon alike (those had come with strict instructions for Mary to show Zeus every day so that he wouldn’t forget what his ‘Daddy’ looked like).
She had missed Sonora and her family terribly and found herself feeling very warm as she stepped into the empty Brooding-Hawthorne quarters for the first time in several months.
Tabitha dropped her large rucksack near the door and kicked off her boots, letting out a tired sigh as she padded over to the sofa. It had been a long journey back home, involving a lot of trekking (the sanctuary had been in the middle of nowhere, understandably), a lot of flying (by broomstick, not dragon) and a number of portkeys. She was exhausted and Tabitha let her head fall back, letting it rest on the back of the sofa, her eyes closing and her nose inhaling that wonderful scent of jasmine that indicated that her wife lived in these quarters. Mary was probably still teaching which would mean that Zeus was probably in the care of Isis and while Tabitha knew she needed to see Selina, she was tired and she always took any excuse to delay seeing the Deputy Headmistress. The only thing left to do now was to wait for her family’s return. She just hoped that they had both missed her as much as Tabitha had missed them.

Three months ago, Mary's life had gotten much harder and sadder and lonelier and suckier. She was still a generally happy person, especially with the inclusion of her son and her students and most of the things she loved in life, but she missed Dorian already and now, with Tabitha far away . . . well, there was only so much void-filling letters and pictures could do, especially when every picture just reminded her that she was the one mourning the fact that her wife was experiencing what amounted to a dream come true. It was the sort of grief that also made her feel guilty, which was pretty familiar, but not like this. There was a difference, it turned out, between survivor's guilt and the guilt of a woman who just felt left behind. Or maybe there was no difference at all. She just hoped that Tabitha would come back.
Recent letters had suggested that might be a possibility and she held on to that hope - although not too strongly, for the sake of survival - each day. She made her way from dinner to collect Zeus and then return to the rooms she shared with-- with Zeus. Yawning and rubbing her eyes, she would have sworn it was her wife she saw there when she got back though. Blinking rapidly to clear her eyes, she realized it really was.
Without meaning to, she let out an excited shriek and practically leapt across whatever furniture was between her and the woman she had missed so so much. All she wanted in the world was to hold her, to know she was here and okay, and to know that she was loved too. Zeus apparently had the same idea - okay so probably a slightly different idea because Mary quickly noticed that here wife was also very good looking - as he crossed the room to join the hug assault Mary launched on Tabitha.
"You're home!" she shrieked. "Merlin, I love you so much, Tabs," she said, kissing whatever part of her she could reach while also hugging her as tightly as she could. The effect was that all three of them fell back onto Tabitha and onto the couch, and Zeus quickly scrambled up to gain his seat there too. "I love you so much," Mary said again, whispering now that she was close enough to just nuzzle against Tabitha's cheek and breathe in all her favorite smells in the world.
