Johana Leonie was not sure whether she'd been wrong exactly. After all, Freddie absolutely would ruin her chances at climbing any social ladders, and he absolutely was weird, and this absolutely was not how boys were supposed to behave. Except that maybe Johana Leonie's ideas of how boys were supposed to behave weren't the same as other people's ideas, and that was also okay? Whether or not she wanted to climb social ladders was sort of something to put aside when her life had begun to include all the pretty things she'd always wanted and when she was pretty sure that Kai liked her and that might turn into something. She didn't need a ladder, just a hand up. Which brought her back to thinking that maybe she had been wrong after all.
The winter break was ending soon and they would be back off to school. Johana Leonie had felt disconnected from her family for a bit and spent most of her time outside, or else inside and preoccupied with her own hobbies when it was too cold or dark to be outside. She'd taken up crocheting at some point and decided to make a number of items for her friends. For Jessica, a pair of fuzzy pink gloves. For Zara and Bridget, hats in Teppenpaw house colors. For Sophia, a hat in German flag colors. For Hilda, a brownish-reddish headwarmer the color of a bludger and a pair of matching fingerless gloves. For Friederike Albert... well, she'd already given him a present.
But she did have some yarn in the colors he'd put in his hair. And she did have some time . . . she wouldn't finish before the end of break, and it might take her a few weeks after they got back to school too . . . maybe there were other colors he'd prefer. Maybe it wasn't the colors so much as the gesture though. And maybe if she tried hard enough, then by the time she was done, all of her questions and confusions would be answered. Maybe. Just maybe.
