Doing the asking for helps. [Malikhi] by Freddie Zauberhexen

Freddie had made a decision. Hana wasn't talking to him still and she'd left him out of Kai's birthday celebrations, an occasion which she had previously talked a great deal about. Freddie was lacking sorely in the male friend department. Of course, his roommate was nice, but they weren't really very close. Both the fact that he and his sister weren't speaking, and the fact that he didn't have guy friends could be fixed at the same time, he thought, so he was going to make that happen. He had high hopes that talking to a guy about these things first might be more helpful than going straight to Anya or Ellie which he really needed to do at some point. That was one conversation (two conversations?) he was not eager to have. So he went down to breakfast with a goal in mind and sleepers in his eyes, and took a seat beside Kai at the Pecari table.

Stabbing a couple of sausages and potatoes for his own meal, Freddie looked at Kai and nodded firmly. He was a direct, straightforward sort of person and Kai probably wasn't surprised by that, but it was still early and he didn't want to completely shake the poor guy.

"Hana has said we do not talk now?" he confirmed first, jumping to the point without really meaning to. "I wanted if you help me. Ich wears eine dress und Hana says is bad. That she tells you, no? She says I am sick, she tells you? But you are boy. You can do me helping?"

I think I may need help in understanding. by Malikhi Hill

Malikhi hadn't slept very well and yawned several times as he traipsed down to Cascade Hall for his breakfast. As much as he would've loved to stay in bed and attempt to make up for the lost hours in the night, he still had classes to attend and he doubted 'I didn't sleep well and was tired' would pass as a decent excuse to miss them. So, he had managed to dress himself but it was by no means tidy (he hadn't even tried to do up his tie) and hoped that after some breakfast, he might feel ready to face the day.

After taking a seat in his usual place at the Pecari table, Malikhi stabbed a couple of sausages to bring them to his plate and also helped himself to some buttered toast, bacon and eggs. Just as he was about to tuck in, none other than Hana's brother had plonked himself down next to him. Malikhi blinked blearily at him, a little confused as to why Freddie was sitting at the Pecari table rather than Teppenpaw but in the same moment, decided that he was too tired to care. He returned Freddie's firm nod (it was nice to see someone was so confident and sure of themselves so early in the morning) and turned his eyes back to his breakfast. If Freddie wanted to eat his breakfast next to Malikhi, that was fine.

He hadn't, perhaps quite stupidly, anticipated that there would be talking. He wasn't entirely sure but there seemed to be questions which felt rather daunting. Questions generally required answers and given that Malikhi was barely capable of keeping his head up, this didn't seem like it was going to go well.

He tried to untangle the mix of English and German and tried to understand why Hana's name was cropping up and there was definitely something about a dress. Malikhi wondered if the conversation was about the ball. Hana had looked very pretty in her dress. Then, there was something about Freddie being sick and asking for help? If Freddie wasn't feeling well, then he should probably go to the infirmary. Malikhi squinted at him. He didn't seem sick.

Malikhi was completely confused and decided the best thing to do was to try and start the conversation again. He set down his knife and fork and turned his full attention to the younger boy.

"What's wrong?" he asked. "Explain again but... slower. I will try and help you."

Ah, verstehe. by Freddie Zauberhexen

Kai was very sleepy. Or else Freddie was very jumbly. Or possibly both. He grinned, well aware that his English was a bit of a mess today, and nodded, confirming his willingness to try again. The thought momentarily crossed his mind that Kai might not know. That Hana might be too embarrassed and not have said anything. But he doubted that was likely. What use were good friends if you couldn't tell them stuff? Granted, Freddie hadn't told his close friends yet, but that was different. His best friends were the opposi-- okay so maybe it wasn't different. But he still needed help and Kai was the closest dude person he knew. Did that make him selfish? Was he about to make things even harder for his sister than he already had? He hesitated but realised he didn't have a lot of other options. Any other options. Perhaps he could go to Ellie or Anya first but this was a family matter and Kai knew Hana better than Freddie's own friends did.

"On summer, I wear dress," he said quietly, looking around to make sure no one could hear him and taking a quick bite of potato to give Kai a moment to process. "Hana says I have sick. She does not talk to me. She tells you, yes? I thinks that you are boy and I am boy and Hana says I am sick because I am boy and wear dress. I thinks that you can help me?"

Yeah, what you said. by Malikhi Hill

Even though Malikhi was putting every effort into understanding what Freddie’s problem was and the boy had been considerate and slowed down his explanation, Malikhi was still struggling to understand. He frowned, mulling over his words. So... Freddie had tried wearing a dress? That seemed like an odd thing to do. Malikhi couldn’t imagine doing it himself. He couldn’t really understand dresses. What was the point of them, exactly? They didn’t seem like the most practical of things to wear. Girls looked pretty in them but sometimes they seemed like a rather risky thing to wear, especially on windy days. Trousers or shorts seemed much more sensible. Still, Freddie seemed rather troubled and worried and Malikhi wanted to try and help.

“Why were you wearing a dress?” he asked. He wanted to try and look at the situation from the boy’s perspective. Maybe Freddie had seen something that Malikhi couldn’t.

He frowned deeply when Freddie mentioned Hana. She knew about Freddie wearing the dress? She hadn’t said anything and from Freddie’s tone, she didn’t seem like she had taken finding him in a dress well. Malikhi was confused. Why hadn’t she told them? They were friends, weren’t they? Even, perhaps, more than that? Malikhi had certainly considered them close. Didn’t two people who were close confide in each other? And why wasn’t she talking to her own brother about it? Malikhi didn’t have any siblings of his own but if it had been him, he would’ve asked questions. He wanted to ask questions now!

“She... didn’t tell me,” he murmured, confusion and hurt in his voice. He realised, in the more intelligent part of his brain, that he didn’t really have the right to be hurt. After all, he hadn’t told Hana everything. There were some things that he had kept to himself, out of fear of judgement or being treated differently. He wondered if maybe Hana felt the same way. Still, the more emotional side of him was hurt. “Why do you think I can help you?”

Good. by Freddie Zauberhexen

Freddie frowned a little, not sure how to answer that question. "Dress is pretty and fluffy," he said, shrugging. "I want to wear pretty thing. Feel nice and go wooosh. My dress is so soft, like water. Es ist sehr schön. I like feeling," he said, shrugging again. Was that the right answer? Dresses were beautiful, so why not want to wear them? They looked great on other people and that was like ninety percent of how Freddie decided his own wardrobe. First, was it comfortable? Second, did it look awesome? Dresses checked both of those boxes in his book.

But Kai said that Hana hadn't told him. Freddie was breaking the news for the first time, right now? He blushed fiercely. It was hard to embarrass him usually, but he had definitely come to associate wearing dresses with family shame. Perhaps Hana's tactic was effective. He decided right then that he would talk to Ellie and Anya sooner rather than later.

"Aus die Maus," he said to himself, frowning deeper. "I not mean that I tell you before Hana tells. I not know she has much shame." Whatever that was about, the older boy still seemed willing to help and Freddie was getting desperate. "I want know if a boy wears dress, means that he has sick? Hana says I have family shame. But I say I wear pretty thing. Is that wrong?"

Great! by Malikhi Hill

Malikhi thought that Freddie's reasoning for wearing a dress was pretty simple and logical. He'd worn it because it felt nice. It was still odd though, that was for sure. Trying to look at it from Hana's perspective, it also sort of made sense as to why she hadn't said anything and seemed to be embarrassed. Boys didn't wear dresses. Or, at least, Malikhi had never seen a boy wear a dress and had never worn one himself. He'd never thought about wearing one until Freddie brought it up. Malikhi had always considered dresses to be something that girls tended to wear. He just assumed that wearing dresses was something boys didn't or couldn't do. Then again, he'd seen in history books that men in Scotland had those skirts... So, maybe boys could wear skirts and dresses? He'd never read a book that said they couldn't.

It was a confusing matter. Who could wear dresses? Who wasn't allowed? If it was just girls, why did they have exclusive rights to wear dresses? Who decided all these rules about who could wear what and where was the rulebook? Malikhi had many, many questions and he could understand why Hana was struggling to come to terms with what she'd seen. Still, there was one thing that Malikhi was pretty sure of, despite all of the unknowns. If Freddie wanted to wear a dress, then that was okay. From the sounds of things, he hadn't hurt anybody by wearing the dress. He'd enjoyed it too, which Malikhi viewed as a good thing. Everybody should do things they enjoy when they can or they would just be miserable all the time.

"I don't think you're sick," Malikhi said finally and, perhaps more importantly, he said it with confidence. He didn't want to leave any room for doubt in what was an important matter. "You're different but that's okay because you haven't hurt anyone, right? And... if everyone was the same, the world would be pretty boring, right?"

He smiled then, a wide grin that showed all his teeth. He wanted to show Freddie that if he wanted to wear a dress, then that was fine with Malikhi.
