It looked set to be an interesting year. That was quite concerning, given that they were only a few hours into it, although some of the warning signs had been building over the summer. On the surface of it, they were all things that should have been good. New small humans, a much-deserved head boy badge, new opportunities… The reactions and the fall out from those though, looked like it might need a close eye keeping on it. And that was not to mention whatever private melodramas were going on in the heads of the students or between them, undetected by the staff for now. ‘For now’ being the key phrase there. Those were the kinds of conflicts that reached their attention usually only when they hit crisis point.
To that end, thank goodness for profiteroles. Whatever lay head, there was currently chocolate, cream and choux pastry.
As the evidence of this faded from the plates in front of them (though no doubt would linger on the waistline) Selina got up, dabbed her lips to ensure they were not smeared with chocolate sauce, and made her way over to collect her new Crotali.
“Gather round, please,” she called, to make sure she had all of them within easy talking distance. “Welcome to Sonora. I’m Professor Skies, your Head of House. Please follow me, and we will make our way to Crotalus.”
She led them out of the hall, pointing out useful landmarks as they went, peppered with useful little bits of information about the school, or magical life in general (‘As you can see, the portraits move and they can go and visit each other - they cannot however, leave their frames in the sense of coming into our world.’ It perhaps seemed obvious, but apparently if you hadn’t grown up with magic and you suddenly saw one move, that was the kind of thing you might have nightmares about, apparently).
“As you will see when we round our next corner, not all of the portraits here are terribly pretty. Sometimes a slightly… unusual subject matter gets chosen. That happens to be the case with Gunther, the portrait which guards Crotalus Common Room. He is an animated corpse, but he does his job very well, and I’d ask that you speak politely to him,” she cautioned them.
“The password is currently integration” she stated, as they rounded the corner, the portrait swinging open as she said this. It was an idea she had started trying out since the fist fight last year - instead of random bits of potions or magical catchphrases, why not have them remind themselves of the values she expected of them on their way in? She was not sure she had sufficient data to make a real scientific study out of this practise, but she figured it couldn’t hurt. She was tempted to slip some non-magical technologies in there as well to promote them to learn new things. It might have been a more fitting attitude for the head of Aladren to take, but it still seemed like a fun idea.
“Welcome to Crotalus,” she smiled, once they were all inside, “Some practicalities - passwords change monthly and are displayed on the notice board, alongside information about clubs. Quidditch is currently played as a whole school team, and notices about that are most likely to appear in Cascade Hall. I imagine notices about the charity fair will start appearing there or on house notice boards too, once people start planning their meetings.
“Curfew is at ten and you are required to be back in the common room by then, and keep the noise down after that time. Girls dormitories are on the right and boys are on the left. If you get it wrong, the corridor will throw you back into the common room, not particularly gently.
“Your house should be treated like your home. This is a place that I hope you can come to for peace and quiet, to rest and feel comfortable,” she was trying to modify the way she said that slightly, as after all not everyone had a home they could comfortably relax in - but it was still the feeling she hoped they would achieve with their home at school. “A home most often achieves those things and runs smoothly when people are polite and respectful of each other. That goes for everything from not leaving dirty socks on your bedroom floor to treating those who are different from you with kindness and respect. You may not like everyone that you live with, but they are as entitled as you are to feel at ease, and you will need to show that in the way you behave towards each other.
“If you have any questions, you may come to me or any of the prefects - Peyton O’Malley, Caitlin Pierce or Allegra Brockert. Peyton also has the honour of being head girl this year. The school’s head boy is in Teppenpaw this year - but prefects of other houses are also owed your respect,” she added. In fact, all students were. All teachers were. Whilst she wanted them to live together cohesively in Crotalus, she also wanted them to just not be jerks to anybody. “Does anyone have any questions now?” she asked.
OOC - welcome to Crotalus. You are now free to post on any board except other houses and the staff/prefect lounge. You may continue your threads at the feast as well as posting here. This does not mean your character is in two places at once, as we operate under fuzzy time, whereby the time passing in the real world is not the same as Sonora - so long as threads are set at different times and do not have an effect on each other, you can be in multiple threads at once. You are not obliged to reply to this post but may do so if your character has questions to ask. Enjoy!
