Bonny Row

Without warning, the clouds suddenly opened up and started pouring down rain, and Bonny was convinced it was a sign. While she wasn't a big fan of her books and things getting wet, she really did need a break from studying. Perhaps this was just the right time . . .

Just as she took her first leap and jumped into the nearest puddle, she noticed the approach of another student. Standing ankle deep in a grassy, muddy hole of rainwater, she grinned at the approaching student, a flush of color on her cheeks.

"Hi," she said, wondering whether her British accent would stand out or not to her classmate. "My boots were thirsty."

Without warning, the clouds suddenly opened up and started pouring down rain. Valentine pulled back from the window in surprise as the water beat against the glass pane. That came from nowhere, now they were going to need to rethink the plan. She turned back to the others with her. "I guess we'll need to scratch the picnic plans for the moment." Taking a look over the groups preparations, she considered options. "Well... I guess we could set up in Cascade hall and break out some board games instead. Any thoughts?"

A lack of thoughts had never been one of Bort's problems. His trains of thought often collided before ever making it to their station, but they were usually heading all in similar directions at least.

He'd liked the idea of a picnic, and liked the idea of meeting other people even more. Board games brought out a competitiveness that he wasn't fond of, even playing for such gentle stakes, and a picnic was finally a group activity that didn't involve competition. Solving the challenge of how to do it in the rain was just an added bonus, as far as he was considered.

He surveyed the group and offered a few possibilities that had occurred to him:
"Could we find someone to enchant an umbrella or two? Or a gazebo? Could we find an instant tent? Does anyone have any older siblings that could help us?"

Quincy contemplated the scene before him, wondering whether a gazebo or umbrella would indeed work. He'd seen his mom use magic like that but he never had done anything like that himself. Board games in Cascade Hall sounded far enough removed from their goal of picnic though that Quincy wasn't sure if he wanted to do that either.

"We could just eat in the rain," he suggested with a shrug.

Of all the thoughts that had occurred to Bort, sitting and eating in the rain certainly hadn't been one. He stopped his face from forming a horrified grimace, and privately wondered whether the person was okay, adding a mental note to his ever-overflowing to-do list to try dropping back and having a quiet conversation with them at some point.

"That's... a possibility" he conceded, "but I really think we can do something to keep the rain off us. How about we pop over to the dining hall and see if there are some waterproof tablecloths or something, and we can improvise a tent out of them or something. Do you think they'd let us?"

He looked around to gauge the group's reactions, and tried to see if Valentine was being upset by him hijacking the direction of the afternoon. He liked helping, but he certainly didn't want to become the leader of this little group.

Val gave Quincy a questioning look. Perhaps there was some technique of weather manipulation that she was unaware of, it was certainly possible. He could expound upon it if he wanted to. If the boy was just being a little odd, then that was fine as well. People should be free to be themselves.

Either way she though Bort's suggestions sounded more promising. "I'm not sure if they would like us taking the tablecloths," she considered. Val wasn't entirely sure who 'they' were, the staff, or perhaps the prairie elves, but either way she didn't want anyone upset unnecessary. "You might be onto something with the gazebo idea though. My parents went here and I think they said there was one out in the gardens. I'm not sure where though," she looked around, playfully nervous, "Would we want to risk it? I've heard that the wrath of the gazebo gods can be disastrous."

Quincy shrugged, not particularly caring one way or the other. Food was going to be eaten, friends were going to be hung out with, and that was good enough for him. Plus if they did manage to get some sort of covering, then maybe he could collect samples of rainwater to check out later without having to worry about contaminating them with his own sopping clothes. How did the weather charm impact the rain water here?

"We can ask," Quincy agreed amicably. His stomach growled to emphasize the speed with which they should ask, but he wasn't going to say a thing about that himself. "They would probably have some ideas if nothing else."
