Bella missed the firm but kind voice of her grandmother, a sound that was normally a fixed part of Bella's dancing lessons. Without it, Bella was never entirely sure whether her steps were perfect or not and despite the pretty ballerinas offering their own critiques from the equally pretty frames of their portraits, they were not her grandmother and Bella wasn't entirely convinced of their advice and criticisms anyway. She only trusted her grandmother to know where she was going wrong, how to correct her and how to make her better than before. Her grandmother was a champion and it was through her instruction and her instruction alone that Bella would become a champion herself.
Despite her reservations about the paintings, Bella like the dance room in MARS. It was spacious and airy and bright, with plenty of space to move. The acoustics were fabulous too and it was easy to lose oneself in the music that played. Bella was in her third year at Sonora and had decided that the room was her favourite place to be. She could be herself in that room. She could let go and for a while, as she danced from foot to foot, in time with the music, she could forget about lessons and homework and other people. Bella loved dancing and she was sure, if dancing was a person, it would love her right back too.
She was in the middle of working on her footwork for the jive, trying to get the sharpness and speed of her kicks and flicks just right when the door to the room opened.
Freddie was basically jazzed about everything right now. That was normal. What wasn't normal was that he was going to get to go to a Ball soon. He'd get another one - these things happened every few years - but he'd be almost an adult by then and who knew what life had in store for him then? On the whole, he wasn't a bad dancer. He and Hana were well acquainted with their town's folk dances. However, those were nothing like what he saw his classmates attempting when he caught them practicing alone, and they didn't fit the music that he heard about for this thing. He was pretty sure it wasn't all going to be pirouettes and lifts, but he was also pretty sure it wasn't going to be German folk dancing. Probably.
Also, Ellie was real pretty and she deserved to go with someone that at least wouldn't embarrass her. Whether they actually like liked each other or not - and how was one supposed to figure that out anyway? He thought she was pretty, but was that the only criteria? - they were going to be in each other's company. So Freddie wanted to learn how to dance decently well at as many dances as he could so that if Ellie did want to dance, he wouldn't step on her toes or make her feel bad. Freddie would have fun either way, but girls seemed to want to look pretty to have fun. Except Anya. But Anya was special.
When he got to the MARS rooms, the dancing one was already set up. That was convenient for him since he had no idea what he was supposed to make it look like, and he figured that dance halls were pretty big, right? So he could practice at one end - maybe while inconspicuously watching the other person's moves - and they could go right on with whatever they were doing.
"Hallo," he said, grinning. "I dance, you dance, we good?" He pointed from himself to one side of the room, then to her and the part of the room she was already using, and then offered a thumbs up. It seemed like a good gesture for this. "Ich bin Freddie," he added, guessing she didn't probably remember him.

Bella stopped practicing when a boy walked into the room, turning her eyes to look at him. She wasn't a particularly unfriendly person but she didn't like her practice to be disturbed either. Something in the back of her mind vaguely reminded her that they had once shared classes together before she'd moved up another year to the Intermediates but she couldn't quite recall his name, perhaps because they'd never really spoken. He seemed nice, though. Nice was a good thing. However, being nice didn't explain what he was doing in this particular room of MARS.
She blinked at him when it became apparent that he too had come here to practice dancing, essentially suggesting that they each take half of the room to practice in. She had some issues with that, given that her practices were usually spent alone (once upon a time, they had been spent with her cousin but that was no longer) and she didn't particularly like to share space. Still, she reminded herself that this wasn't her personal dance room, it was Sonora's and Bella had to force herself to face the reminder that sometimes, she would have to share - but also thought to herself that if he did nothing but mess around, she'd find a way to kick him out, school's dance studio or not.
"I'm Bella," she introduced herself, giving him what she hoped was a nice enough smile. She was serious, yes and a little annoyed that her practice had been interrupted but the boy seemed nice and was smiling too so it seemed rude to not offer something back. "Have a good practice."
