Deep in thought. by Vladimir Brockert

“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” That was a quote Vlad remembered reading somewhere, a motto of one of America’s early Muggle founders. It was a creed which Vladimir lived by, although his teenage years had pushed back his wake up time a bit, and he hardly considered himself wise. He was still an early-riser, though. Even the weekends saw his eyes opening by about eight o’clock. He just couldn’t sleep in.

But sometimes it was too early to actually get up and do things, and he definitely didn’t want to disturb Dorian in the other bed, so Vlad would just lay there in the darkened room and think. Lately, he found himself staring. When his eyes adjusted to the low light, he would look at the pictures pinned to the walls. And there was one now he could not help but gawk at, one of a new addition to Dorian’s personal life.

It was Jean-Loup.

He didn’t know why he couldn’t stop looking at the boy. His picture just seemed so…. Well, Vlad didn’t know that either. He was so happy for Dorian, but every day, something got a little wronger. Every day he saw this boy from Canada and had to think about him kissing Dorian - Vlad’s best friend and roommate Dorian - and it wasn’t right. Maybe Vlad was just a bad person and didn’t like it because they were both boys, but that really didn’t feel like it either. He really hadn’t been disgusted or anything like that when Dorian told him he was dating a boy, just confused because Vladimir didn’t even know you could do that. So why was this bothering him now?

Suppressing a groan of frustration with himself, the sixth year gingerly got up and grabbed the nearest clean clothes, scooting into the bathroom to change. He placed his pajamas on the end of his bed and slipped out of the room as quietly as he could. Vlad didn’t want to wake up Dorian, but he just couldn’t stay still any longer.

He headed down to the Cascade Hall for an early Sunday breakfast, but when he got there, Vlad didn’t eat. He just sat at a table, looking more contemplative than he ever had. He just didn’t know.

Ivy still couldn't believe she had gotten Head Girl. She actually had developed a habit of touching her badge to make sure it was real and still there when nobody was watching. If she had done it when others were around people might have misinterpreted it as her being egotistical when it was just that...she felt like she'd been validated, even if it was by her peers and not by the staff. Ivy still worried that had the staff made the choice, they would have picked Eden. They had picked her over Ivy before.

Still, they had chosen her to be on the ballot while Cleo and Loren were not. And it was nice to think that her classmates liked her. The Teppenpaw had never been especially close to anyone but Vlad and Peyton and she would have thought, with Eden being so good at Quidditch and Ivy personally being one of those nerdy studious types that it would have been, if anything, the reverse, where Ivy appealed to the staff members and her roommate appealed to the students.

She had to, of course, give her brother a lot of the credit for her victory. Vlad was the one who'd put out the big flashy display with free "Ivy" gear. It had been both strange and sweet to see people wearing it. It was, without a doubt, the most heartwarming thing she'd ever seen. Just as at the Opening Feast this year, when Ivy had been announced as Head Girl, and had struggled not to cry tears of joy, she had struggled not to cry because she was so touched.

It was just too bad that Ivy wouldn't be able to return the favor for him this year. Or maybe she could. She couldn't vote for him for Head Boy, but she would still be here so thus, could still campaign. Of course, Ivy would also do the same for Peyton. Actually, she wondered if her brother would put out another big display for their cousin. She knew he was good friends with Tatiana too, but the seventh year was sure the Crotalus would be hurt if Vlad didn't at least vote for her.

Speaking of her brother, Ivy spotted him sitting in the Cascade Hall. She walked over to him and sat down. "Good morning" She noted that he seemed a bit...downtrodden and wasn't eating. "Are you all right?" The seventh year hoped he wasn't getting sick. "Do you need to go to the Hospital Wing?" Her voice was full of concern.
