Potions Assistantship [Intermediates and Advanced students] by Mary Brooding-Hawthorne

The potions assistantship was one of Mary's favorite things. She was beyond grateful to the staff members who had allowed her to begin the position, and thus far she was happy with the results. Some students had remained in their position for several years, while others had done it only once and then moved on. Either one was fine, although Mary always gave priority to returning students.

The previous year, Mary had changed up her announcement, trying to make it more clear for students and also for herself. It was easy for Mary to just make everything exactly perfect for everybody - or at least to try - but that wasn't fair to herself and it wasn't respectful of her time. She wanted her announcement to be the beginning of a contract between her and her students, setting the expectations and goals up early. It also meant students knew they had control over their own assistantship. After all, Mary was the one hired to be a professor, and she never wanted to rely so heavily on students that it became a burden for them, or impossible for her to do her job on her own.

But mostly it was just really fun.

During the first week of the new term, Mary tacked up an announcement, first in English and then in the various other languages used by students at Sonora:

Potions assistantship:

Intermediate students can help with preparing ingredients, collecting ingredients, organizing cupboards and papers, and may brew some potions with me for class demonstrations.

I may take on up to three Intermediate students, one for each year.

Advanced students can expect to work with me to prepare ingredients and potions for upcoming classes and those interested in teaching Potions can help with grading papers and preparing lectures as well. Students can also focus on healing arts, as well as other areas of specialisation, by arrangement.

I may take on up to two Advanced students, one for each year.

All students may continue in their positions as long as they'd like and as long as their work and behavior are satisfactory. (Previous potions assistants get first choice).

Come see me after class or in my office hours for more information!
