For this holiday, Nina had been given a present that she had never expected to get, a new broom . Indeed her mother had been initally upset when Kaylie had given it to Nina, but her older sister had been quick to point out to both Nina and their mother that it was supposed to be a racing broom. That also had a lot of safety charms built in. Her mom had been appeased, as Nina was not banned from flying, just Quidditch. She could still fly, could try racing, which was a bludger free endeavor.
It seemed like a reasonable compromise to them both and Nina was a Pecari after all. She was supposed to be able to adapt. Kaylie had had to adapt to much more than she had and if Kaylie could adapt to massive amounts of back pain, Nina could adapt to not being able to Quidditch.
Besides, as things stood now, the second year had more issues with feeling left out among her roommates than she did with the actual not playing the game. It was a bit better though, as she felt Starbuck at least liked her and that Delilah was only a reserve now. Nina had not asked why even though she was kind of dying to know. Still, she and Delilah weren't that close even though Nina liked her just fine. It seemed more though that Delilah was Mel's friend and Nina was Starbuck's. And Starbuck didn't like Mel.
This was not a situation of Nina's making. Nor was it one of Delilah's. It seemed, quite honestly, to be one of Mel's. The other girl had left Starbuck and Nina out of a lot. Starbuck reacted to it, and Nina had felt if Mel was going to leave them out, they might as well bond and become friends.
She mounted her new broom, grinning. It was custom made especially for Nina, which wasn't unusual for a member of the Brockert family. What made this broom special was that Kaylie had made it specifically for Nina. Granted, she'd had to make a broom for a class but it still meant an awful lot to the Pecari that her older sister had thought of her and tried to do something nice.
Nina sped off, the wind flying through her hair. She did a couple of laps before noticing someone else was on the pitch. She flew over to them quickly, the broom was really fast. "Hey," Nina greeted them with a huge smile plastered on her face. "Wanna see my new broom?" She hoped it wouldn't come across like bragging. Nina didn't want to be like that, just because her family had money and power and bloodlines. That would just be too much like Chelsea.

Theo had been happy to return home for midterm, he had missed his siblings, his parents, and even his crazy Abuela. They had spent the Christmas as usual in El Salvador with Papa’s family, and New Year’s in Ireland with Mama’s family. It had been a lot of traveling between the three countries and Theo could honestly say he was glad to be back in Sonora so he didn’t have to travel anymore, or see his crazy cousins. Both sides thought their school was better and Theo didn’t care in the least, Sonora was a great school.
The thing he had missed during the midterm though had been flying, sure at Abuela’s he had played Quidditch with his older cousins, and had a broom race in Ireland but here at Sonora he could fly higher then there. So after a quick dinner in the Hall he had raced to his dorm in Crotalus and grabbed his broom and jogged down to the Pitch. He had just swung his leg over his broom when someone stopped right by him.
“Hey, wanna see my new broom?” The girl Theo had quickly realized as Nina, a fellow second year. Though they had never worked together he knew she was one of the Pecari girls from his year. “Hey.” He said as he returned her smile. “Of course!” He said in answer to her question, Theo had a small obsession with brooms and had his own large collection. Some were for speed, others for comfort, and even some that were for long distance traveling. Though his current one was the one the Irish Quidditch team rode.
The person who had joined Nina on the pitch turned out to be Theo Manzana, someone in her year she didn't know a lot about. She knew he was in Crotalus, played beater, seemed intelligent and didn't like Mel. Oh and she thought he might be a pureblood but wasn't sure. Nina didn't keep up with those things.
But she'd never spoken to him. In fact, Nina hadn't spoken to a lot of the people in her class. Was she becoming Pecari-centric? It wasn't as if Nina thought her house was at all superior, it was just that most of the other people in her class in the other houses seemed really stuck up. She would love to make friends with people from other houses (especially given how often Nina felt left out among her roommates) but the ones in her year were pretty snobby.
But here was Nina's chance to speak with someone else from a different house and not be the kind of Pecari that her brother and Autumn's sister didn't like. Granted, the way Mel talked about Theo wasn't all that positive but here he was, talking to her in a friendly way. Really, Nina had never thought he seemed that stuck-up, just quiet and serious. Same with Alessa (and Nina was pretty sure she had a goofy side, being distant cousins, the two had met on occasions outside of school but not that often.)
She handed over the broom to Theo. "My sister Kaylie made it for me in her Broom Charms class. She has a bad back so she can't ride brooms anymore, so she designed one of me and gave it to me for Yule. It's supposed to be for racing and it's really fast." Nina grinned. "You can try it out if you want," she offered.
Hopefully, she and Theo would become friends out of this exchange. If Nina was going to be the odd one out among her roommates (which honestly, was a bit better now but she still felt like an outsider somewhat), she could at least make friends with one of the other three-Alessa and Tobar being the other two-not stuck-up, non-Pecaris in her year.
Theo whistled at the broom as Nina said. My sister Kaylie made it for me in her Broom Charms class. She has a bad back so she can't ride brooms anymore, so she designed one of me and gave it to me for Yule. It's supposed to be for racing and it's really fast."
Theo was surprised he didn’t think he had heard Nina speak this much, then again he didn’t hear a lot of people speak since he was locked away in the library most of the time. He often wondered how he had ended up in Crotalus instead of Aladren, but the potion knew best he guessed.
“That’s really nice of her to make it for you.” Theo said sincerely and wished he had one like it. Sure he had the top of the line broom, the best Mama and Papa could afford of course but nothing was like a homemade one. When Nina offered to allow him to try out the broom he smiled.
“Of course I want to try it out!” He cried. He blushed a bit at his outburst. “I mean sure if you don’t mind, you can try out mine, it’s a Cloud Scorcher so it goes up high really fast and is great at dives.” He said holding out his own broom her to take if she wanted to.
Nina nodded. "It was. Kaylie's always been really nice. She was a Teppenpaw when she was here." Most Teppenpaws were. People in the other three houses could go either way but Tepps were rarely ever mean-aside from Kaylie's ex-boyfriend Chris's other ex-girlfriend who used him as a plaything (which Adam thought he deserved) while rubbing Kaylie's nose in it. It was against their house description.
"Not like my other older sister, who is really mean." Nina added. "Do you have siblings?" She asked. Nina didn't think she'd heard of any other Manzanas at Sonora, but it was possible that Theo was the oldest or-like Mel-his siblings went to another school.
Nina still didn't really understand that. Usually it was a tradition that most people in a family went to the same school, especially siblings. It was one thing for cousins-even first cousins-to go to different places, but siblings?
Nor did she understand Mel's explanation, that it was 'fun'. Nina knew people had different ideas of fun-she thought Quidditch and flying were fun while Adam and Chelsea quite clearly did not-but that made no sense to her whatsoever.
Nina took Theo's broom from him. "This is a nice broom too." She replied. She'd heard all about Cloud Scorchers but never thought she'd get to try one what with her mother's ban on Quidditch and all, even though she was perfectly capable of affording one. The only reason Nina had the broom she did have was that Broom Charms was required for Kaylie's major and her sister made it without their mom's knowledge.
Theo smiled as Nina nodded and began to talk about her family, Kaylie seemed nice, it would have been nice to have an older brother or sister but he was the oldest of the large Manzana clan. The closest he came to an older sibling was his cousin Patrick O’Conner who attended school in Ireland, the same school Mama had attended as a wee child. "Do you have siblings?" Nina asked and Theo nodded slowly.
“I have six younger siblings.” He said with a smile. “Roxanne is nine and the oldest girl, then come the twins, Elliot and Emerson at seven years old, Savannah is five, little Teagan is only three, and the newest one Nolan is almost a year.” Theo said it proudly he loved all his brothers and sisters and couldn’t wait till Roxy joined him here at Sonora in his fourth year.
"This is a nice broom too." Nina said referring to his Cloud Scorcher and he nodded. “It’s one of the best Papa and Mama got it for me when I made the Quidditch Team, my mom has big dreams of me becoming a huge Quidditch Star.” He said with a laugh as he brushed his brown hair out of his face. “You don’t play Quidditch.” He said causally. “Is that by choice or by parental demand?” He asked with a smile, he knew Mama and Papa were going to try and stop Roxy when she came to Sonora.
He handed the Cloud Scorcher to Nina and took her own broom into his hands. He swung his leg over the broom and grinned. “So are you ready?” He asked with a grin ready to take off at her word.
"Wow," Nina replied. "I have a big family too. I'm the fourth of six." It seemed like a lot of people in her class had a lot of siblings. People had always seemed surprised by the size of her family but there were two people in her year with larger ones.
She went on. "Kaylie is twenty-one, Adam is nineteen. Both of them are in college. Chelsea-she's a sixth year Aladren-is seventeen,I'm thirteen, my sister Hope is nine-I think she'll be in your sister's class actually-and Evan just turned eight over midterm. He'll be here when I'm a sixth year, so he might be in the same class as the twins." Nina grinned. She loved her family-aside from Chelsea of course.
"You might have heard of some other Brockerts here but they aren't my sisters." The Pecari felt this needed further explanation, even though she'd have rather had Pippa, at least, as a sister than Chelsea. (Of course, she'd have rather had almost anyone on the planet as a sister than the Aladren. Nina would have even rather had Quentin as a brother than Chelsea as sister.)"Distant cousins actually. Our great-grandfathers are brothers, I think." Nina didn't really have all that geneology stuff down. It was for Adam to learn, not her.
"What are Roxanne and the twins like?" Nina asked. "And the rest too." She was curious about the three older ones in particular though because they would be in class with her siblings.
Nina sighed. "Parental demand. It's not a WAIL thing, though, it's a safety one. Kaylie used to play-which my mom was never thrilled about-and then she got hit in the back with a bludger. That's why she has a bad back now."
She returned Theo's grin and mounted his broom. "Ready...GO!" Nina took off into the air.
Theo smiled when Nina said she had a big family also. “I love my big family, my parents are crazy about kids, and they say we keep them young.” The eldest Manzana said and smiled at Nina. She was nice and calm which he liked, unlike her roommate Mel. The girl was insane and Theo had kept her distance from other Pecaris because of her. When she began talking about her family Theo listened intently. Other big families were fascinating to the second year Pecari, plus finding out more about Nina would be a good thing, he needed more friends.
When she went on to talk about her cousins at Sonora he nodded, glad that none of the Manzanas or O’Conners came to Sonora, he didn’t want to live in their shadows. “It sounds like the Brockets are a pretty large clan. Thankfully all my cousins go to school in different countries, I enjoy being here without them around, distracting me.”
"What are Roxanne and the twins like? And the rest too." Nina asked and Theo smile. “Well she hates being called Roxanne, it’s always Roxy. She’s a tomboy; she hates dresses and acts more like a boy then a girl. She’s really into music though, Mama’s taught her how to play violin.” He paused thinking if there was anything he was missing, but the few words were Roxy in nutshell.
“Elliot and Emerson are different as day and night. Elliot likes reading, and writing. He’s organized and hates being noisy. While Emerson hates being indoors and is sporty, he’s messy and loves noise. Though they always find something to do together that fits their personalities, it’s a bit creepy.” Theo admitted with a smirk.
“Savannah was born to be a Princess. Even at five you can tell she’s going to be stunning and she’s already spoiled. Teagan is your average three year old he loves playing with blocks, and Nolan is the happiest baby I ever saw. He’s always smiling and giggling.” Theo was glad the youngest Manzana children were easily summarized.
When Nina explained why she didn’t play Quidditch he nodded slowly. “I can understand why your mom wouldn’t want you to play, but that’s defiantly one of the risks of playing.” He nodded seriously. Once she got on the broom and shouted GO Theo took off after her. He wasn’t sure if the homemade would keep up with his Cloud Scorcher but so far it was keeping up.
