Professor Skies

“Welcome back,” Professor Skies greeted the advanced class as they made their way into their first lesson after the Christmas break. It was often a time of low mood but Selina hoped that she had an interesting enough subject to combat the post holiday blues.

“Today, we are going to be beginning our unit on vanishment in healing. As I am sure you’re expecting the majority of this unit will be theoretical, but today we are going to kick off with a practical,” she promised them, hoping the lure of that would be enough to maintain their interest through the next stern lecture bit that she was obliged to give.

“I know that you have been hearing this sort of warning for five or six years minimum now, but given the seriousness of the subject at hand, I am obliged to remind you of it again… Do not mess about with these spells outside of class. Even if you’re acing the practical parts of this unit, this is a highly controlled and simplified version of medical magic, designed to give you a taster, give you a chance to practise some targeted skills, and to see a practical application for your work. Please leave any real life healing up to Ms. Kapoor,” she informed them. Admittedly, there were probably a few maladies they could take care of themselves - simple cuts and bruises, even mending a simple break in a small bone was not unheard of for the school aged magical population, but she didn’t exactly think it was to be encouraged.

“Today, I have procured several fingerbones from deceased grindylows for you. Can anyone suggest why that might be?” she asked. Grindylows were covered, at a basic level, in intermediate Defence, so they should all have had some knowledge of the creatures, though possibly not enough from that most basic of introductions to suggest why their Transfiguration professor was suddenly so interested in their fingerbones. She had meant to check with Rory whether they came up in his class as well - although they were generally considered dark creatures, certain of those made useful guards, and wizards had been known cultivate them for that purpose. Anyone who had actively tried to care for Grindylows would be more likely to know what she was getting at.

She took responses, tailoring her questions to the knowledge being displayed, until she had prompted a sufficient amount of information out of them - namely, that Grindylows had very brittle fingers, this could lead to several breakages throughout their lifetime, and as these were left to heal naturally, they did not always do so neatly. Older Grindylows frequently displayed a lack of dexterity, which could lead to complications in them surviving in their natural environment.

“So, on the board is a diagram of a healthy set of Grindylow fingerbones,” she waved her wand, replicating the image that was in the textbook on her desk onto the board. “You can also consult the textbooks at the back, as creature diagrams are not my strongest point,” even with the image to focus on in front of her, she just wasn’t that tuned into the details. It was a passable sketch but the one in the book was far clearer.

“You will be given an unhealthy fingerbone with excessive bony growths. Your job is to target your vanishing spells accordingly, so that you remove only the excess bone growth and don’t take a chunk out of what should be there. Aim to go under rather than over - to peel it away bit by bit. If you overshoot, you will need to collect a new bone and start again, as it’s a lot harder to put bones back by magic than it is to take them away.

“You may begin.”

Tasha DuBois, Aladren

December 12, 2018 5:56 AM
Tasha had had a wonderful holiday break where she had gone to Israel. She had enjoyed it very much. It was very interesting to learn about the Jewish culture and Hanukah-even though they'd gotten there after it was over.

Now she was back at Sonora for her last semester. As much as she liked her classes and all, the Aladren was kind of glad to be graduating. Now she would be able to travel like she hadn't done since coming to school. Even though she had gotten sort of used to it, she sometimes felt...caged. Tasha had spent a good deal of her childhood travelling the world but for the last seven years, she'd been stuck in one place most of the year and to be honest, she didn't really like being so. She preferred a change of scenery, exploring new cultures and trying new foods.

Of course, Tasha knew that eventually she would have to marry someone and settle down and have her own kids, but hopefully she would be able to teach them to love travelling the way her mother had taught her to. If there was anything about herself-and her mother-that she wanted to pass on, it was that. Hopefully her husband would be up for it too. Tasha really didn't want to be "caged" again.

However, it looked Transfiguration was going to be fairly interesting today. True, there wasn't likely to be much use in it for her, but that didn't mean it didn't pique her curiosity. It was a good thing that advanced classes dealt with more complex and intriguing magic because otherwise, she'd probably be fed up with being here.

Maybe it would have been easier to be stuck in one place if Tasha had had more friends here. She had Joe and was mostly okay but in all honesty, it did hurt a little that she'd been more or less excluded from the beginning for the most part.

Anyway, there were more interesting matters at hand, as she was never going to see anyone she went to school with again except probably Angelique and possibly Daniel Fintoc. A much more important matter was how did Professor Skies get grindylow bones in the first place? Was there an actual market for this thing and if so was it just for lessons like this one? Like, maybe they were sold by the same people who sold potion supplies? That would make the most sense.

Tasha received her finger bone and set to work. Her bone was full of growths. She took her wand and aimed underneath saying the incantation. The growth shrunk a little.

The Aladren turned to the person next to her and asked. "So where do you think she got these anyway?"

Arianna Tate, Crotalus

Arianna was never really very happy to come back to school after a break. She was at the age now where she was going to balls and parties during the school vacations and she much preferred the company of society people to that of her rather questionable classmates. Even the ones in her year from good families weren't really.....her type of person. Juniper was so painfully shy that if she wasn't a Brockert, Arianna wouldn't have noted her existence in any way and Lily Spencer was just...basically everything the Crotalus hated. Angelique was probably the best out of everyone and she was kind of pathetic. The older girl had a desperation that one could practically smell, Arianna being the sort of girl who could pretty much sense weakness and fear. It wasn't a magical power, but it was still a skill.

Still, the seventh year was pretty much the only person near Arianna's age that she had anything in common with and besides, she was very popular in society.

And next year, Arianna wouldn't even have her to talk to. She'd only have Jasmine. And she guessed she could talk to Emerald. The Aladren wasn't a girly girl but she was an important member of society and at school, she had being the Headmaster's granddaughter going for her. Plus, she loathed Lily Spencer so there was that.

Anyway, now Arianna was stuck being back at school. Back to limited options for people worth talking to and dull boring classes. Okay, sometimes she liked classes, not that she would ever ever admit that because liking classes was for nerds, but a lot of the time, professors got bogged down with boring theory and Professsor Wright was especially bad since he went on long tangents about physics, which was pretty much right up there with Quidditch as the most boring subject ever.

At least Professor Skies was starting them off with a practical lesson rather than a theoretical one even if it wasn't anything that Arianna was going to be using. Plus, she was rather good at transfiguration which made the class overall more palatable.

She recieved her grindylow bone and got to work.
