Professor Skies

The end of term was rapidly approaching. For the seventh years, that meant RATS, and they were probably wishing that class could just give them the answers - let them know what would be in store. Unfortunately, Selina didn’t know exactly. She could make educated guesses, based on topics that were perennially popular, or spells that hadn’t been tested for a while, and any of these hints or assumptions she had readily passed on. She couldn’t say for definite though what they would need - or, at this stage, be sure of what each student needed; some would be confident with their theory, others with wandwork, maybe a specific spell always tripped one person up whilst others practised it with ease.

“Good afternoon. Over the next few weeks, we’re going to be having revision classes. Some will be introduced by me, focussing on a particular topic - especially ones that feature frequently, are commonly misunderstood by students or both. Other classes, like today’s, will give you freedom to focus on the areas you think you need to. There is a theory table and a practica table,” the normal layout of the room - rows of benches facing forward - had been reconfigured in favour of two large work spaces. One was piled high with books, the other with a box of assorted objects. There was also a stack of specimen boxes at the front of the room for any students wishing to take live creatures to work with. “You may work at whichever you wish, or divide your time between them. It’s up to you.

“If you get stuck, this is a good opportunity to ask me or one of your classmates. Explaining theories to each other is a very useful way of checking how well you know them, and how effectively you can put them into your own words.” She was sure groups of friends got together to revise but it didn’t hurt to instill some more good study habits, or to try to encourage some intermingling between groups in class, though they would probably stick to their own. Still, communal study spaces encouraged it far more, and there was nothing to be lost by encouraging.

“If you can’t think of any particular spells you want to work on, you can draw them at random from the jar on the desk.

“If you have any particular issues that your classmates prove unable to answer, ask me. You may begin.”
