Professor Lilac Crosby

Sonora had been good to her, that was for certain. Teaching here was so much more than just a job, although the paychecks didn’t hurt. It wasn’t as if she really needed the money, but it felt good to be independent. She liked being able to provide for herself and not relying on her parents’ funds.

Lilac loved the school. She had paid a few visits to another magical school, Rocky Mountain International, to see her cousin in the plays there, which was--from an unbiased viewpoint--probably equally wonderful, but Sonora stood out to her. It was hers, not exclusively, but collectively. All of its beauty shaped her life. The opportunities to shape the lives of its students brought a smile to her face every time.

Her affectionate reverie was broken by the internal timer she’d been developing, telling her that her Advanced class would soon be arriving. The brunette pulled herself from her seat, straightened her skirt, and tightened her ponytail before heading over to the counter. All of the animals, ranging in variety from a lion on the ground to a cannery on a perch, sat patiently. She opened the door, and not long thereafter, the first few “early birds” began to enter. The mainstream of students poured in shortly later.

“Good day, class,” the professor began. “As you see, there are animals--some of which would normally be thought of as dangerous--sitting without cages over yonder.” It must have been a shock to some of the students to see wild animals cage-less. Daniel Nash should not have been one of those, as she had taken the liberty of warning him, as he had requested she do with more surprising lessons the previous term.

“Do not worry; these animals are not quite as they appear. As you should recall, yesterday we discussed animagus transformations and how they worked. Behold!” The keyword behold signaled the “animals” to reveal their true forms, and humans sat and stood in their places. Where the lion, for example, had been was now a hairy, graying man--to Lilac he was known as “Dad”, but that was probably not of particular interest to the students.

After smiling to her guests, she continued, “My friends here have kindly volunteered to take part in our class today.” The six were a lion, eagle, cannery, fox, jaguar (who only came at Lilac’s demand, though the two still did not get along well after what had happened), and wolf, respectively. “They will be in their animagus form, and you will attempt to transfigure them back. Don’t be dissuaded if at first you don’t succeed; no harm will come to them in the attempt, and this spell often does require multiple casters.”

“There is no incantation, only a direct focus on the animagus. The spell will manifest as a strong blue light, and you’d do best not to look at it too intently.” Her grey eyes scanned the room for looks of confusions worn by students. “Take turns and work together. If there are no further questions, you may begin.” As if like clockwork, her guests switched themselves back into their animagus form, spreading themselves across the room to give the students a wider work area.

OOC: By now, you all know how things are run. Follow rules, long posts, tag for help, et cetera. In case their arises an inquiry about the appearance of the animagi in question (other than Mr. Lion, who’s been described), their appearance are so: a thin, balding man of his fifties, a petite blonde woman, a red-haired woman of approximately Lilac’s age, a dark-skinned man of his early thirties, and a silver-haired woman with piercing blue eyes, respectively. For the most part, try not to godmod the guests; you may mention if your spell was successful or not, and try to keep that as it. Happy posting!

Marissa was an ‘early bird,’ arriving to her classes early so she could go over her notes one last time if there was the need, perform a few simple spells to warm up and bolster her confidence if there was not, and she jumped a little when she got halfway to her usual seat before she noticed there was a lion sitting near it.

For one second, she nearly panicked, but then her good sense caught up with her, along with the memory of yesterday’s lesson. She tried to keep her eyebrows from going up, since she had no idea what the Animagi might read into it, instead smiling apologetically at the assembly, hoping to be pardoned for jumping, before sitting down and doing her best to look as though this were normal while spending rather longer than usual setting up her desk area. She had no idea whether she should talk to them or not, since it felt awkward to be near someone without speaking but they weren’t exactly in a position to talk back, so she needed to be occupied with something to excuse her greeting only being a simple “hello” and a smile.

She might not have produced much of a witch, but her mother had taught her good manners. Or had at least sent her to classes to acquire them. Whatever worked, as they said.

Hearing ‘behold’ made her twitch slightly, since that just didn’t sound right anywhere other than in an old-fashioned play or the circus, but she was pleased to have it confirmed that she was right about the animals at the front really being Animagi – though really, she’d been nearly sure of that all along, with the note that the animals weren’t as the seemed having all but confirmed it. They could have been knickknacks Transfigured into something, but then there was the note in Quidditch Through the Ages about how someone Transfigured into a could take to the air but, having bat brains, was sure to forget where they wanted to go, which would have made Mister Lion a very dangerous thing to Transfigure something into. Animagi had been the only thing that made sense. She wasn’t very good at abstract logic, but something as simple and reasonable as that was something she felt secure in her abilities with.

Her abilities with reversing the transformation of an Animagus, though, were not something she felt as sure of, and her slight, pleased smile faded when that turned out to be the assignment. It was, she supposed, better than insisting they try to become Animagi, since that was dangerous and she preferred to spent as much of her two years in this class alive as possible, but she never felt really sure about accepting anyone’s word on how safe a spell she was using on someone else was. She supposed she’d have to get used to it in Advanced classes, but….

She smiled tentatively at Mister Lion again, since he’d looked nice enough in human form, and turned to the person next to her, forcing up a smile and forcing down the desire to grab their arm and beg for help. No matter how bad things felt, she could maintain some level of dignity. Or at least, if there was a place where she couldn’t maintain some level of dignity, she wasn’t quite there yet. “Would you like to work together?” she offered politely instead.

Andrew got to class a little early, and as usual for this year he was nervous. Not because of class, no that was simple, well relatively. He was nervous because it was probably his best opportunity to interact with Marissa. He was fairly good at transfigurations and could help her if she struggled a little bit. Then he could work his way towards asking her if she'd think about maybe being his date for the dance. So far, he hadn't been able to get a seat next to her... well, except that one class, but it was early and he didn't have a plan and he'd chickened out. He couldn't do that again, and timing here was critical. He usually liked to get to class early, and he noticed that she did as well. He had to time it just so that she had entered the room and gotten a seat, then get into the room before someone else got in to sit next to her.

His plan this time was simple. He got to the hall outside of class really early. He then watched her enter the class. Was this stalking? He hoped not, that would just be creepy, this was for a good cause, right? Anyway, he waited a few moments and slipped in the door before anyone else did. Excellent! His planned worked, he could get the seat next to her. Now, he just had to walk over there... and sit down... just walk over there... why weren't his stupid legs moving!? Someone else was at the door behind him, he had to move and quickly. He spurred them into action and slid into the seat next to her. Step one accomplished!

Now, onto step two. Help her, hopefully today's class was going to be a bit tricky, not just like the discussion they had yesterday. That was about the time he noticed the lion, okay this might be an interesting class yet. The professor did her usual opening dramatics, and they were supposed to force an animagus back into human form. Andrew had read about this, it was supposed to be incredibly difficult. A group of sixth and seventh years were supposed to pull it off? Okay, he'd try. An angelic voice chimed next to him asking if he'd like to work with her. Success! Step two accomplished! "Sure," He responded way to quickly and eagerly. "I mean, yeah. This is supposed to be really hard from what I've read on the subject. Let me grab my book and we'll see if it has any more useful information."

He dug around in his bag looking for his book that he'd usually have out already at this point. Notes as well, he'd need notes. His wand is in here as well somewhere, right? Eventually he found everything, thankfully. Now, step three...

“Sure,” Andrew said really quickly, and Marissa was momentarily startled, but then decided he was probably just looking forward to the challenge that currently had her feeling almost nauseous and shaky with dread. Andrew, after all, was really good at Transfiguration. Good enough that she had been gradually getting herself used to the idea of asking him to tutor her next semester since she’d come back to school. Him happening to be in the seat next to hers today was the best thing that could have possibly happened; if it hadn’t, she thought she might have gone and searched him out, and manners be hanged for once.

Well, she would have thought about it quite seriously, anyway.

“Great,” she said, smiling at him, when he rephrased and made a good, solid suggestion for how to begin. It wasn’t great that the Transfig prodigy was confessing that this was supposed to be really hard, not great at all from where she was sitting, but it was great that he was okay with working with her, disaster that she was. She would have understood if he’d totally wanted to run in the opposite direction; it was his grade, too, which was why she had always felt bad about asking to work with people in virtually every magic class even if ruthless self-preservation drove her to it. It didn’t seem right to drag others down with her.

Whatever his other virtues, though, organization did not seem to be something Andrew was feeling up to today. She tried to avoid facial expressions for a second while he figured out where his things were before the idea struck her to start flipping in her own book. There wasn’t anything to say that might not put him on the defensive, and in addition to needing him right now, Marissa also liked Andrew, and didn’t like offending people in general.

“Do you think getting a look at them while they were human might help us with turning them back?” she asked, leafing through her notes after finding the right chapter in her textbook. “If we have a strong mental image? I don’t think I saw anyone well enough to get it just right, but I do think I got the general idea…” She thought her reasoning here was sound enough, though it was his subject, so she was prepared to accept being totally and completely off base and wrong.

Great, she was already looking through her book and notes; he was falling behind before they even got started. Then she had a spectacular bit of inspiration. He stared at her in awe for just a moment before he realized what he was doing and quickly looked at his book. She was a genius, how was she not acing this class? How was he going to impress her at this rate, he was going to have to step things up.

"That is a great idea. I'm sure it will help." He flipped through his book and located the proper section. "Transfigurations, for me, works a lot with mental images. If I can visualize what I'm trying to turn something into, it generally works a lot better." He flipped back and forth between a few pages, "There's not much else in this section to help, is there?" He grinned at her. "I guess we'll just have to figure it out on our own. How does that sound?"

He turned and addressed the lion that was sitting near them, "Maybe I should be asking you that. For the record, I apologize in advance for any unpleasantness we inflict upon you. I hope you don't take it personally, we are new at this."

"Okay," He turned back to Marissa, "Are we ready to try this?" He swished his wand around dramatically and examined the lion visually. "Okay, first we get a good image of what we are working with." He closed his eyes and began to remember what the lion had looked like as a human, the older gentleman. "Now we picture what he should be... and...." With a flourish, he whipped his wand toward the lion. There was a bright flash, and a lion still sat in front of them. "Huh... well, I guess that would have been to easy."

Crap! He failed. Inherently he knew he would, but it would have been really awesome to have succeeded. Then he could have turned cooly and suavely to her and said 'That's done, now you want to go to the dance with me?' Now what was he going to do?

For a moment, with Andrew staring at her with a strange look on his face, Marissa was sure she’d said something that made her sound like a Muggleborn firstie who hadn’t quite grasped that wands were real yet, but then he went back to his books with the comment that it had been a great idea. Looking back at her own notes, Marissa could tell she was blushing and smiling. It was wonderful, really wonderful, to get something right in here.

It was less wonderful to be forced to concur that everything they had down on paper in some format was not going to be of much help in affecting this transformation. “I don’t think there is,” she agreed, but met his suggestion that they’d just have to figure it out themselves with the smile she put on before practical exams. “I guess we will,” she said brightly.

She nodded along with his apology in advance to the lion. “Yes,” she agreed. “It’s really good of you to let us do this…” She didn’t know that she would, no matter how fond of Sonora or the professor she might happen to be, if she were in his position. It was difficult for her to believe that there was really no way this could go horribly, brain-scarringly, killing-someone wrong, at least as long as she was involved.

She focused right along with Andrew as instructed, but was startled all out of her concentration when her wand actually did have a fitful, faint blue light at its end for a moment as his emitted a much brighter flash.

“It would have been,” she agreed. “I think it was my fault, though. I lost focus as soon as my wand actually did something. Sorry about that, really sorry.” She smiled hopefully, trying to simultaneously look penitent. No way she was passing this lesson without a significantly more talented partner. “Want to try again?”

Marissa had such a pretty smile. How was he supposed to concentrate around her? Focus, he needed to focus. He could concentrate on the task at hand, lose himself in the problem until he figured it out, but the assignment was not his real problem to figure out today. It was only the first... well, technically third step to his real challenge. So, he had to solve this problem to make progress, but he couldn't immerse himself in it completely, he can't risk losing Marissa in the process.

So... they had to turn a lion back into a man. "Yeah, we'll give this another go... but..." Something. There was something different about this then their normal class. What was it? "I'm missing something. What is it?" Great now he was whining. He just had to talk through the problem, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "Okay, normal transfiguration techniques didn't work. Those techniques are used to focus and turn one thing into something else. No, that's not quite right." He opened his eyes and looked at the lion again, it was nice of him to put up with them. Wait, what was it that Marissa had said. "good of you to let us do this...".

She saved him again! "Marissa, you're a genius!" He smiled wide at her. "It's obvious now. The standard transfiguration techniques are used to change not one thing into another, but one non-sentient thing into another. The key difference in this case is our target. He consciously became a lion, and remains a lion." He paused for a moment, had the lion smiled there briefly? He thought he'd saw... anyway. "Will. That is the key. We're not trying to change some inanimate object that can't fight back. He want's to remain a lion, and we want him human. It's not just a matter of technique, it's a matter of power and overwhelming the target. That is why it can take a group of wizards to force an animagus back into human form." He grinned at her. "We quite literally have to believe in it more than him."

"So, are we ready? Focus and believe that we can do it." He pointed his wand at the lion again. "Let's dance."

“I am?” Marissa said, startled but undeniably pleased, upon hearing that she was a genius who’d provided the breakthrough they so needed right now. Even back in the Muggle world, no one had ever gone that far, so she knew he didn’t mean it literally that she was an actual genius, but by the way he was smiling, she didn’t think it was meant to mock her, so she must have done something right. Again. This was turning out to be a really awesome day, especially to be one where they were working on human Transfiguration.

Andrew explained what it was he thought they had to do, and she wasn’t sure how she’d inspired that train of thought yet, but if it worked, then that would be great. Really super awesome great. It would be good if it even worked halfway, but…She tried to force herself to think more positively, to really, truly believe it could not just work halfway, but work all the way, the way it was supposed to. Andrew believed it, she thought, so she could, too. Somehow….Somehow, she could. She had to today, so she could. Simple as that.

She raised an eyebrow slightly at his phrasing – she wouldn’t exactly call this dancing, unless it was dancing with the devil and daring him to make her fail sixth year, which was how she often thought of Transfiguration, but he was really good at this class, so she doubted he thought of it that way – but nodded. “Here we go,” she said, and focused as hard as she could, squeezing her eyes shut as she imagined him growing taller, fur retracting, looking like a person, person, he was a person, there was no lion sitting there, there was a person, he had to look like a person….

Oh boy, had that been some kind of Freudian slip? Not really, it was supposed to be a cool, daring, heroic-y type of thing before jumping headlong into a challenge, right? Them versus the lion, a battle of wills, who would outmaneuver and triumph over whom? Or was his subconscious trying to get him to stop stalling and ask the incredibly pretty and smart girl next to him if she wants to go to the dance? Or was that just him reading into it to much? Was him reading into it his way of consciously digging his subconscious out from... oh who cares. He would just ask her, simple as that. She would either then make him insanely happy or crush his soul into fine powder. Either way, it would have to be better than this ridiculous dance he'd been doing with himself. Hopefully.

But first, there was work to be done. Andrew had finally made up his mind. Now, as soon as they had turned this lion back into a person he could get on with it. Simple. He practically glared at the lion, it was the only thing between him and a date to the dance. Succeed and she'd have to agree to it, fail and... well, fail. He would not fail. Marissa was at work already beside him, Andrew could already almost see their quarry fighting for his composure. He began pouring his will into the spell as well. Something was happening. He closed his eyes to improve his focus, removing everything else. It's just him and Marissa and the lion.

He could see both the lion and the man in his mind's eye. He had honed this skill over the years he'd spent here at Sonora. He continued to force the necessary changes, but ran into a problem. He had been right, the changes he had been applying were reverting as fast as he could make them. The lion was fighting back and retaining his form. Andrew tried to work faster, darting around changing unrelated parts, hoping that some would slip the lion's attention. But none were, he was everywhere he was in control. He would not give up, he changed tactics and focused on one area, just removing some of his fur. That is when he found a surprise. He could feel Marissa's energies working as well at the same task.

Now that he had felt them, he wasn't sure how he had missed them before. Marissa was willing force into the change on the grand scale, and he had been trying to hit specifics, no wonder the lion had been able to resist them. Now they could work together, now he was in trouble. Andrew shifted his focus to compliment and add to Marissa's. Together he could feel the lion's control slipping, they were overwhelming him, they were doing it!

Marissa

August 16, 2011 9:52 AM

From the first minute Marissa had known about magic, even under the initial shock, she had never really believed it could be true for her even if it was for other people. By the end of the first month at Sonora, any confidence she had managed to develop when the first weeks weren't very easy on anyone had been ground exceedingly fine by watching not just one or two but virtually all of her classmates outpacing her. Five years of that idea being reinforced had not helped matters much.

Somehow, though, she could never quite give up. She'd tried, a few times, but once she was finished crying a little more than she usually did after a bad failure, she found herself going back to the task again. And again. And again. It had occurred to her that this was at least mildly masochistic - like prodding a loose tooth all the time because it hurt in a way that was almost pleasant. There was a kind of grim pleasure she took in being stubborn and failing again and again only to usually end up with no more than a partial success.

All of that stubbornness was going into the task in front of her now. She could tell she'd already passed through the accepting-of-failure stage and into the stubborn one. It had happened awfully fast, and she wasn't sure why, but maybe it had something to do with Andrew's encouragement, and with working with someone instead of just working on their separate Transfigurations while talking. She didn't know, but whatever it was, she liked it.

She still had her eyes closed when she suddenly felt her concentration, held to the full for a good bit now, give. It was almost like a physical shock, which she imagined was what the poor gentleman they were practicing on had felt. Pretty sure, after all that effort, that he was at least a frightening-looking half-man, half-lion construct out of nightmare, she kept her eyes closed as she asked Andrew, "What happened?"

Her voice, she was pleased to hear, was almost steady. Oddly, the almost was a product of a note of something more like eager excitement than anxiety or despair. She tried to suppress that feeling. Just because thongs felt like they were going well was no reason to lose her head.

"What happened?"

Andrew heard her ask the question, he therefore assumed that she had her eyes closed as well. It looked like he was going to have to open his and find out. He slowly cracked them open, and peered out into the room not quite sure what to expect. He knew something had happened, they had been winning the battle of wills, but had it been enough? His eyes snapped open when he saw the man before them. They had done it? He couldn't believe it, they had actually done it!?

"We... we did it?" he muttered with disbelief. "We did it!" He cheered after collecting himself again. "Marissa, we actually did it!" Then he started to break down into babbling, "How did we do that? We shouldn't have been able to. There is no way we're powerful enough to do that. But we did, we did it!"

Step three, accomplished, they had somehow pulled off a miracle. Now for step four, actually asking her. He had made up his mind, he was going to do it and this was the best time to do it. Granted it had been a whole lot easier to decide when there still had been an impossible task in the way. But now they had done it, and he was going to have to continue forward. One impossible task done today, now for the second, convince a beautiful girl to go to the dance with him.

Deep breath, ride the success, dive right in. "H...", his voice cut out and his hands were shaking. Was it an aftereffect of the spell? No... he was just nervous. Come on coward, do it! He yelled at himself in his head. Carpe Diem, or whatever that phrase was. He closed his eyes, took another breath and forced his way forward. "HeyMarissacanIaskyousomething?" Slow down! He took another breath, opened his eyes and found himself staring at the desk in front of them. Okay, fine, desks are good and stable. Calm down. "Do you want to go to the dance with me?" There, he'd asked, how would she respond? He was tempted to bolt out of class before she could answer, but he wasn't sure his legs would move anyway. Instead he forced his head to angle upwards to look at the girl.

August 17, 2011 5:28 PM
Oh, dear, Marissa thought as Andrew muttered something. She had been worrying about losing her mind, in an absent sort of way, for as long as she could remember, but she had never predicted that she’d be unsure, when she heard something, if she was losing her wits or her hearing. Now, though, she was, because it sounded like he had just mumbled that it worked.

He was repeating it. Louder. She guessed that ruled out her hearing. Tentatively, she opened her eyes.

The lion was a man. Everything else around her, however, seemed as she would expect – none of the disordered chaos she thought would be the result of losing it. Plus, she still felt like herself, not even reacting to the impossible yet. So….

“Omigosh, it worked! It worked! Oh my – “

It took her a moment to realize the extremely high-pitched female voice was hers. She also realized she had grabbed Andrew’s arm and quickly withdrew as he began to babble in much the same way her mind was babbling at her. “I don’t know!” she managed to exclaim to the question of how they’d pulled it off. “I guess you’re just totally, rock star awesome at this!”

Oh, dear, went a corner of her mind again. She did not talk like that. She knew people did, but she didn’t. She really was losing her head. Marissa fought for some outward semblance of composure. She thought it would be hours before she stopped smiling, this was even better than the moment she had found out she passed that first stupid credit exam her mother had her take, but she could at least stop frightening the professor, her peers, and their guests.

She got herself under control enough to nod, though still grinning, when Andrew asked if he could ask her something at an extremely rapid rate. “Sure,” she said, only sounding a little giddy, even though any question was sure to be something that made her admit just how little she, personally, really had to be happy about when he had done most of the wor –

"Do you want to go to the dance with me?"

That one actually caught her short. She had not anticipated that one. It occurred to her, sometimes, in the abstract that Sonora’s female population largely outnumbered its male one in most years, but she had never really connected that idea with the one that she might actually be considered as a date candidate for anyone besides Quentin, who was, of all the ridiculous things, engaged now. As she did, she turned bright red.

Immediately, she felt stupid for that. They were both prefects. They had to dance. It wasn’t a matter of Andrew being interested, it was just a matter of practicality. She could understand that. Still, the high of the success was enough that she was still smiling, and in a less inhibited mood than usual.

“I’d be glad to,” she said, giggling. “So long as you keep helping me. Oh, wow.” She pulled herself together. "Is this for real? Or am I going crazy?"

She... she... she said yes? She would be glad to go to the dance with him? He had heard that, right? He wasn't just delusional from her touch, was he? Not only did she say yes, but she wants him to help her with stuff, she wants to spend more time with him? This was awesome! He could help her with other transfigurations stuff, maybe charms as well. Hmm... he wondered if she could give him a little help with potions while they were at it.

At this point he realized he was grinning like a fool. He tried to put on a cooler, suave expression and failed miserably. She was grinning as well though so he didn't feel to terribly silly. They had just done something amazingly awesome, they also had turned a lion back into a man. "I wouldn't worry to much," he replied to her, "If you are going crazy, you're not going alone. I'm with you all the way." That... didn't sound nearly as good as it had in his head. Oh well.

"Also, it'll be my pleasure to help you with anything I can. You have but to ask, I am at your disposal." He smiled to himself that came out cooler and suaver. Was suaver a word? It didn't matter right now, somehow he had gotten a beautiful girl to agree to go to the dance with him, now he had to figure out what to do now. He had to make sure that she didn't come to her senses and find someone better to take her to the dance. Oh crap. The dance.

His grin faltered just a bit, "Umm... this may be a bad follow up question. But, do you know how to dance?"
