After class, Heinrich dawdled in packing up his books and potions supplies. He took extra long writing out his label for the Skele-Gro potion vial he was turning in. Eventually, he was the only one left as the rest of the Intermediates decamped on their way to wherever they went after a long day of classes.
He finished up the last of his own packing and packaging and brought his vial up to the front of the room where the rest of his classmates had already deposited theirs. Once his had joined them, he turned to Professor Brooding.
He squared his thin shoulders and took a deep breath. Here goes. “I would like to be the potion assistant for third years,” he declared, his German accent thick, but his words understandable. He had been working very hard on improving his English fluency and pronunciation with his uncle over the summer (of course, Uncle also had an accent, but it was much smaller than Heinrich’s). They had hardly spoken German to each other at all, except when Uncle Karl said something Heinrich didn’t understand and he had to explain.
“Is that okay?” he asked, suddenly uncertain, “My English is not too bad for helping?” Until the secret broke, his English was really the only reason he could imagine he might be turned down for the position. But a helper was no help at all if he didn’t understand what was being asked of him, so the language barrier really was a potential problem. “I work every day making it more good,” he promised. He knew he especially had trouble when a sentence had more than one verb like that one did, but he thought he was probably getting the grammar and conjugations close enough that she could hopefully follow what he was trying to say.
Or maybe he was just proving the point that his Intermediate level of English just wasn’t going to work in a potions assistant.
1Heinrich HexenmeisterMay I be your Potions Assistant?1414Heinrich Hexenmeister15
Professor Brooding was not often surprised by her students, simply because she made a point not to set any particular expectations for them. She wanted them to succeed, of course, she wouldn't have set up any sort of assistantship if she didn't, but she also didn't mind when their success weren't in the academic realm. All of these were pushed aside though for the sake of some interest, so when class ended and Heinrich Hexenmeister approached, Professor Brooding was interested, not surprised, and proud of his success.
"Your English has improved a lot," she said, remembering the start of the previous year and offering him a reassuring smile. "It will be no problem for this work. I'm glad that you're interested! Your potions have been adept, and I trust your abilities in this regard."
Professor Brooding cared very much about her work, and about the field of potions making. She never expected students to care as much as she did, but she did demand the sort of excellence that that care bred. She would not allow students to mutilate ingredients or waste things when they were taking responsibility for these sorts of things. Her face and her tone remained kind, but it was very clear how much this mattered to her.
"What are you hoping to get out of this position?"
(OOC - Let me know whether you'd like to have any threads for this role after this one, or whether you'd prefer it just be something that is going on unspoken! :) )
