Professor Sophie O'Malley

October 21, 2016 3:55 PM
“Let’s talk about antidotes!” Sophie began with typical enthusiasm. “First off: what are they? Can anyone tell me?” She selected the first raised hand she saw and awaited their answer. Their textbooks would tell them that an antidote was any potion or substance that would alleviate or lessen a negative effect contributed to another potion, spell, or condition, but anything in that vein would have been acceptable. “There we are, five points to you,” she smiled when a right answer was procured. Sophie was the kind of professor to give out points for these little, generally easy or spelled-out in-class questions to encourage participation.

“Now, can anyone name an example?” There were many possible examples, so she allowed three or four different raised hands to provide their inputs. “Did I hear the hiccupping solution?” the blonde asked rhetorically, knowing full well whether or not she had. “Interesting as that’s what we’ll be brewing today. Now, a hiccup is, as you can imagine, not nearly as dangerous a condition as, say, being poisoned, but I for one am still glad that we’ve found a potion for it. Those little things are so irritating! As you can imagine," she added almost as an afterthought, "this potion cures hiccups."

“You’ll find instructions on page 233 of your textbooks,” Sophie said. “No worries if you forgot your book today, though, as I’m sure a neighbor wouldn’t mind sharing with you. You know you’re always welcome to brew in pairs or small groups as long as you still get the work done.” She gave a kind smile. “Unless anybody else has questions, feel free to get brewing.”

OOC: Instructions are:

Combine two crocodile hearts with three eyes of newt
Heat until potion is green
Add two tsp of flobberworm mucus
Stir fourteen times clockwise
Let simmer seven minutes, or until the potion is a turquoise color
Add another tsp of flobberworm mucus
Stir twelve times counterclockwise
If the potion is a pale yellow, wave your wand over the cauldron twice and leave it to brew for an additional ten minutes

Please note that the hiccupping solution is only mentioned briefly in the books and there were no actual canon instructions, so these are what I have decided they are for our current purposes. Its mention in the books was brief, as something that Draco had learned previously to a mentioned brewing in his sixth year. To that end, I imagine the wand-waving part to be key, and therefore success may vary with magical level and year, so the final result for third years may be a bit off in coloration and effectiveness.

Additionally, all IC extra points do translate to OOC bonuses, so if you want the points for your House, make sure to answer Sophie’s questions! A list of things considered antidotes can be found here. Have fun!

Sutton absolutely hated Potions. It wasn’t that she disliked the professor, because she didn’t. She actually thought that the professor was pretty nice. However, it still couldn’t curb her dislike for the class. She didn’t care about what antidotes did or what ones there were. Yeah, she knew that they were important. Obviously, she wouldn’t want to have some sort of issue that had no solution, but there were people that actually did enjoy this sort of thing that could figure all that out. That’s why there were people in those fields. She already knew that she wasn’t going to be one of them. She couldn’t wait until next year when she could drop this class.

As such, the Pecari wasn’t paying much attention. Most of what the professor was saying went in one ear and out the other. Her notebook was open and it looked like she was taking notes. Instead, she had a scribble of words and the rest in doodles. Her brown hair fell in front of her face and she brushed it aside in annoyance. Looking up she caught the part about instructions on page 233. Flipping to that page, she glanced down at the ingredient list was. Ew. Crocodile hearts and eyes of newt. Making potions was honestly pretty gross sometimes.

She wondered if there was anyone that would be willing to work with her. She knew that she could always work with her sister, but she also knew that would involve some bickering. Aislinn expected her to do actual work and learn something. But when she actually tried to do something, she got told that she wasn’t doing it right. It was a no-win situation. She decided that was out.

Craning her neck, she looked for someone that didn’t have a partner yet. Grabbing her stuff, she slid into the seat next to them. “Hey. Mind working with me on this?”

Jax Donovan (Aladren)

October 25, 2016 8:52 PM
This year was starting off a bit strange. His interaction with Joella when they had first returned had him thinking that there was maybe flirtation happening between the two of them and that Joella might still be interested in him which meant, there was a possibility that something could happen between them. But he hadn’t really seen much of her since then, so now he wasn’t so sure that he had read the conversation correctly. He knew that part of it was the fact that she was now in Advanced Classes and she was busy with Quidditch, so those were likely the reason why he wasn’t seeing much of her, but even so, his confidence on the subject was weening.

Jax sat towards the back of the Potions classroom alone at one of the tables. He preferred to work alone as often as possible because he could never trust anyone and most people just annoyed him anyway. His friends and sister were alright to work with sometimes; it really just depended on the actual subject and lesson, but of them, Wu was usually the one whom he felt comfortable working with due to her quiet nature. Well, used to anyway. She made it clear that she did not think of them as friends. And since Potions required quite a bit of skill and concentration, Jax didn’t like to work with others because they were a distraction for him and he really didn’t need to cause any sort of explosion in Potions class due to an inept partner.

He sat quietly as Professor O’Malley went through her lesson. He didn’t actively participate in questions because he felt it was just a useless step in the learning portion of a class. What if someone said something incorrect? Then they had to waste time listening to the Professor correct them and then they were probably humiliated.

Thankfully, Professor O’Malley moved quickly on and they were able to start on their potions. Jax opened his book and reviewed the ingredients. He never understood why they had to use so many animal parts in potions. It always made him a little sick. Of course, part of that feeling might be because one night a month he was also an animal of sorts so he felt a little bit of a kinship to these poor creatures.

He had just poured his potion water into the cauldron when Sutton Nicholls wandered up to his desk. He knew which twin it was because of the haircut. Aislinn was in the same house as him and he saw her from time to time, so it was rather easy to pick them out when they were physically different like now. He couldn’t understand how two identical twins could be so vastly different. Gia and him weren’t even twins (though some might still believe that they were) and they were more alike than these sisters. At least, from what he had observed of them over the years. He didn’t know them personally to say for certain.

Jax wanted to say that he did mind, but his mother taught him better than that. “Not at all.” He said in his low voice. “Are you any good at potions?” He asked in order to assess the situation.

Well, there was an interesting question. Was she good at potions? Homework and tests would indicate a definite no, but actually making potions was decent enough to keep her from failing the course. Sutton wasn’t stupid. She just didn’t care enough to put in the effort required to do more than just pass. But obviously, she wasn’t going to give him a complicated answer on her academic life.

Instead, the Pecari asked, “Does it matter? You’re an Aladren and my guess is that you are. Not many Aladrens want to have less than perfection on their transcripts.” She knew that she had a valid point. There was the rare Aladren that didn’t follow this path, but that was the exception, not the rule. She would have been surprised if he was that exception. Though, it would make him a bit more interesting. She tended to like those that didn’t quite follow the rules.

“Besides, I don’t deal in animal parts,” she said, making a face. “I think it’s gross and unnecessary. I think it’s possible to have a potion that can have the same effects without all the ethical and moral ramifications that killing animals for by products brings up. I just don’t think they want to put any effort into finding vegan solutions. It’s so weird, I think, cause in the muggle world there are like vegan alternatives for almost everything.”

Sutton paused realizing that she had gone off on a minor raging tangent. “Sorry. Anyhow, I’ll follow your lead with the potion. I don’t want to mess up your grade or anything, but I’d rather not have to do the parts requiring animal products, if you don’t mind.”

Jax

October 26, 2016 9:30 PM
Jax’s blue eyes narrowed at her response to his question and the corners of his mouth turned down. It obviously did matter otherwise he wouldn’t have asked the question to begin with. He needed to know if she was actually going to attempt the potion with him or if she just expected him to do all the work and get the credit for it as he had seen several other students do in the past. Jax was good at Potions as he was with all his other lessons, but he put in the effort and made sure that he earned his top marks. That didn’t mean that he wanted anyone riding on his back getting credit where they do not deserve it. “It matters to me because if you plan to sit there and do nothing, then you can find yourself another partner.” He told her flatly, but not aggressively in any way. He wasn’t going to play any games and he certainly wasn’t going to be polite to someone who seemed to judge him solely on his house alone.

She sounded like how he imagined most girls sounded whenever they were around anything that wasn’t pretty. Jax resisted the urge to roll his eyes while he listened to her talk. It was clear to him that she never picked up a book to read about potions. “There are vegan alternatives to potions.” He informed her. “Professor O’Malley prefers to keep it to the traditional way of teaching potions, but there are plants who have similar properties as their animal counterparts that can be used in potions. The effects are as strong or they may vary in their side effects, but the end results end up being the same.” Jax said, as he added the two crocodile hearts with three eyes of newt that he combined into the cauldron before adjusting the heat to a simmer.

“Typically, the animal ingredients tend to be easier to come by because there are farms that raise the animals for the sole purpose of potions and some of the plants are difficult to find depending on their magical properties and they might bloom during only certain times of the year.” Jax was talking a lot and perhaps he ought to stop, but he enjoyed potions on some level because it was precise and there was an end result that can be seen. He had done research on the Wolfsbane potion that he had to take regularly and he knew that this potion had a particular way about it when it came to the ingredients and creating the potion.

The potion was already green, so he measured out the flobberworm mucus and dropped it into the mix. He then leaned back and gave her the reigns for stirring it. “Are you a vegan?” He asked her, realizing that she seemed to have a lot of passion towards the subject.

The way Jax talked he sounded like Aislinn. Was it an Aladren thing to sound so businesslike? It was no wonder they got good grades with the way they acted if this was the norm. She couldn’t imagine being so focused that it no longer seemed like any fun. Not that she thought Potions was that much fun, but some classes were better than others. She wished sometimes that she went to a muggle school where they offered art and music. She would have loved to take those. Instead, she was stuck here.

“I have to pass this course,” she replied quietly, looking down at her hands. It was a rare moment to which she allowed someone to know anything about her. She preferred to keep people at a distance. It was easier than getting hurt. But she needed him to know that she was serious about this project.

Unfortunately, her passion took over in regards to having to deal with animal byproducts. “I understand that she wants to keep it the traditional way, but it seems wrong when there are other choices available. Plus, with Herbology, it seems like there would be more opportunity for cross-teaching with the availability of those plants.” She wasn’t sure if what she was saying was actually making any sense. She wasn’t as articulate as other people since her self-expression usually came in other forms.

“It seems cruel to raise animals just to kill them for some potion to cure something superficial like acne. I know this one is important since there have been severe cases of hiccups, but again, animals can be spared by using those vegan alternatives. If we can cultivate a farm that slaughters animals, then why can’t we have greenhouses that take advantage of when particular plants are at their peak for potion creating? Plus, do we know that the animal didn’t suffer? I wouldn’t want to be the animal that was raised just for my parts. Would you?”

“Vegetarian. I like milk and cheese,” she replied, as she took to stirring the potion. She was thankful that he had done the animal parts of it and she had meant it when she said she didn’t want to ruin his grade. Not to mention, she was trying to do well too. As stated, she proceeded to stir fourteen times clockwise.

After that, it had to simmer for seven minutes approximately, which gave them quite a bit of time to sit there in silence. Absently, she doodled various animals faces along the edge of her textbook while waiting for the potion. She wasn’t quite sure what to say to Jax since he seemed somewhat aloof.

Jax looked carefully at Sutton when she admitted that she needed to pass the course. He took that to mean that she would do her best and actually help him on the potion. He chose not to reply to that as he was sure that was probably more embarrassing for her than she cared to admit to him. Instead, he simply started on the potion. If he were to admit something vulnerable, he wouldn’t want the person to acknowledge it and embarrass him more. He felt that he was doing her a favor my ignoring it.

He listened to her as she went on about using Vegan ingredients for the potions and how she felt the Professor was doing an injustice. Despite himself, he found himself intrigued by her. He knew some people had passions about things (his was gaining strength both physically and mentally) but he had never really heard anyone particularly voice them with as much passion as she was. He was a little amused by her passion though, not in that he thought it was funny, but just because if she had researched a little, she would have found that her points were actually already things in the real world.

“I do not disagree with you.” Jax said calmly as he worked. “There are places that specialize in growing particular plants that are otherwise difficult to find for potions and there are apothecary shops that cater to Vegan needs.” Jax commented. He knew this simply because his mother went around to different shops to obtain the ingredients for his Wolfsbane as well as owl ordered for any supplies that she couldn’t find outright. She chose to get things at different shops so that the shop keepers wouldn’t be able to figure out what it was that she was brewing and give her and Jax away. So far, it had been working for them while they lived in Seattle. But because of her requirements, they had discovered quite a few Vegan inspired shops. None of them were Vegan, but it was helpful when they were looking for more plant based items for various potions (plus, they were usually cheaper than some of the animal ingredients and money was always tight for them).

In the silence after she had stirred the potion (he had silently counted as she did so), Jax prepared the next part of the potion with the animal parts. He did think it was a bit weird how someone figured out how flobberworm mucus could affect something. Who had that job? “Are you planning to be an animal rights activist when you graduate?” Jax asked her. He never really gave his sister’s roommate much thought before, but now that he was working with her, he thought she was rather interesting to talk to. And that was saying something coming from him. At least, in his opinion it was.

“Oh,” Sutton said quietly, a little stunned that there were people that were working towards vegan ideals. She felt stupid for not knowing more about the wizarding world even though she had technically been apart of it for a few years. But then, she had always felt more connected to the muggle world. All of her friends were there. Schools, hobbies, technology, all of those were there.

“I guess I really don’t know much about this world,” she admitted. “How do you know all of this stuff?” Her blue eyes tinged with curiosity. “My grandparents are wizards, but they don’t talk about this sort of thing. It’s inappropriate to discuss anything that doesn’t have to do with traditional ideals, I guess.” She shrugged a little when she said it. Though, Sutton pretended it didn’t, the whole situation made her sad. Her father’s side of the family was in the medical field. They could make a real difference in the world, yet they continued to use the old ways. She knew that they were still helping people, but she felt like they could be revolutionary in bringing wizarding medicine to a more ethical and moral practice by introducing things like vegan potions.

While Jax worked through the next part, he asked her a question that she had never thought about seriously. “I don’t think so. I mean I never really thought about what I wanted to do. I guess I thought more about what I didn’t want to do. My grandmother wants to try and find a suitable Pureblood for me, though, that will be a little hard since I’m not one myself. She thinks that if I somehow disown the muggle part of myself that I’ll somehow be worthy.” It was a ridiculous notion to say the least, but that was her grandmother and the world to which she belonged. It got confusing after a while.

“Aislinn tries,” Sutton continued. She watched her sister knocking herself out to get high grades and to be perfect. “Her life is planned out for her. She’ll make our grandparents happy by working in our grandfather’s hospital and marry someone our grandmother chooses. I think they’ve given up on me cause I don’t want that.” She looked down at her notebook, at all of her drawings. “I think I might like to do something with art. What about you?”

November 06, 2016 8:17 PM
“My mother brews potions at home and it’s much cheaper to get plants than it is to get animal parts.” Jax explained. When they were forced from their homes all those years ago, they had very little money and had learned that vegetation was much cheaper and easier to get than meat was. “She learned how to make Vegan potions and meals for us until we were on our feet. She continues to make Vegan potions most of the time too since it’s just easier that way.” Jax told Sutton. They didn’t talk about how poor they were usually, but he thought it was pretty known that he came from a single mother who worked hard to keep a roof over their head.
He listened while Sutton explained her grandparents, but he was only confused by what she was telling him. From what he could tell, she was a Halfblood, which then made her grandparents logic flawed. They had already allowed their child to step outside the bounds of the Traditional rules by allowing their son or daughter to have children with a Muggle/Muggleborn/Halfblood, making them no longer Purebloods. Why would they then believe that they would continue to follow the traditional paths when they were no longer within the bounds of the Traditional Society of Purebloods?

“Your grandparents make absolutely no sense.” Jax commented, not really thinking that Sutton may be offended by his comment. “Since you are not Pureblood, the likelihood of an actual Pureblood family accepting a marriage with you or your sister is very slim. It would have to be one with little to no status that is hoping your family’s business will help boost them. Or one that is disowned or disinherited from a more prominent family.” He said. He didn’t completely understand the way Purebloods worked, but his mother sometimes let things slip about her life before that fateful evening. A life that they would have had to endure.

“I haven’t really thought much about life after Sonora.” Jax admitted to her. This was mostly because for him, every day could possibly be his last decent one if anyone ever found out about his curse. Life for him would change drastically if that ever got out and no one would ever want to work with him. Because of that fear, he never really allowed himself the opportunity to really think of a future for himself.

November 07, 2016 7:38 PM
Sutton nodded as Jax spoke a little of his home life. She had heard that his father was deceased. She couldn’t imagine being in his position. She knew she was lucky. Even though, her parents were divorced, her father was still alive, albeit quite busy, but he did always make sure they were provided for.

Sutton scoffed a bit about her grandparents. “They really don’t. I guess they think that if we marry Purebloods, any, then eventually my father’s mistake will be overlooked.” In a way, it hurt to think of it that way, because it meant that having her and Aislinn was the mistake. “I don’t buy into any of it. I’m not going to marry someone just because of some stupid status and, honestly, if someone wanted to marry or not marry me for that reason, then they aren’t someone that I would want to be with. I deserved better than that. Everyone does.” In that, she was speaking for all of those who had to follow such ridiculous rules.

“That’s not a bad thing,” Sutton replied to not thinking about life beyond Sonora. “Aislinn gets so caught up in what she’s going to do that she doesn’t actually live. Like, I know that working hard now is going to help her get to where she wants to go, but what is she going to remember when she looks back on now? That she was always studying?” She wasn’t sure that she could actually be speaking that well on the subject given that she hadn’t exactly been living either. “It’s just who knows if there is a future? Anything could happen between now and then, so why not enjoy the ride?” She knew she probably didn’t make any sense. She always had a difficult time organizing her thoughts, but she was never lacking passion in them.

Joseph Umland, Teppenpaw

November 09, 2016 4:29 PM
Joe had been surprised by how long the full definition of antidotes was, as he had been under the impression they were just for poisons. It turned out, though, that while there were catch-all words that could be used with perfect comfort by average people (such as Joe), there existed a plethora of terms for specific things that were greatly favored by geeks (such as Joe’s only relative at Sonora). Furthermore (and typically enough), the people in charge of CATS seemed to think that American schoolchildren needed to know at least a goodly handful of them in order to be considered fully-qualified wizards, so Joe was trying to commit them to memory, but he did not find the task enjoyable.

It did, however, enable him to offer an example when Professor O’Malley asked one. After a few seconds of thought, thinking over which would sound best, he contributed the Deflating Draught. Not terribly interesting, but definitely an antidote and not as cumbersome and generic-sounding as the Antidote to Common Poisons or as why-does-Joe-know-that inducing as, say, the Antidote to Veritaserum. That last thought made Joe wonder if he was perhaps being a tad paranoid out of sheer habit – at home, he had to think about whether people would wonder why he knew something all the time – but since there was nothing to be done about it if so, he didn’t dwell on it for long. John seemed to think the teachers were monitoring them all all the time anyway, seeing what they were interested in and flagging potential deviants, and since he had resolved to believe that his brother was sane, he had to consider the possibility that just because he was paranoid didn’t mean they might not really be out to get him.

The fact that the antidote they were learning was the hiccupping solution was the kind of thing John would have taken as proof that the teachers really were trying to keep them from learning anything powerful, but Joe thought it was probably more a case of learning something practical than anything. The purebloods were the only ones who had to worry about being for-real poisoned someday, he thought, but everyone in the room was going to get hiccups sooner or later. Hiccups were annoying, so if they went on for more than a few minutes, it would be good to have something to cure them, especially if it was somewhat shelf-stable. Joe couldn’t say he really fancied the thought of handling all the knives and open flames needed to brew most potions while he was racked with hiccups….

“I think this might be the most useful potion we’ve ever learned,” said Joe to his neighbor as he opened his textbook and prepared to start making a potion. "And one of the very few that I don't even think my brother could figure out how to hypothetically use as a weapon," he added as penance for his earlier paranoia, though he said it dryly enough that he assumed most people would realize he spoke primarily in jest.

Kelsey Atwater, Crotalus

November 15, 2016 6:53 PM
Kelsey sat pefectly straight in her seat in Potions as usual, her prefect badge gleaming from the front of her robes. It was a great honor for her to get it. First of all, she was only the second of her first cousin group to get it, with only Chaslyn previously receiving the honor.

And unlike her cousin, Kelsey had had real competition for it but then her competition was Alistair, who had the Quidditch Captain position and that might have been a deciding factor. As for Caelia, well she was very sweet and a perfectly proper lady but Kelsey still felt she was personally a better choice than her friend. Caelia still would have been a better choice than some of the people who recieved the honor in other year and house groups because she was from the right kind of family, though at least in Kelsey's year the best people won-well, she wasn't necessarily sure Jemima was better for the role than Owen or Andrew but the thing was, that group was overall pretty softhearted and as far as Kelsey could tell Owen and Jemima were like opposite gender versions of each other but the three of them were at least of good breeding. After all, the boys were a Brockert and a Carey.

However, she had spent her entire life being the ideal pureblood lady. Being an example that others should follow. It was nice to be recognized for it. Not that the Crotalus had never been complimented on that front before whether it was someone telling her parents how proper and polite she was or her parents asking Natalie why she couldn't be more like Kelsey. Still, the fact that the school noticed it made Kelsey quite proud.

Besides, it helped make up for the fact that her little sister had gotten into Pecari. Not that one could blame the staff for a magical potion that decided that Natalie had predominantly Pecari qualities but it did pacify her slightly. Pecaris were generally speaking not even remotely proper acting, even some of the ones from good families and Kelsey was terribly worried that they'd be an awful influence on her impressionable little sister. Besides, it was not a place where Atwaters went and the Brockerts didn't have the strongest tendency for it.

To make matters worse, Natalie's roommate was some nothing Muggleborn! How could they expect her sister to be exposed to such things? Muggleborn Pecaris were just slightly more well mannered than animals!

However, Kelsey could not worry about it right now, for she had Potions to attend and she was every bit as good a student as any Aladren was-better student likely than Amity had been-it was just that much like Savannah, brains weren't what she valued most. They were up there, but manners and good breeding were overall more important. Therefore, once released to work on the hiccup solution, Kelsey looked for a partner who possessed these qualities and asked "Will you please work on this assignment with me?"

OOC-Apologies to Muggleborn Pecaris, Muggleborns and Pecaris in general, and Caelia. Also, to the fifth year Tepps if any of them has problem with being called softhearted. I'm not even sure whether or not she meant that as an insult or just a statement of fact. Oh and to Olivier for Kelsey not thinking of him as being worthy of prefect apparently.

Jax

November 21, 2016 8:20 PM
Jax’s experience with Purebloods was only that they turned their backs on you when you needed them the most. When Jax’s father was murdered and Jax was forever cursed with Lycanthrope, his Pureblood relatives were nowhere to be found. His mother was in grief and alone with two small children, one of which was forever damaged and neither the Donovans or the Raptis’ had been there to help her. In fact, the Raptis were so ashamed of what had occurred that they had thrown Dahlia and her children out of their estate. Heaven forbid a family tragedy and a terrible bite leave a stain one their embroidery business name. The Raptis had power and status. They had money; they could have protected Jax and his family. They chose not to. He had no idea what the Donovans’ excuse was. Jax had no real memory of them. All he knew was their Quidditch supply business and from what Jax had learned was that one of his father’s uncles had done some shady inport/export business that had mixed with the wrong people. Jax didn’t have all the details, but he’d have to confront his mother about it at some point.

He gave a smile to Sutton’s stance on the whole Pureblood marriage thing. If Jax was still a Donovan in the Pureblood world, he would have probably had to deal with that (if he hadn’t been a werewolf, of course), but he was thankful that it was not something he really had to think about. What he did have to think about was what his potential future would be. He really didn’t know. Who would hire someone that had to disappear for a few days a month due to ‘health’ reasons? He’d just have to be his own employer… however that would work out.

Jax really wasn’t sure what Sutton wanted to hear regarding her sister’s behavior. Jax and Gia both took their studies seriously and he couldn’t exactly say that he was missing out on life. He was simply striving for a better one. For him, for his sister, and for his mother. “How do you know that she isn’t living the life that she wants? That she’s not enjoying what she is doing now?” Jax asked her. “I find that I am happier when I do well on exams than when I do not. That happens because I study hard for them. It also brings joy to my mother and that matters to me. Perhaps your sister shares this feeling with me?”
