Professor Sophie O'Malley

“Let’s talk about antidotes!” Sophie began with typical enthusiasm. “First off: what are they? Can anyone tell me?” She selected the first raised hand she saw and awaited their answer. Their textbooks would tell them that an antidote was any potion or substance that would alleviate or lessen a negative effect contributed to another potion, spell, or condition, but anything in that vein would have been acceptable. “There we are, five points to you,” she smiled when a right answer was procured. Sophie was the kind of professor to give out points for these little, generally easy or spelled-out in-class questions to encourage participation.

“Now, can anyone name an example?” There were many possible examples, so she allowed three or four different raised hands to provide their inputs. “Did I hear the hiccupping solution?” the blonde asked rhetorically, knowing full well whether or not she had. “Interesting as that’s what we’ll be brewing today. Now, a hiccup is, as you can imagine, not nearly as dangerous a condition as, say, being poisoned, but I for one am still glad that we’ve found a potion for it. Those little things are so irritating! As you can imagine," she added almost as an afterthought, "this potion cures hiccups."

“You’ll find instructions on page 233 of your textbooks,” Sophie said. “No worries if you forgot your book today, though, as I’m sure a neighbor wouldn’t mind sharing with you. You know you’re always welcome to brew in pairs or small groups as long as you still get the work done.” She gave a kind smile. “Unless anybody else has questions, feel free to get brewing.”

OOC: Instructions are:

Combine two crocodile hearts with three eyes of newt
Heat until potion is green
Add two tsp of flobberworm mucus
Stir fourteen times clockwise
Let simmer seven minutes, or until the potion is a turquoise color
Add another tsp of flobberworm mucus
Stir twelve times counterclockwise
If the potion is a pale yellow, wave your wand over the cauldron twice and leave it to brew for an additional ten minutes

Please note that the hiccupping solution is only mentioned briefly in the books and there were no actual canon instructions, so these are what I have decided they are for our current purposes. Its mention in the books was brief, as something that Draco had learned previously to a mentioned brewing in his sixth year. To that end, I imagine the wand-waving part to be key, and therefore success may vary with magical level and year, so the final result for third years may be a bit off in coloration and effectiveness.

Additionally, all IC extra points do translate to OOC bonuses, so if you want the points for your House, make sure to answer Sophie’s questions! A list of things considered antidotes can be found here. Have fun!
