Of all the things Atlas felt nostalgia for, he never thought passing on the torch of baking club host would leave him with such a pit in his stomach. It was such a small part of his life, but meaningful none the less. So after much deliberation, and with only a month left before graduation, he decided it was time to pass on the baton. Even so, he couldn’t bring himself to start the meeting on such a low tone. Pushing the his specially enchanted scroll beneath the desk, he began the lesson as normal.

They were nearing the middle of the lesson, finally the fun part. The cakes had come out of the oven and where ready to be decorated. At this point in the year Atlas usually suggested using the cake marbling techniques they had learned earlier in the year. Although some preferred the traditional chocolate and yellow cake marbling, Atlas liked to experiment with colors. He decided this cake was going to be light purple and red. He always thought those colors looked good together.

"Okay, now that the cakes are out we can begin the decorating. I know that fondant can be tricky but just be sure that your cake is properly layered with the crumb coat and smoothed down. Any bumps in the crumb layer will show right through to the frosting,” he stated mixing his buttercream frosting in a bowl. Taking a spatula, he expertly smoothed the frosting onto the cake, reminding the class of the proper way to use the spatula.

“You can see I’m just putting it onto the end of the spatula, it helps with control. Work with a nice glob of frosting and in short motions the first time around. We can smooth everything down after we have a nice coat on it,” he stated with a smile. His eyes peered up from his cake to glance at the club. He had come a long way from his first meeting as host. The nervous butterflies were still there, but only when he was demonstrating a particularly challenging technique. He didn’t like messing up in front of everyone and always fretted beforehand. Now however, the butterflies were replaced by a strong wave of nostalgia for the club that would soon no longer be his to lead.

“Now that we have cast a cooling spell on our cake, all we have to do is place the fondant on top,” Atlas stated as he began to roll out his yellow fondant, “you can make it any color using magic, but its helpful to think of colors that complement the inside of the cake.” In truth, the cake was a little bit of a surprise for a certain witch, hence the Pecari gold color. He knew she wasn't a fan of brown, so he opted for the more esthetically pleasing golden yellow.

“When putting the fondant on, you can either do it by hand or with a levitation spell. But if you are doing it by hand, remember to fold it in half first to make it easier to fold out onto your cake,” he stated as he skillfully placed the sheet over the cake. "Remember to do it in a nice smooth motion. If you can't then ask your neighbor to help you," he added as he smoothed out any air bubbles. "Once you have the fondant on, you can spend the rest of the class decorating it. I have provided fondant cutouts in a variety of shapes and sizes, but feel free to experiment with the fondant too,” he stated as he reached under the desk for the boxes of cutouts. However his hand grazed the scroll under the desk, forcing him to remember his special announcement. Taking a short breath to steady his emotions he grabbed the small scroll along with the boxes of cutters.

“The cutouts will be up here at the front in addition to this scroll. As most of you know, I will be graduating at the end of this year, and-," he paused thinking back on all the happy memories the club had given him,"I just want to thank each and every one of you for all the work you have put in to making this club fun. I really couldn’t have asked for more. I feel honored to have been your host for all these years,” Atlas could feel a little ball of emotions catch in his throat, but tried his best to stifle it with a cough.

"Um, I encourage any and all of you who are interested in the position of Baking Club Host, even if its just an inkling, to touch your hand to the bound scroll where it will write your name inside.” Atlas stated trying to ignore the painful nostalgia creeping up on him. He hoped that having a more private manner of nomination would help the more shy students find the courage to apply, thus the inconspicuous scroll. Atlas wanted to see the club continue to shine for years to come, and every great club needed a host. Being a host was the best decision he had ever made, well, he thought rolling out the brown fondant, one of them anyways.
