Wednesdays, Sophie felt, were an insult unto the system and ought to be treated as such. She was just not optimistic enough to look at the so-called hump day and go, halfway there, alright! as perhaps others were. No, she looked at the date each Wednesday morn and thought, Oh God, here we go. Her days were always jam-packed, so while she only taught three days a week (though she kept office hours on the other two weekdays), waking up on Wednesday always felt like it ought to be Friday. But it wasn’t. It was stupid, mean, nasty Wednesday.
She sighed. The Beginners had just left, which meant the Intermediates would be arriving any moment. They had until 3:15 to arrive for class, but she was not one to kick someone out for tardiness, finding their late presence preferable to no presence at all. At 3:17, she turned to the class. “Pop quiz,” she announced with semi-forced enthusiasm. “I mean… kinda.”
Sophie floated the stack of papers forward to the nearest student. “Take one and pass it on,” she instructed. “It’s a fill-in worksheet-style: I give you an antidote, you tell me what it does.” She glanced between the young faces before her, just checking for any latent hatred for her as a result of the quiz. “It’s out of thirty-five points. Thirty questions worth one point each, two points for putting your name on the page, and three for a bonus question. Not too bad, right?”
“That said, it’s only ‘kinda’ a pop quiz because I’m going to let you work in pairs,” she said with a smile. “No textbooks or anything, but you can use a partner as a resource. And, uh, if this ends up too hard somehow and a lot of you miss a bunch, I’ll do a curve.” The Pecari alumna was not the most prepared or experienced professor; she knew the quiz was easy to her, but she had years of experience brewing thanks to a life-long passion and a solid apprenticeship to an apothecary. Numerically valued grades weren’t her priority, anyway. She wanted to see comprehension, not statistics.
“Just bring them up to me when you’re done, or, hey, wingardium leviosa that thing back up if you’re feeling it. Just don’t give a classmate a papercut on their head or something. Pair up and get to it!”
OOC: this is your resource. Those listed antidotes and functions are the quiz, and the bonus question is “what ingredient is an essential part of most antidotes?” to which the answer is, as stated on the wiki page, the Mandrake.

Louis was having a bad day. Since he woke up, he’d faced problem after problem, none of them particularly major but, in addition to having woken up in a bad mood, enough to annoy him. Firstly he’d woken up too early. Now, this may seem preferable to waking up late, but Louis had woken with not enough time to get up and do something extra, but also not enough time to properly fall back asleep. As a result he’d been half-dozing when his alarm had gone off. Secondly, he’d got soap in his mouth whilst singing in the shower (Louis often sang in the shower. He felt it set him up for the day ahead. Luckily for Dustin, he had a reasonably good voice, and generally kept to a reasonable volume level). Thirdly, his hair hadn’t been entirely cooperating in its styling that morning, and his favourite socks were in the wash. And to cap it all off, he’d received a letter from his father at breakfast, the contents of which were usually guaranteed to contain some irritating reference to how Louis should be making the best of his education and was expected to be the top of the class. Which was only what Louis expected of himself, but that didn’t stop it annoying him. And so there he was, sitting in Potions and feeling more than a little peeved.
At least Potions wasn’t going to be too much of a nightmare today. Louis wasn’t really in the right frame of mind for carefully cutting up ingredients (and would probably stab someone if he got his hands on a knife) or accurately timing a stewing potion. But a pop quiz – even if just ‘kinda’ a pop quiz – was something he could handle without death or destruction. Call him a nerd – or more accurately an Aladren – but Louis didn’t really mind quizzes. On the whole he was pretty up to date with his studies, not leaving homework to last minute, and reading up on the topics before the lessons. And he found that if you knew the material well enough, quizzes could be almost, dare he say it, fun. Besides, he always found it satisfying to do well. The only problem was that this was meant to be done in pairs. He could probably get away with doing it alone, but even when in a bad mood Louis was still a sociable creature. Just a little snarkier than usual.
“So, fancy pairing up with the fabulous Louis Valois?” he asked, turning to the person sitting next to him with a half-grin. “I promise not to deliberately give you any wrong answers.”

Tobi had been worried about the ball all year. There was only one witch who he wanted to ask but, as he’d predicted, she had already been asked because she was Makenzie and she was absolutely captivating in every way. He didn’t really want to go with anyone else but he knew that he would have to ask a date or else Liac might take it upon himself to ask for Tobi. He shuddered remembering the last ball when Liac had done just that, landing Tobi in a bit of sticky water with his date’s protective brother…
But Tobi was determined not to let that happen again. He just…didn’t really talk to the majority of the female population at Sonora other than when necessary, in class pairings. He might have asked Laila because she was nice enough and he had more interactions with her than some of the other witches but he didn’t want to give her the wrong idea. He kind of got the impression that she was the sort of witch who liked any wizard who so much as smiled the right way at her and since Tobi didn’t like her like that…well, he didn’t think that was the best idea.
However actually finding a witch was proving to be harder than originally expected. Tobi would have been happy with anyone so long as they were nice and wouldn’t mind going with the son of a metal charmer, but he worried about ruining the reputations of the society witches who went to their school. As the ball approached though, Tobi began to realize that he was running out of time and pretty soon whoever he asked would think he was a jerk for waiting until the last minute.
One day, though, he realized that the answer had been staring at him in the face for the entire term. His roommate and friend, Aiden O’Neil had asked one of the Brockert twins in their year to go to the dance. Well, he couldn’t very well let one twin have a date while the other twin had to go alone. That could hardly be good for encouraging sibling affection. Now, however, he fretted over actually asking her. As Scarlett was one of the girls that Tobi had had very little interaction with in the past, he was unsure if his asking would make her uncomfortable. But as he was Aiden’s friend and Aiden was going with her twin, he thought that perhaps the school—and society—could over look his status for a night (he was pureblooded after all, not that he believed in those things) and allow Scarlett—and himself—some slack.
It was Professor O’Malley’s pop quiz potions class, however, that allowed Tobi to finally make his move. After asking Liac if it was okay if they worked with other people that day, Tobi made his way over to where Scarlett Brockert was sitting. “Hi,” he said with a shy smile. “I was wondering if you might want to go to the ball with me? I know we don’t know each other very well but it would be my pleasure to accompany you if you were willing.”

Potions was far from Scarlett's favorite class. It required patience and attention to detail and these were not really qualities she posessed and once she got through her CATS, she was probably not going to continue this subject. Actually, truth be told, she wasn't all that into academics to begin with and as the year pressed on, getting closer to summer, she found it harder and harder to go to class and pay attention. Her mind was already yearning to go on vacation, it was at Livilian royal balls and on the beaches of St. Berylla's getting a tan not in stuffy classrooms. The only class where her mind stayed present was Defense, and it wasn't even present on subject matter, but focused on Professor Pye's hot backside.
On the other hand, Scarlett wasn't even a little interested in checking out Sophie. First of all, the Pecari liked men. Secondly, Sophie was married to her cousin and while Scarlett liked her fine as a cousin-in-law that would have added a whole layer of ick even if she had been attracted to women.
So of course, Scarlett was less than thrilled at the mention of a quiz. What was the point? At least though they'd be able to work in partners. And it could have been worse, she'd heard the younger students had been subjected to research papers Ugh! Scarlett truly despised those. For one thing, her penmanship was rather atrocious and she was sometimes marked down because professors couldn't read her writing. Secondly, they were boring. There was not a single subject that would be assigned to them to write about that she felt would retain her interest and even if there was, Scarlett was certain that after doing massive amounts of research on something, she'd be tired of the topic for a bit after.
Fortunately, that was not her problem right now. Her problem was finding someone to work with on this quiz. Preferably someone smart. Savannah would be ideal but Scarlett had arrived too late to find a place near her sister and anyway, even if she hadn't, this quiz was a surprise. So as she didn't know about said quiz, she couldn't make plans to work with her twin beforehand.
So, before she could make her way over there, or to one of her roommates, Tobi Reinhardt approached her. However, what he asked wasn't to work on the quiz, it was to go to the ball. "Sure!" She replied. That ought to make Joella happy, even though Scarlett didn't even know Tobi that well and certainly had no intention of doing inappropriate things with him. "We can hang out with Savannah and Aiden and maybe your cousin can do the prefect dance with mine," She presumed he knew whom she meant because Liac was as far as she knew the only cousin Tobi had here and he was Chaslyn's friend and obviously the only other cousins of hers who would be doing the prefect and Head Student dance would be Serena and Duncan and Serena was being escorted by Theodore and she figured Duncan wasn't interested in dancing with Liac any more than she was in checking out Sophie "and my roommates and Joella's date can join us too. Also, do you want to work on the quiz together since you're already here?"
