Atlas moved the last cauldrons into place as the first few members walked into the club room. Although at any other time it would just be called the Potions room, on special days such as this it was transformed into a bakery accompanied by a rainbow of delightful smells. Today the aroma dancing through the room smelled of warm milky chocolate. February, the month of love was just around the corner, and although he would rather be making bitter tarts, Atlas felt he owed his club members a good meeting. As a result he decided on a delectable chocolate truffle recipe. Besides regardless of how he was feeling, he wanted to give his friends the chance to spread their own happiness, love and all that hoopla.
"Hello everyone,” he said greeting the club as the last few members took their seats. “The recipe for today is for chocolate truffles. Although it seems simple, it can get a little complicated especially with making the hard coating. I will be demonstrating how to make coconut covered truffles, but I have supplied a wide range of coatings for you to use to decorate them as well.” He said gesturing to a side table by the tea. In the small bowls was just about any topping that a person could think of, as well as several piping bags filled with white chocolate- compliments of the well stoked Sonora kitchen. The ability to customize their creations seemed to be popular so he wanted to make sure that there were plenty of options for this recipe as well.
Atlas pushed the board with a lot less enthusiasm than usual, revealing the long complicated recipe for the day. It wouldn’t turn out to be nearly as long of a recipe, due to the delightful fact that they could use their magic to cool the truffles quickly. He figured it was more time to focus on decorating the little romantic bites of loneliness, so he didn’t feel so bad cutting corners with a slightly shorter, yet equally complicated recipe.
“So lets get started", he said facing the group with a slightly forced smile as he demonstrated the more difficult parts of the recipe, such as how to ensure the correct temperature of the molten chocolate. He felt his cheeks hurting from his smile, it was much more difficult to maintain than he had thought, but he was fairly sure no one would notice. Chocolate, love, Valentines. It all felt so superficial and fake. Although he couldn't say he felt very genuine either. He wondered if he looked more crazed than happy, becoming self-conscious, he kept his head down for the last few minutes of the lecture- hoping he wouldn’t need to repeat himself if he spoke loud enough.
Once the self torture was over, he treated himself to a cup of warm ginseng tea. He had earned it. Walking over to the front desk, he examined his coconut truffles who all seemed to stare sappily back at him. The girl whom he would have sent these to had decided to rip out his heart and stop all over it. Now what was he supposed to do with these? Atlas didn’t even like chocolates! Even so, he tentatively popped one into his mouth, just to give his antsy hands something to do. It tasted sickeningly sweet, but he felt a little better. He supposed having his insides oversaturated with cocoa and sugar was as good a replacement for a love as anything.
