Atlas Primred

Spring had arrived at Sonora, and nothing could be better than the sweet smells emanating from the Baking Club. Atlas had arrived early with a few baskets of fresh picked peaches (complements of the house elves), and was just finishing taking one of the cakes out of the oven as the members began to arrive. He greeted them with a few smiles and small waves, happy that he was able to get to know the different members over the past few months. He had signed up to be Host because he liked to bake, but he was happy to be getting to know new people too.

“Hi, everyone,” he said with a smile once the members took their seats. Since the start of the year he had become much more comfortable in his role as host. He no longer fidgeted, and was more confident speaking in front of everyone, even if he was still a shy teenage boy. “Since its spring, I thought it might be nice to make something with fruit. So today we will be making a Peach Upside-down Cake,” he said with a smile, anticipating the deliciousness that awaited them. Peaches had always been Atlas’ favorite fruit since he was a little kid. Although not famous for them, Santa Cruz had its share of fruit trees, so there was never a shortage during the warm months. Atlas couldn’t understand how anyone disliked the delicious fruit, as they were the perfect combination of sweet and tart, especially when cooked. Unfortunately, his little sister absolutely hated peaches. She insisted they looked like a ‘hairy butt’ and refused to eat them, much to Atlas’ dismay.

“So this recipe is kind of a challenge because it involves using the stove and oven, but it really isn’t that bad,” he said gesturing to the directions he had written on the board. “The first part is pretty simple, just cutting, peeling, and then mixing dry ingredients, so I’ll just demonstrate the caramelizing process,” he said taking out a deep cast iron skillet. As he cooked the butter and sugar into a light brown syrup, he carefully held up a spoonful so that the members would know what they were aiming for with consistency. Even if he preferred spicy foods to sweets, the smell of the caramelized sugar was still quite lovely.

Once he was done, he set the pan aside, and prepared to get out of the way so the members could work on their own cakes. “Everything you need is up here on the counter, just let me know if you need any help. Oh!” he said, remembering the most important part of that day's meeting, “-there will be a card going around to thank the house elves for the peaches. If you could all sign it, that would be great,” he said as he placed the card on the first table. The card was fairly simple in itself, a few butterflies and flowers surrounding the words ‘thank you’ with a blank inside. It wasn’t much, but Atlas thought they should do something to show their appreciation to the house elves, since they had been such a big help in finding fresh ingredients. In addition to the card, Atlas was also planning on giving them a few of the cakes he had made. He had already finished one before the start of the meeting, but he hoped to make at least one more in the meantime.

“Anyways…” Atlas continued, wracking his brain to make sure he had said everything he needed to, “I think that’s about it, so lets get started.”
