Professor Fawcett

To the younger years, the return to school was usually an occasion for feeling sluggish, tired and grumpy and unconcerned with their work. For the seventh years, John imagined it was rather different, as it had so abruptly been for him many years prior. For them, January didn't just mean the end of a holiday, it meant the beginning of the end of their time at Sonora. The beginning of the end of the time before the RATS.

John did not want the ones who'd stuck with Potions to feel panic, and kept an eye out for signs that anyone was nearing his or her breaking point, but his main way of expressing this was through making the class tough all year, in the hopes they would get used to it. The United States was not as bad about it as some countries, but in theory, an E on one of the exams to come meant the person who made it was qualified for a number of jobs, depending on the combination of exams they took and did as well on. They needed to be as ready as possible for anything the test, or world, might throw at them.

"Welcome, class," he said to the advanced group. The sixth years, if they were still in sympathy with the Intermediates about Januaries, would wake up soon enough. "I hope you all had an enjoyable holiday, and are ready now to return to work.

"I have for each of you a flask containing a fairly basic pain relief potion," he continued. "It would be appropriate for no more than muscle strain, a moderate headache, that sort of thing. Each of these potions, however, has been altered in some way. A bit of valerian root to make the drinker drowsy...a combination of goatweed and dandelion root to calm and cheer...or both. Your task is to use Scarpin's Revealaspell, specialis revelio, to determine what is in your potion, separate the components, reverse the setting charms binding them, and recreate the basic potion without the additions, as some people prefer to do without these.

"For homework, please read chapter 11 and the first ten pages of 12 and write a few paragraphs on the relationship between today's work and Golpalott's Second Law - three to five should do it. Once you've collected a sample, you may begin."

OOC: As usual, all posting rules apply, and details and creativity (feel free to make up theory, potions, etc.) equal more points. Tag Fawcett if you need him, and have fun!
