Waverly Canterbury

April 30, 2012 5:20 PM
Waverly had put in a lot of work into this baking club. After having a relatively short conversation with the headmistress, her club had been approved and Waverly, excited, had started the preparations immediately. The Potions classroom was the perfect place to do it, even though it reeked of a combination of potions. It was a weird smell, but the smell of cookies would soon overpower that. Waverly was an absolute sucker for cookies. She had decided that they would bake chocolate chip cookies today.

A few people had signed up interested in the club, and Waverly hoped that everyone who had signed up would come and bring their friends too. Who didn't like making food to eat? She wondered if that was partially why Professor Fawcett had agreed to be her club adviser. The other part could be because she was using his classroom and he probably didn't want to see it burst into flames, knowing her Potions skills. Well, she was good at baking and she took pride in it unlike her blatantly abysmal Potions grade...

Everything was ready. There was a makeshift oven that she had had help putting up with a fire going underneath to warm it to the perfect temperature: 350 degrees Fahrenheit. They were only going to make a dozen cookies each and Waverly had set up cookie sheets, pans, a stick of butter, white sugar, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, flour, baking soda, salt, and chocolate chips at the front of the room so people could grab it. The tables were set up still in the classroom formation, so there would be two people at each table. At the tables were two sets of teaspoons, tablespoons, bowls, whisks, and measuring cups. There were sinks and a place to heat cauldrons that, of course, came with the table, so the butter could be softened easily. Waverly knew that she usually used the microwave to soften her butter, but using a real fire would be a little faster, so she thought. That's where a mini cauldron would be useful!

A few people started coming in, and Waverly eagerly greeted them and told them to sit down at the desks in the front, counting them as they came in. The meeting was supposed to start at 4 p.m., right before dinner started and after classes. It wouldn't take too long for these to cool anyway, and Waverly had learned a cooling charm just for this club. She hoped the cookies wouldn't be too cold if she used it, but if people were in a hurry to get to dinner, then she'd have to use it. Or they would. Waverly personally liked to eat her cookies right out of the oven even if they were too soft and fell apart. The thought of cookies made her sigh.

The clock hit 4:05 and the second-year went up to the front of the room gleefully. "Hi everyone! Thanks for coming to the first baking club meeting! I'm Waverly, if you guys don't know, and today we're going to make chocolate chip cookies. Sorry if you guys don't like chocolate. I guess you could just not put the chocolate chips into the batter..." She wondered why she hadn't thought about that before.

"Anyway, I wrote the ingredients on the board." She smiled. "It feels like Potions class, huh? If you guys know how to bake, then feel free to do whatever you want! If not, I'll show you guys!"

The ingredients on the board read:
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
All this was at the front table that she was standing in front of. She wished she knew enough magic to have a spell hand the ingredients out like her professors did in class, but she had to go around doing it manually. After giving every table a stick of butter, a small bag of white sugar that would amount to one cup and another of brown sugar, 2 eggs, a small cup of vanilla extract to share, 1 cup of flour, a small amount of baking soda, some salt, and a bag of chocolate chips, she went back to the front, a little winded.

"Okay," she said in her older-sister voice. "First we're going to soften the butter--do that with the little cauldron like in Potions class--and then put that, the white sugar and the brown sugar together in the bowl. Then you're going to mix them together with the whisk." If older students knew a spell to mix it faster, she was envious of them. But not really at the same time. She softened her butter and mixed it together and looked up to see if anyone was having trouble.

Then she beat the eggs in one at a time, stirred in the vanilla, added the salt, and then stirred in the baking soda, flour, and chocolate chips. When she was done, it looked like a big, batter-y mess. And so delicious. "After you do all that mixing, you have to get some and pack them into little balls, and then flatten them onto the pan." The pans had been sprayed before so the cookies wouldn't stick when they were done. She made a ball of cookie dough and smacked it onto the pan. She did it eleven more times and then smiled at her club members. "Okay! Now we're going to put it in the oven and bake it for ten minutes."

OOC: Hi everyone! I guess we can act like this is a class post-wise with two people at a table sharing ingredients. Waverly's going to be at the front showing everyone how to do it, but if you have questions just tag me and I'll answer it for ya from the front of the room!

Clara Abernathy

April 30, 2012 9:24 PM
Clara made her way quickly to the potions room for what would be their first Baking Club meeting. She was soo excited she could hardly contain herself. She wondered the whole way what Waverly had chosen as their first project. Whatever it was Clara knew she would have fun trying to make it. She only hoped that she got the temp right on the oven so as not to have a repeat of her first baking fiasco. She groaned internally when she thought of her small mishap and knew that Amira would use it as an excuse to tease her. She rolled her eyes at the thought. So what if she does? Clara thought confidently. She knew her cousin loved her and only teased her for fun not to be mean. Whatever we're making, I'll just have to make mine 1000 times better than I did last time. Then she'll have nothing to tease me about anymore the plucky first year told herself. Then she really thought about it...

Ah boogers! I don't have to mess up again at baking for Mir to make fun of me she thought slightly dismally. All I have to do is be myself and she'll have an endless supply of material she frowned slightly, gently smacking herself on the forehead. Oh well...at least she'll never be bored where I'm concerned she laughed slightly entering the potions room. She found Waverly already in the room and all the materials on the table behind her that they would be using. She waved Hello and took one of the seats as instructed. She glanced curiously at the board behind her and read slowly down the list. Her sapphire blue eyes widened slightly when she saw the words "Chocolate Chips" on the board.

She hung her head slightly towards her lap and shook it. She almost groaned aloud when she heard Waverly say they were making cookies. But not just any cookies. CHOCOLATE CHIP cookies! The very same ones Clara had attempted to make once before by herself and had failed MISERABLY on. The very same kind she had almost accidentally set her kitchen on fire trying to make. Sweet wounded cheeseits Batman! Why did it have to be Chocolate Chip cookies? her mind protested adamently. Her freckled forehead wrinkled slightly as she openly frowned. She let out a deep breath and told herself it would be fine. You can do this she said to herself softly. I know you can

She set herself to work following the instructions before her. She knew that with Waverly there watching over her it would keep any mishaps down to a low roar (or so she hoped). Clara started with what she knew would be one of the more difficult tasks for her...playing with fire. She placed the butter into the small hot cauldron to melt. While it melted, she measured out the 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/2 cup of brown sugar, pouring them both into her bowl one at a time. She then reached for the melted butter. About the time she was pouring it into the mix the other person sharing her table showed up. Clara glanced up from pouring her butter into the bowl and greeted her table mate cheerfully.

"Hello...lets see if I can do this without turning myself some funky color, shall we?" she laughed at her own bad joke.

Normally Kitty wasn’t a big believer in superstitions, they just didn’t have enough solid facts to appease the truth seeking girl. But, she couldn’t help the slight feeling of doom when she entered the Potions classroom. It felt like a bad omen to be attempting one of her worst skill sets…in her worst subject classroom. Really, why ask for trouble like that? Then again, it would probably be harder to burn down the potions class room, than it would be to burn down the kitchens. So maybe it made sense after all.

“Hi Waverly!” Kitty greeted the younger girl who’d set the whole thing up as she went to find a seat. Some of her worry faded when she realized that this would be more like an easy bake oven than real cooking. Lucky for her, Waverly had already measured everything out and all she had to do was mix it up. That didn’t sound too difficult, right? Well, at least this time she wouldn’t get the different measurements all messed up or forget which ingredients she’d already added and accidentally add them again.

Chocolate chip cookies sounded wonderful, even if it was something she’d mucked up on more than one occasion before she’d been banished from the kitchen at home. I need to find a man that can cook to merry or when I grow up I’m going to starve to death Kitty realized as she went in search of a partner. No one had joined her table and there was no way in the world Kitty was going to attempt to cook all by herself. “Hello…lets see if I can do this without turning myself some funky color, shall we?” the girl Kitty chose to sit by said.

Kitty’s eyes widened comically at the admission, turn herself colors?? No matter how disastrous Kitty’s kitchen adventures had been in the past, she never managed to turn herself strange colors. “Really?” The curious girl asked, wanting to know all the details. “How did you manage that?”

Fae Sinclair

May 08, 2012 10:27 PM
Fae had no idea why she was in here. She had never baked in her life. Her mother had never baked in her life. And, if pressed, Fae was certain her grandmother had never baked in her life. So then, why was she here? She knew that when she married, they would have at least one house elf to do all the cooking and cleaning. There would be no reason for her to even be in the kitchen. But, the truth was, Fae had no idea on what to do with herself. Everyone had hobbies, but she wasn’t sure if she did. Playing the piano was not a hobby (years of lessons for her and her siblings did not make all that fun for her), she didn’t think crocheting was a hobby either even if she was pretty good at it, and because she had only ever killed plants, she could not copy her mother and sister in having gardening as a hobby.

That left Fae feeling rather empty. Was she not good at anything that remotely gave her entertainment? She felt that she should, if anything else, give baking a try. The worst is that she would be rubbish at it and never try it again. The best is that she will be wonderful at it. Of course, there was always the possibility that she would be rubbish at it, but have so much fun doing it that she continues it until she passes. Well… if she really was terrible at it, but loved it, she just didn’t have to tell her husband what she was doing all day long while he was working. That seemed like a fair deal to her.

She read the ingredients on the board and nearly cried. It seemed far more complicated than a potion and even watching the younger girl work on her own cookies, Fae felt that there was no way she would ever master something that dealt with technique. Who was she fooling? Fae would never be good at anything. She will be an awful wife because she has no social skills. She’ll be a stupid wife because she couldn’t get the simplest of things. She’d be utterly useless to her husband and now, now she couldn’t even find something to keep her busy.

Taking a breath, Fae gave herself a shake. If she started off thinking negative things, it was going to end up badly. Fae prepared the ingredients as the girl, Waverly, instructed (although she had no idea how soft the butter had to be) and mixed it as best she could. Should it be smooth? Or was lumpy like it currently was okay? Lumpy seemed to make clumps easier, that was good… she thought anyway. Patting them down, Fae stuck them in the oven and then wiped her face to get her hair out of it. By the end of this, she had flower all over herself, but she felt proud that she had been able to do it.

Of course… if they tasted any good was the real test of her skills.

“Really?” The curious girl asked, wanting to know all the details. “How did you manage that?”

Clara grinned sheepishly at the girl who had decided to join her at the table. She heard the girl's question and thought back briefly to how it had happened. Outside of her father Bryan telling his sister, her aunt Alora, about Clara's potion mishap nobody outside of the family knew the comical details. Clara had sort-of told her cousins when they asked her about it, but she had been kind-of vague when she told the story so her cousins had less to tease her about. She really didn't mind the teasing so much, but it still made her feel awkward when the subject was brought up. She decided as she stirred the buttery sugar mix in the bowl before her that it was time she got the story off of her chest. Who knew, maybe it would make her feel better about the whole thing.

She smiled slightly as she stirred the would-be cookie batter. "It happened while I was working on my very first potion by myself," she explained. "I had taken a bunch of stuff out of my dad's ingredient cabinet and stuck them on the table where my practice cauldron was. My dad and I had just finished doing a potion together and since it had turned into a raving success, I decided I was more than ready to try one on my own." The curly haired redhead shook her head as she thought back to the potion disaster. "I had no idea what I was mixing together but I figured it should make something, right? Anyways, I was about to add the final ingredient to the boiling liquid when my dad walked into the kitchen. He about scared me out of my pants when he yelled from across the room at me. "Clara Marie Abernathy! What in the sam hill do you think you are doing?" he yelled. I almost dropped the last ingredient, a mandrake root, directly into the pot. Instead of the whole root, I only dropped a drop of the juice from it in. Turns out that was more than enough of the plant cuz the next thing I know the stuff in my pot sort-of exploded and hit me in the face like some weird goo. I had managed to clean off the gooey part, but the side effect was that the stuff turned my skin green for almost a week. I complained to my dad that I looked like a walking, talking booger. He laughed at me," she explained to the older girl.

Clara felt slightly liberated in being able to tell someone the whole story and not cringe while she did it. Maybe I am getting better at this magic stuff she happily told herself, smiling happily at her table mate. "I hope my telling you about that doesn't make you feel too weird about making cookies with me," she told the girl hopefully. "My attempt at cookies this time should be much better than my first one," she assured the girl, continuing to stir the batter. "want to help me finish putting in the rest of the stuff?" she asked her, reaching for the egg and flour.

Kitty giggled when Clara finished up her story. The bell-like sound wasn’t meant to be mean but it really was a funny story. She could picture the young girl bright green and she couldn’t suppress the laughter. “Oh my gosh, that’s great! Wow, I didn’t know about potions or any of this before coming to Sonora, so I don’t have any potions stories to tell. Well, except that I’m completely horrible at them. I can’t believe I didn’t totally fail the class last term, but it was my lowest grade, I only got an A. Anyway, one summer my friends and I really wanted to dye our hair, and of course our parents said no.” A brilliant grin curved the Aladren’s pink lips as her eyes twinkled with mischief.

“So we got about thirty kool-aid packets, mine were all grape, and my friend Kelly used cherry. Well we each dumped all our packets into separate bowls, added just enough water to make a thick paste, and then put it in our hair and left it there for about three hours. When we finally rinsed it out, it was totally awesome! Except for the getting grounded until it faded out part.” Kitty chattered happily, remembering how vibrantly purple her hair was, even though her curls were dark, the purple managed to shine though giving her lovely purple undertones.

Her mom hadn’t thought it was lovely at all, but at least hers was dark enough to sort of hide it. Kelly’s hair had been blond and it turned an eye smacking fire engine red. “Nope I’m not weirded out or anything. I’ll probably end up ruining my cookies anyway.” Kitty gave the ingredients neatly laid out on the table a withering look, as if they were secretly plotting to mess up her cookies on purpose. “Sure!” Kitty said as she tucked her feet under her so she was kneeling on the chair to get a better view of what was going on. The flour was already pre-measured so Kitty dumped it into the mix that Clara already had going.

“Oh by the way I’m Katrina, but you can call me Kitty.” She said, embarrassment causing her pale cheeks to flush brightly when she realized she hadn’t introduced herself to the new first year. Tapping the egg on the side of the bowl just a smidge too hard, the top half cracked into about a billion pieces and fell into the batter. “Oops! Darn it.” The short Aladren glowered at the white flakes now swimming in swirls of white and yoke. “Er…I totally washed my hands, I can pick those out if you want me to.” Kitty mumbled as she continued to give the broken bits of egg shell a death look.

Clara giggled herself as she tried to picture the girl with fire engine red hair caused by kool-aid. It had never dawned on the 11 year old to color her hair with something you normally drink. She wasn't trying to be mean either by laughing, it was also a funny story. She smiled friendly at the girl who introduced herself as Kitty. She didn't think she was being rude at all for not saying it ahead of time. Clara realized that she herself hadn't said her name yet either. "It's totally okay. I'm Clara...its awesome to meet you Kitty." She watched Kitty crack the egg on the side of the bowl and then tried to stiffle another giggle as she watched the shell of the egg go into the batter she had begun to mix.

Clara very clearly saw herself doing the very same thing not that long ago and felt badly for Kitty. She especially felt bad when she saw the look of death Kitty was giving the broken egg pieces floating in the cookie batter. She put aside the bowl with the ruined mixture inside it and picked up the extra empty bowl that sat on their table. "Its totally okay," she assured Kitty, putting the other portion of butter into the cauldren to melt. "There's no need to pick them out...we'll just start from scratch. Can't be that hard, right?" she smiled encouragingly to Kitty. She poured the white sugar and the brown sugar into the new bowl and readded the melted butter. She began stirring it up again and made it ready for the next step.

"You ready to try again?" she asked Kitty encouragingly.

With more patience than Kitty thought she deserved after ruining the dough, Clara just smiled and began making a new batch with the second set of cookie dough making material. As quick as it came the scowl Kitty had been wearing melted into a sunny grin as sky blue eyes gave the few empty tables with cookie dough supplies a calculating look. If they messed up again, they would probably be able to sneak a few extra supplies to keep trying.

It didn’t take Clara too long to get back to the spot she’d been before the whole Humpty Dumpty egg routine had messed everything up and to the short girl’s stunned amazement the first year offered her yet another egg. That was unheard of. Usually if she mucked things up, be it in the kitchen, or during potions work, who ever she was working with no matter how they reacted to her fouling things up, be it with anger or smiles, they still didn’t let her try that part again. In fact, there were some people in potions who wouldn’t let her touch anything at all given her rather spectacular streak of failed potions over the years.

With wide eyes, Kitty gently accepted the egg as if it might spring to life at any second and leap out of her small hands to shatter onto the floor. “Really?? You really want me to try it again after that?” She asked, shock touching the edges of the words as she held the egg hesitantly and waited for Clara to change her mind and take the fragile thing back.

Clara watched Kitty hold the egg she handed her as if it might sprout legs and jump out of the girl's hands by itself and almost giggled aloud. “Really?? You really want me to try it again after that?” she heard Kitty ask, what sounded like pure shock in the older girl's voice. Clara grinned at Kitty and nodded. "Well of-course I do silly," she replied kindly. "Why wouldn't I? Can't make cookies without eggs right? So, let's get crackin!" She did laugh that time at her attempt at a bad joke. "If it makes you feel any better..." she started to say and then stopped herself momentarily when she realized what it was she was about to tell her. Clara shrugged. Either Kitty was going to be comforted by her admission or she was going to be terrified. Either way it was only fair to warn the poor girl.

She continued her previous statement. "If it makes you feel any better about the whole egg thing, I can't begin to tell you how many times I've done the same thing while trying to make these blasted little round things," the 11 year old confessed. "Not only did I get the shells of the eggs everywhere, but I once managed to set the batch I was making on fire. Believe me when I say that I am in no position to judge anyone, but as my dad always told me "If you find yourself falling out of the saddle, you gotta dust yourself off and get right back in." She could hear her dad's voice in her head as she spoke his favorite saying aloud. She smiled inspite of herself.

"So...what do you say we crack some eggs and make some cookies?"

“Wow!” Kitty exclaimed, she’d never set cookies on fire. “I think that we might be long lost sisters when it comes to cooking. I’m not allowed in the kitchen anymore because I accidentally made the microwave explode. I didn’t notice that the bowl I was using had metal designs in it. I mean, really who puts metal stars in a plastic bowl?” Kitty demanded, her tone full of exasperation. It wasn’t her fault that the person who made the bowl was crazy was it? Not that her mom cared about that little detail, it was just one more mistake in a long list of kitchen misshapes that finally led to her being forbidden to attempt to cook anything.

“I’m aloud to make stuff that doesn’t involve heat, well except the toaster.” She admitted grudgingly. “I survived this summer off of cereal, pop tarts, and peanut butter honey sandwiches.” The tiny Aladren gave Clara a brilliant smile. “So we can muck up our cookies together and then swipe a couple from the more culinary apt students yeah?” she whispered in a conspiratorial sort of way. If nothing else, Kitty had learned that even sort of (and sometimes epic) mistakes with cookie dough might ruin the cookies, but the dough was still pretty good to eat.

But now, it was time for the egg. “You’re going to be a good little egg aren’t you? Just be nice and break into two pieces alright?” She whispered to the egg in an attempt to reason with the inanimate object. Sometimes that worked with her computer when it started to act up so why shouldn’t it work with eggs? This time she gingerly tapped the egg on the side of the bowl. Too gently seems the silly thing refused to crack. Kitty huffed and gave the egg a disappointed glower as if it was a student who’d given the wrong answer in class. Tap….tap….taptaptaptapTAP…CRACK Finally the ridiculously hard shell gave way in a spider web of crazy cracks that showed how close it had been to just exploding all over the place. Biting her lip, Kitty poked her thumb nails into one of the bigger cracks and slowly pulled the shell apart enough for the egg to fall into the mix.

A brilliant grin curved Kitty’s lips as she held up the mangled shell that was still more or less in one piece and not floating in their dough mix. “I did it!”

Clara laughed lightly at Kitty's admission of blowing up her microwave. Clara herself had almost made that mistake, but luckily for her Lucy had managed to stop her before she had done it. No one had told Clara that forks didn't belong in the microwave. How in Merlin's name was she supposed to know that? Lucy hadn't been angry with her, she merely shook her head, helped Clara finish what she had been making (minus the fork) and sent her out of the kitchen. She hadn't exactly been banished from the kitchen, but nor was she left alone. Whenever Clara wished to "cook" something she was to be supervised at all times. She was told it was for her own safety, but really Clara figured it was for everyone else's not just her own. Another thing I can't do right the little red head had told herself as her list of mishaps and close calls only seemed to grow.

Except here at Sonora. Here she was actually being made to do things on her own or with another student and without the watchful eye of an adult every thirty seconds. Certainly there were adults around, but they were actually encouraging the students to do the things themselves and only intervening if there was a problem. Clara kind-of felt empowered, but mostly scared out of her mind. If she hurt herself at home she only had herself to worry about, if she hurt someone here that was a whole different ball of wax. She smiled at Kitty's conspiritous question and vigorously nodded her head, stiffling a giggle. "Most definately," she agreed just as conspiritously.

Clara watched with little trepidation as Kitty began tapping the egg on the side of the bowl praying that the little sphere didn't explode again. When she heard the final crack she held her breath as Kitty carefully poured the egg from the half shattered egg shell into the bowl without getting in any of the shell. She clapped excitedly for Kitty when she exclaimed "I did it!". Clara was soo proud of her partner. "Awesome!" she told Kitty. "I knew you could do it. Now for the dry stuff and...gulp...baking these bad boys," she gulped mockingly. "You ready to do this?" she wiggled her eyebrows playfully at Kitty as she reached for the other ingredients.

Aubrielle Thornton

May 23, 2012 8:38 PM
Ever since working with Waverly in Transfiguration class, Aubrielle was excited to go to the Baking Club meeting. She couldn’t help but be excited as the special day drew nearer. The night before the first meeting was to take place she couldn’t help but bounce around the Teppenpaw Common room like a little butterfly or frog. Whichever animal or insect the people around her thought she was, she didn’t care. What she cared about was how happy she was that her new friend had gotten what she’d wanted and clearly she wanted to go and join in the fun and excitement!

Now that the day had dawned, not even sleep would keep Aubrielle Reece Thornton from Baking Club! Sure, once she woke up she still had classes to go to, but what she was looking forward to was Baking club, not classes! Classes were boring that day and all she wanted to do was go to Baking Club!

Baking is just like making a set or a costume, its just that you get to eat it too! she thought to herself as she skipped happily from her last class to the Potions classroom for the meeting. When she got to the room Waverly was there, so was Clara and two other girls she wasn’t too sure who they were. B waved to Clara and Waverly and took a seat at the table next to Clara’s. She knew what happened when her cousin tried baking the last time and she sorta wanted to see it first hand, close by. Brielle winked at Clara and glanced around her at the cookie sheets, tools and ingredients around her with a smile on her face. We’re making cookies… she thought to herself, laughing inwardly at the thought of Clara baking…

Waverly went up to the front of the room and happily welcomed them and introduced herself and what they’d be making that day. Brielle smiled broadly. She loved chocolate, always had, and chocolate chip cookies were a favorite in their house. The whole family knew how good Alora’s cookies were, and Brielle remembered that they were almost as good as Aunt Sophia’s before she’d passed away…

Waverly mentioned that the ingredients were written on the board and that she’d show them how if they didn’t know how to bake.

1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
she copied down on the bit of paper in front of her. She wasn’t sure if the board would erase, but she had it all written down if it did. All of those things were on the big table at the front of the room and Waverly walked around to each group with the stuff they’d need and walked back up to the front to tell them what to do. Brielle noticed that she was a little bit winded, but assumed it was because she’d been walking around the room to each group with the ingredients they’d need and didn‘t think anything of it after that.

Waverly explained that they had to soften the butter first and then that they would have to add the sugars into the bowl and mix with a whisk. Brielle looked at her partner, smiled and said, “I’ll add the sugars and whisk it if you want to soften the butter?”
