Better late than Never... by Elizabeth

Elizabeth slid into the potions chambers, a little late. Okay, so she was really late, but she slipped silently into a seat in the back, hoping the professor wouldnt' see her. Then a thought came upon her. Hello! The professor of Potions was Professor Connell! Her Head of House! Ok, well at least I know she won't deduct house points from me... I think... Elizabeth thought, then read the board, her eyes then flicking about to find a partner...\n\n

Classes by TJ O'Riley

TJ's eyes flashed around the room, a bored, detached expression on his face. He had contemplated not going to classes, afterall, the thought of even bothering to do work, especially in the Defense Against Dark Arts class was laughable at best. However, Potions was a subject that was useful and effective in more ways then one. It was a bit messy- an unfortunate occurence- but its usefulness outweighed its problems, and so TJ was here.

He tapped his fingers on the table idly. Relaxing charms were a waste of time, however he had confidence in the teacher that they would move onto more valuable potions as they progressed throughout the year- perhaps even onto a sleeping drought or a vanishing potion.

His eyes traversed the room again as students paired off. The irrecognizable ones he wrote off immediately, and the ones that he did recognize already had suitable partners. His eyes landed on the Lavine girl. She was a pureblood- abet a bit missleaded one, and she had slapped him, but that could all be forgotten until a latter time, when the minor problem of finding a worthy partner was accomplished.

Miss Lavine had amused him with her antics earlier. This could turn out interesting... very interesting.

TJ walked over to the Lavine girl and smile, a sideways quirkish charming smile that he rarely graced on anyone.

The smile almost hurt.

"Allow me to introduce myself." He drawled slightly, holding out his hand. "We seemed to have gotten off with a bad- " He winced slightly "well, to be honest, terrible start. My apologies for my earlier actions. I was in a horrid mood and my tongue ran away with me. My name is TJ O'Riley. Pleased to make your aquantence." \n\n

Hmm by Elizabeth

Elizabeth looked at TJ. She was sure now that she'd seen him at some party, or gathering of somesort. She took in a deep breath, deciding what to do. He was taking the first move towards civility, and she had to give him credit for that much. TJ had also apologized, which was also something that she didn't hear much from other purebloods. Usually when they said something, they meant it.

She made up her mind quickly and hoped she wouldn't regret it. Elizabeth sat up straight and shook her head slightly so that her long ebony hair would fall back in it's proper place.

"Elizabeth Lavine," she extended her own hand, "Terribly sorry about how I acted as well. You see, I highly value the precepts of friendship, and as an ally, I felt it my duty to allow you to know that I was not going to accept such an attack upon Sally Porter." She took a less formal note, "And I do believe we've met somewhere before. Have you ever been to New Orleans? Perhaps we've met at one of my families parties."\n\n

Perhaps by TJ

Party in New Orleans. TJ thought about it, narrowing his eyes briefly in concentration. His parents traveled all over the country, but he was fairly certain he'd been to one in New Orleans. The party had ended abruptly and his mothers rough hands pulling him out the door had caused him to spill butterbeer on the carpet.

He'd been six, and the punishment had been harsh. It was his first and last social mistake at a party.

"I believe so." He smiled slightly. "It was a memorable experience."

He opened the potions text book and gestered to it briefly.

"Shall we begin?" \n\n

Sure by Elizabeth

She tilted her head slightly in a nodding fashion and went to get the ingredients they needed. Elizabeth looked at the shelves of random ingredients, and finally chose the ones prescribed for this potion. A relaxer, was it? Oh well, she didn't exactly care for potions, although she knew that it came in very handy, transfiguration was more her field. If she really even had a "field" to begin with. Elizabeth wasn't quite a student type of person, she was a quidditch player more than anything.

So, she thought mildly to herself, This is the academic life... Not that exciting is it?

Elizabeth brought the ingredients back to their table and put them all out. She took her seat and looked up the proper procedure. As soon as she'd started to prepare the potion, she decided to strike up some conversation.

"So," she said, pulling her hair back into a low ponytail, "Other than at a party, where else might I have seen you? My family knows O'Reillys that live all over the country, where does your branch live?" \n\n

Interesting by TJ

TJ glanced at her sideways. That was interesting. The only O'Riley's he knew was in a secluded region in the most despicable place in the world. Massachusetts. The liberal movement had taken storm so instead of sending him to Salem, his parents and relatives had decided to send him somewhere more conservative, somewhere he might find people with similar values.

Apparently he had some unknown relatives.

He shook his head in disgust. Unknown meant that they'd been disowned from the family. He tapped his fingers of the table, putting in potion ingredients as needed. The idle motion reminded him of the sea. A disgusting salt filled place where the only thing he could do was ruin his clothes.

Ah, that was it. He had a few second cousins living in California and a great Aunt and her clan living in Florida.

"I'm from Massachusetts. The commonwealth of the United States." He actually looked at her full on, his eyes lit on the hairstyle and he smiled slightly. "You look good in a ponytail." He dropped the next ingredient, cat-tongue, into the potion without a second thought and it fizzed green. He smiled slightly. The potion was going well.

"We've probably met at the Washington D.C Banquet."He glanced at her again. He hadn't forgotten about the slap in the face, no matter how relaxed he looked and the ring on her fingers danced at him mockingly. She had been a good potions part thus far and although he'd never forgive, he might find it in his heart to forget. "It's a shame that first generations are invited isn't it?"

The test glinted in his eyes. If she was a upstanding pureblood she'd know what he meant. If not... well potions would have to end before either of them found out.

He could only promise one thing.

It would not be pretty.

Yes, Interesting indeed... by Elizabeth

Elizabeth looked at him and raised her eyebrows in the cunning fashion that she'd seen so many times at his comment on her hairstyle. She shook her head slightly, half to show off her silky, straight raven hair, and half to show she was accepting his compliment.

"Yes," she said after he'd finished, "I remember that. Lovely party, wasn't it? And on the subject of 'First Generations', all I have to say is that I was glad of their exclusion. Could you imagine, at a party our families attended? The absolute horror."

Elizabeth rolled her sapphire eyes disgustedly at the thought. No more was she an in between rebel of her family, oh no, she'd had enough playing around. Elizabeth Lavine was a rich and well known pureblood girl, not someone to be associated with muggleborn trash.

She noticed slightly out of the corner of her eye that TJ was staring at her ring. She twisted it around so that the stone lay face-down, with only the golden band in view. Elizabeth hoped that he'd take it as a small sign of her apology. She would have taken it completely off, except it was her father's last gift to her, and like her mother's pearl earring, she refused to let it off of her person.

She carefully added another ingredient to the potion and smiled as it changed colors to a darker royal blue, exactly as it was supposed to...

"First Generations are considered pureblood, which is why they attended the Washington D.C banquet, and true, it was utterly disgraceful. Some fool dumped a glass of water on a Netlings new gown." TJ's mouth twitched briefly. The complete outrage of the man's poor conduct had almost caused him to break social rule number one twenty-seven, never to laugh at a person expense.

He raised his eyebrows briefly as the ring was turned over. He could only imagine what had happened between the beginning of potions and this moment to turn, the previously appalling girl, into one was decently respectful of the lines between Purebloods and all others.

Putting the last ingredients into the potion, he stood up, efficiently getting a bottle of the relaxer, and capping it.

"I had a marvelous time. Do remember next time that the Banquet is open to all, but to avoid contamination from ones of lower status, feel free to sit with my family this coming break."

He walked away, putting the potion on the table, fully realizing the honor that he had just bestowed on the girl was also double sided. One social mistake in front of the O'Riley's and the persons future was done, however, behaiving well would leave the person with the best praise his parents would give.

'Do come back. Our door is always open to you.'

And so, indeed was their friendship. \n\n

Excellent by Elizabeth

She smiled with the corners of her mouth, letting her blue eyes do the real smiling by sparkling beautifully in the dim dungeon lighting. Elizabeth knew she'd done it, sucessfully re-broke back into her real life, the one she'd tried to neglect by associating herself with mudbloods. She had changed a lot since she slapped TJ at their first meeting, but slapping him was something she really regreted doing.

All in all, though, he seemed to be either ignoring it or formulating a plan to get back at her. And considering the latter seemed utterly absurd to Elizabeth, she watched him turn in their potion to the front, thinking slyly to herself about his invitation.

She would most certainly take him up on the offer at the next banquet.

"I'll see you later then, perhaps sooner than the DC Banquet." she said as she brushed past him with her books already slung over her shoulder, exiting the dungeons out into the light of the upper corridors. \n\n
