It was the first case study day. Alfie’s work with the various sixth and seventh years who had chosen to continue their Defense Against the Dark Arts studies had been leading up to this. Over the past months, Alfie had given the students working knowledge of many different curses and jinxes that a dark witch or wizard might use, he had taught them about a variety of ways to deal with dark creatures that he was not sure Tallec—or his friend’s replacement, would even dream of introducing to the students, and he had set them up to defend themselves by hosting duelling practises twice a month instead of classes. They had completed many hands on classes and so Alfie thought they could use a little bit of fun.
The seventh years would have already participated in a similar exercise the previous year and so Alfie was relying on them to lead by example for the sixth years. “This year, owing to the small class size, I only have two cases for you to divide yourselves into groups and work on,” he said once the students were assembled in the classroom. “Both folders have a variety of news clips and witness statements. Your job is to identify the guilty party and what spell and/or potion was used to accomplish the crime. The first one involves two mistresses, a wife and an…erm broken wand,” he placed the first folder down on the table and raised the second one. “This one is a infanticide—on two accounts, though it is also suspected that a third child was tortured into insanity.”
“All three of these are either cold cases,” Alfie continued as came around his desk to hand out the folders to those who wanted them. “I don’t expect you to find the true guilty party, just to give me rather solid reasoning for why you chose who you chose or, if you choose to keep it a cold case, I need reason and evidence to support that.”
Coming up with these cases were always the hardest that Alfie worked each year. Sometimes he would put together old ones, usually low profile cases, from years before the students would have been alive, spending days in the library going through old archives and sometimes even ordering things from the catalogue. Other times he would craft the cases himself, putting together fake news clips and calling in a favour from an amateur photographer to help him create the pictures for the news clips. He would be lying to himself if he said he didn’t know why he enjoyed all of this so much. The truth was that he felt as though he were running his own department, the students were the agents and he the Cecily Rigsby.
Difference was, he didn’t plan on crushing the hopes and dreams of any of his students with the aid of their parents.
OOC: Regular posting rules apply, although I will allow for liberty to be taken with the cases. You can elaborate on any part of the case you want. If you have any questions, catch me in chatzy. Hope you have fun!
Case #1: Marcel Donos was a well established & powerful business wizard with a penchant of hopping beds. He was found in a dark alleyway by a couple of Muggles who appeared to be under the Imperius Curse and then had to be obliviated because both of his wands were broken. After his death it was discovered that in addition to his wife, Celine, he kept two regular mistresses, Amelia and Petra. Each witch had skin tight alibis for the day of his disappearance and subsequent death. Celine had contact with Amelia before Marcel’s death, it appears, but it is unknown if the women knew of each other’s roles in Donos’ life or Petra. The evidence was later found to have been tampered with, security spells placing all three witches at the scene of the crime. Witness statements include: various neighbours, the two Muggles, the wizard who found the two Muggles, the Obliviators, the three witches, and several of Donos’ colleagues who had been the last to see him at a popular, yet seedy, bar.
Case #2: Marcel Donos is a well established & powerful business wizard with three children who have all wound up to some unfortunate end. The first child, Celine, was found dead—death by an untraceable poison in her system. The second child, Amelia, is in an insane asylum and has been for a long time after what seems to have been several years of psychological and magical torture—Amelia was unable to explain what had happened to her at the instance of her check in and it was Marcel himself who brought her in saying he had noticed a deterioration in her mental state since Celine was found but thought it to do with grief and didn’t realise there might have been something wrong on a deeper level. The last child, Petra, aged 4, disappeared one day and turned up in a coffin in the family burial grounds. The family claimed that Petra had drowned in a pond near the family estate and to save the pain of a public burial the family simply held a quiet ceremony. Petra’s mother later hung herself from grief. Donos was brought in for questioning several times but after several witness statements corroborated his whereabouts he was allowed to leave, innocent.
