Just Hanging Around [Years VI-VII] by Prof. Isis Carter

Her first day at her first real job. Yeah, Isis was a bit nervous. As the sixth- and seventh-year Defense students trickled in, she couldn’t help but wondering idly what they thought of her. She didn’t know much at all about their prior substitute, but she ambitiously hoped to improve upon the experience these students were receiving.

She waited until it seemed everyone who was coming had arrived, providing about five minutes leeway. “Hello, class,” she smiled. “My name is Isis Carter, and I’ll be your permanent substitute until a Defense professor is found. You can call me Isis if you feel so inclined; otherwise, Professor Carter is fine.” It was a luxury of familiarity she would be giving only to the Advanced class; many of them were, by now, legal adults, not to mention the fact that she didn’t feel old or stuffy enough to mandate the Professor thing. Isis herself was only twenty-four, with memories of her sixteenth and seventeenth birthdays still somewhat fresh, whereas her thirteenth or eleventh felt much more distant.

“Hopefully by now, you’ve all had some experience with the spell Levicorpus,” she began, the incantation scribbling into being on the board beneath her name, which had appeared previously. Her posture suggested confidence, although behind her back, she tugged her sleeves nervously down farther over dark brown skin, as if that somehow could either comfort her or hide her entirely. “Just in case you haven’t: Levicorpus is the jinx used to suspend someone in the air. In other words, it’s like Wingardium Leviosa for people.”

“For today’s class, I’d like you to pair up and practice on one another,” Isis elaborated. “When you’ve got a good feel for it, we’re going to try to switch to casting nonverbally. Levicorpus at its best is a nonverbal spell.” She paused momentarily. “Take as long as you need to practice before switching to nonverbal. And remember that your wonderful partner will be suspended by their ankles, which means they may have a lot of blood rushing to their head, so try not to keep them up there too long. The counter-jinx is Liberacorpus.”

She ran a hand over buzzed-short hair. “I suppose that’s it, then,” she concluded. “Go ahead and get going. I’ll be around watching your progress, so if you need me for any reason, just let me know.”

OOC: I think we all know the rules by now. Long, creative posts will receive optimal points. Feel free to tag Isis if you need anything. Have fun, and happy posting!
