Lesson II: Fifth Years by Professor O'Leary

When the students entered the room, the first thing they might notice were that the desks had been moved out of the way. This was nothing really new as they often had application lessons since Drake felt it was important that they knew more than just theory of a spell since being able to recite something like the three unforgiveables wasn’t really going to help a person escape from one. On the note of escape, it would be the center of today’s lesson, which also required more trust in a partner than previous lessons. However, now that they were nearing adulthood, he felt that this could be handled.

The next thing that might be noticed that where the desks normally resided there were blue mats much like those that had attended muggle elementary school might have seen in gym class. They had been laid down for safety purposes over the hard concrete floor. While broken bones were always a possibility in his class, he had every intention of ensuring that their skulls remained perfectly intact. At least, on his watch. After that, he really couldn’t do anything short of putting them all in rubber rooms, which had been a serious consideration when Briony had started walking.

Now, of course, he wanted to put her in one after telling him her thoughts on future career plans, though, he had to blame himself partially. He had been the one to instill defensive measures into her. It was a bit hypocritical, because if it were any other student, not his daughter, he would have been more than pleased that they wanted to study dark creatures and protective measures against them, but this was his daughter. It was a completely different matter. With his other students, he prepared them for the world, but then it was up to them. Briony was his responsibility until his last breath.

Although to prepare the students, it actually required a lesson being taught. “Today, you will be learning Levicorpus and Liberacorpus,” he stated. He hadn’t bothered to tell them to get their wands. By this point in their education, especially halfway through their fifth year, they should know better. “The Levicorpus spell when performed properly will dangle a person upside down by their ankle. This is useful for those who want to be Aurors, or a similar field, because it can be used to aide in protection or to capture a criminal. For the everyday person, while it is advised to let authorities handle situations, it does provide you with a means of protection in an unforeseen circumstance.”

Drake left it at that as his goal was not to actually scare the students to the point where they would obsess over such things, but merely that there was a point to learning the spells. “The counter spell is Liberacorpus, which is especially useful if you’ve had Levicorpus cast on you. Now, to demonstrate, we have Dave,” Drake said gesturing to the dummy nearby. “To perform, Levicorpus, move your wand like so,” he moved his wand in the hook line gesture, “Levicorpus.” Dave was up in the air, dangling like a fish on a hook in seconds. “To release, perform the movement in the opposite direction while saying Liberacorpus.”

With that, he allowed Dave to fall to the concrete floor to where a piece broke off. “And that is an example of what happens if you don’t work over the mats. All right, that said, everyone partner up into groups of two. There are pillows over in the corner for anyone who wants extra cushioning. I want you to take turns practicing Levicorpus on each other. For the person that has a successful Levicorpus cast on them, I want you to practice Liberacorpus on yourself. If you start to experience any dizziness or cannot get out of the Levicorpus spell, have your partner come get me and I will release you. Begin.”

OOC: Remember that posts should be at least ten sentences or two paragraphs (approximately 200 words) long. Points will be awarded based on length, grammar, creativity, etc. Have fun!

No good can come of this by Elly Eriksson

When entering the DADA classroom, Elly felt the urge to cartwheel across the room. She would break her neck if she tried, so managed to restrain herself, but she did grin and wink at Meredith. Gymnastics was her thing.

Walking round the outskirts of the room to find a suitable place to stand, Elly began thinking about what their lesson could entail, considering the floor mats, and she decided she probably didn't want to know. She had a suspicion she would have bruises by the end of the day, and she was no good at divination. Luckily she still had some of that bruise salve from Medic Wolfe from the end of the previous year.

Anyway, she still had to find out what the class was about. True to form, Professor O'Leary wasted no time in telling them. As she had predicted, Elly envisaged leaving the class with bruises. Her own partner would be far luckier, because although she had improved a great deal since first year, it was very rare that Elly managed to pick up a spell in just one lesson. But anyway, this was a really cool spell to be learning. Elly's respect of O'Leary increased just because he was teaching it to them. It might be because she was friends with Briony, or it might be because Elly was older, but O'Leary didn't seem half so scary these days.

Soon the lecture was over and it was time for class to begin. As always, they had to pick partners. Elly just looked at her nearest classmate and said, "Work with me. I have bruise salve." Then she grinned.

Except cartwheels :P by Eavan Valentine

The book in front of Eavan's face had disguised the view of the classroom, so it was only when Eavan suddenly sunk into the soft mats and almost lost her balance that she noticed the difference in the room. She grinned as she dogeared her page and slipped it into her bag, which was dropped off with all the rest in the corner.

Eavan took her place on the side of the room and listened to the spell, her grin getting wider. She was about even with theoretical and practical stuff, but most of the professors had been cramming essays down their throats so often that it would be a nice change of pace to just do wand work. And this one sounds fun. Maybe do it on the twins when they being particularly annoying.

"Work with me. I have bruise salve."

Eavan looked over at Elly. She hadn't even noticed the girl standing there. She also hadn't thought of the fact that, yeah, there would probably be a lot of bruising during this class.

"You don't have to bribe me to work with you," Eavan said, with a smile. She had long since felt better about Elly and her gang as they had gotten older. Popular was such an arbitrary term. "Though the bruise salve sounds good. Do you care who goes first?"

I can't cartwheel :( by Elly

"You don't have to bribe me to work with you," Eavan said, and Elly laughed.

"I'm glad," she replied. "I can't say it wouldn't hurt if I did have to use bribes." She was mostly joking, but on some level she would be upset if Eavan didn't want to work with her; Elly liked her yearmate and thought they'd gotten on rather well over the past couple of years.

"Nope, don't care who goes first," Elly answered, "but I am going to do this first." Elly took her uniform robe off, leaving her in faded jeans and a white tee with a rainbow motif. Casting her robe aside, Elly also took a moment to tie back her hair with the elastic normally around her wrist. She didn't care if she was wearing jeans underneath - having your robe over your head when you were hanging upside down didn't sound like a barrel of laughs.

"Okay, I'm ready," she told Eavan with a smile. "Tell you what, you try first, because chances of me actually managing the spell are fairly slim." This didn't bother her anymore, and Elly was happy to admit she was a slow learner. "So try not to drop me, okay?"

Perhaps sommersaults are more our speed by Eavan

Eavan copied Elly in removing her robes. They were wearing similar outfits, with Eavan in faded jeans and an old Angeles Ashwinders t-shirt. Even though she had starting wearing things like jewelery and skirts for a while now, wearing any of those in Defense was ridiculous. Evan internally winced at what would happen if she had worn a skirt to today's lesson.

"Okay. I'll do my my best to not send you to the Hospital Wing," Eavan smirked. "Ready or not," Eavan added with a deep breath as she held out her wand. A quick hook-like swish and a "Levicorpus!" later Elly was swinging by her ankle from an invisible string. Eavan let out a shriek of delight at the swinging Elly.

"I did it! On the first try! Hey, are you okay?" Eavan said, realizing that Elly was hanging upside and that was bound to be uncomfortable. "Now you gotta get yourself down."

You might be right by Elly

It was most peculiar; one moment Elly was standing in the DADA classroom, watching Eavan prepare for a spell, and the next moment she was hanging upside down by her ankle! She emitted a short squeak of surprise as the world was whipped from beneath her feet. Then she couldn't help but laugh at Eavan's delighted exclamation.

"I'm fine," Elly said, sending an upside down grin Eavan's way. "Disoriented, but fine," she laughed. Her hair was effectively on end and the locket Echo had given her was hanging down in front of her face, threatening to fall off, but other than that everything was hunky dory.

"Get myself down?" Elly repeated. Ah yes, she had forgotten this part. "Good grief, I'm going to be here all day." Elly raised her wand and discovered her first problem. "How do I do the wand movement?" She asked Eavan. "So it's the right way up to you, or the right way up to me?" Elly laughed - that was one of the most absurd questions she'd ever had to ask.

"Okay, so is this right?" She waved her wand without the incantation in what she hoped was the right direction, and awaited Eavan's guidance.
