Is your daughter here, Professor O'Leary? by Saul Pierce

It was a Saturday and Saul had finally made his decision. It had been a difficult one, but Echo had been in Briony's cheering section since the beginning and the recent discussion with Matt the day before had made it clear that maybe Echo had had a point the whole time. Unfortunately, having made a decision still meant he needed to ask, and this was proving more difficult that initially anticipated. Asking wasn't the problem. Finding the girl was.

He'd tried the Cascade Hall, but he'd overslept and missed the bulk of the breakfast eaters. He could wait for lunch, he supposed, but whatever else his faults were, procrastination wasn't one of them. He had decided to ask Briony to the dance and he was going to do that.

She wasn't in the Gardens, and she obviously wasn't in Pecari Commons. He'd even looked in the library, but he kept getting dirty looks even though he was whispering as he called Briony's name. She might be in the Teppenpaw Commons, but Saul had one more place to look first. He'd found her in her father's office before.

So here he was. He took a deep breath and straightened his clothes (on the occasion of asking a girl out for the very first time in his life, he'd thought he'd dress up for it - he'd even brushed his hair and tried shaving, never mind that he didn't really have anything to shave quite yet). This was not a problem most boys looking for dates to the ball were facing. They just had to ask the girl. Saul had to face the dad. He ran his fingers over his hair to double check that it didn't have any twigs from the Garden in it. Then he knocked and called through the door, "Professor O'Leary? This is Saul Pierce. Is Briony there?"

Briony (with a bit of Drake)

Yes, I am :P by Briony (with a bit of Drake)

The brilliant thing about having your father for a professor was that when homework help was needed, he was right there to help, such as with Charms homework. She didn’t quite understand how the charm that she was supposed to be writing an essay on worked, which made the actual homework assignment rather difficult to accomplish. Briony was just listening to her dad explain it again when a familiar voice was heard and though to confirm it, Saul said it was him.

Surprise fleeted across Briony’s features. It was a bit odd for Saul to be seeking her out, even though they were friends. He belonged to a rather large group that always seemed to be up to something or another while she gravitated towards loner status. She supposed that was mostly due to the fact that while she wasn’t shy, she wasn’t outgoing either.

She was a bit reserved, but that may have been because of how she had been raised. Her dad was always worried about some hidden dark magic or deed. It was always something or another. It was part of the reason that until recently they hadn’t had an actual home. He finally seemed to be relaxing a bit. Calling out, Drake said, “Come on in, Mr. Pierce.”

Briony put her books down on the floor, which caused a bit of her dark red hair to fall forward. Sitting back up in the chair, she tucked back the piece of hair, before her blue eyes focused on Saul with a smile. “Hey, Saul. What’s up?”

Excellent (wotw) by Saul Pierce

Saul took a breath and pushed open the door when Professor O'Leary invited him in. But it was Briony's voice that, unexpectedly, made him the tiniest bit nervous. Normally Saul had the utmost self-confidence in himself, but now that the moment was upon him, he suddenly had the worrying thought: what if she said no?

Fortunately, he'd learned how to deal with stage fright at a very early age and this was just a new and unfamiliar form of it. He pushed it aside and grinned brightly at his very pretty friend as he stepped inside and closed the door behind him. Then he looked upwards and began with a joke, because she'd left it wide open and he couldn't help himself. "Looks like the ceiling's still up," he told her.

Then he took a deep breath and decided that putting it off any longer wasn't going to make it any easier. "So, Briony, do you want to go to the dance with me?" So concerned was Saul with her possible answer that he failed to notice that the DADA Professor was still in the room, and the man wasn't even doing his skulking in the shadows thing.\r\n\r\n

Very excellent by Briony (with even less Drake)

There was nothing like going from smiling at a joke to red as a tomato in five seconds flat. She would have been ecstatic over the guy she liked asking her to the dance if it weren’t for the fact that her father was sitting right at his desk. Her gaze shifted to him and she widened her eyes and gave a slight nod of the head that said ‘Go away.’

The look was caught and Drake cleared his throat while standing up. “Excuse me…I have…some preparations to make in the classroom,” he said. It wasn’t the best reasoning, but he also knew that Briony would lecture him about being a teenage female if he didn’t leave at her asking. Though, as a father, he would have preferred to stay and scare off the boy, but as a professor, he knew that Saul wasn’t some bad boy that would get his daughter into trouble, so if she had to go to the dance with someone, it was the better option.

As Drake left the room, Briony got up out of her seat since it seemed like the right thing to do. Her gaze was on the floor for a moment, wishing the pink of her face and the butterflies in her stomach would go away. Looking up at Saul, she grinned, “Yes, I’d like to go with you.” Still nervous, she toyed with her hair slightly. “So…um…” She wasn’t quite sure what to say now since she had never been asked out on a date before. Should she attempt a joke? Perhaps, ask if the fire-breathing chicken is going with the princess? Actually, that would be an amusing story to write about…

Way cool by Saul Pierce

Saul jolted slightly as Briony looked toward the desk and he realized that Professor O'Leary was still right there. His nervousness abruptly doubled. Fortunately though, the professor just made his excuses and left the room, though Saul thought for a moment that he was going to say something about turning Saul into a toad and then releasing him into the desert if . . . whatever it was fathers had against their daughters dating happened. But that could have just been projection.

Then he was gone and it was just Saul and Briony and he'd asked her out. She stood up and looked at the floor, and Saul's worry that she might say no increased. It was on the tip of his tongue to try to diffuse the situation and salvage their friendship at least when she looked up and grinned. Saul grinned back, because that was definitely not a 'no, I don't like you like that' grin.

Then she actually did say yes, and Saul couldn't stop himself from whooping with delight. "Great!"

And then the awkwardness hit. They were going to have a date. That was fantastic! But it did leave them at some loose ends on the question of what did they do now? Fortunately, inspiration struck before it could last too long, and Saul asked, "Hey, do you want to go on a walk in the gardens with me? It's really nice out today." His eye happened to catch on the bookbag beside her chair and the open books on the desk, "Or were you, um, busy doing something?" It looked like homework, but who did their homework on a Saturday morning? It was probably some special project for her dad . . .

Like ice? by Briony

OOC: So sorry that it took forever to reply. Life is just hectic.

BIC:

Briony’s eyes shifted to where he was looking at her books. She had been working on homework. She bit her lower lip. Saul or homework? Homework or Saul? Well, there really was no contest. Her homework wasn’t due yet and she could get her father’s help tomorrow. Plus, it was a nice Saturday afternoon and she really did need to get out of the building more.

“No, a walk sounds like fun,” she replied, looking back at him. “Just let me put this stuff away.” She moved over to where everything was. She tucked the papers that she had been working on into her spot in the book, so she wouldn’t lose her place, and then shoved everything into her bag. She was normally fairly organized, but she would rather enjoy the day with Saul.

Besides, it would have been hard to concentrate on the assignment now that she had a million questions running through her mind and not for the first time wished she could have talked to her mother. What kind of dress should she wear? The color? What about her hair or makeup? She also didn’t have a lot of close girl friends that she could ask. She supposed she could ask Elly, but she really didn’t seem like one of those girly types. Maybe she could ask one of the prefects? It would be awkward, but it would be worse to look horrible at the dance.
