As Alexander walked into the classroom, he noticed that everybody was already seated at their desks, except for a few unoccupied desks. Shrugging, Alexander proceeded to settling down at his table. After straightening out his table, Alexander stood up, walked to the center of the classroom and started the class.
"Good afternoon, class. Today, we will be learning two basic spells for self defense, and ONLY self defense. The two spells are," he walked towards the chalkboard and started writing, "Expelliarmus and Protego." He wrote the two incantations on the board as he spoke.
Expelliarmus Disarming Charm
Protego Shield Charm
"As some of you might already know," Alexander turned to grin at a certain student by the name of Tally, "The Shield Charm is a protective force field that protects the caster from any physical or magical attacks, but there are certain exceptions to the this. The force field only protects the caster for one hit, meaning the force of a few Flipendos will make it disappear.
Now, let's move on to the Disarming Charm. Say you were chased down a corridor by a maniac holding a knife. If you were to cast the Disarming Charm correctly and with a good aim, you should be able to knock the knife clear off the maniac's hands. If the charm hits a human, it will cause the victim to be knocked off his feet and fall onto the floor."
Walking back to his desk, Alexander continued talking. "For a demonstration of how to cast the two spells correctly, flip to pages 15 and 16 of your textbook and watch the moving diagrams.
You will practice the two spells by pairing up with another student and using the spells that you have learnt so far to duel.If any spell cast is meant to inflict serious harm to another person, I will personally make sure the caster gets a whole week of detention. You may begin."
OOC: OK, here's your second lesson. pair up and practice the spells after viewing the diagrams cast the spell in your textbooks. Remember that you are first years, the spells should be challenging to perform. Please, no Mary Sueism please!\n\n

0Prof. ZephyrflameLesson Two: More Basic Spells0Prof. Zephyrflame15
Mia somehow ended up in a seat with no one next to her and at the end of the row. She leaned back in her chair a bit and messed around with her ponytail while Professor Zephyrflame explained what the second lesson would be.
Mia smiled as she wondered when she would end up being chased down a corridor by a maniac with a knife. As the professor finished explaining the second lesson, Mia opened her bag and got out her book. She opened to page 15 and 16 to see the demo of the spells the class would be learning.
'Awesome!' Mia thought to herself 'More moving pictures!'
Mia watched each demos carefully as she twirled her wand through her dainty fingers quickly and gracefully. Mia watched as the people in the demonstrations performed the spells perfectly and got the desired effect. She swore she'd get these right without the drama from the previous lesson. She had heard many remarks about her stupid dummy and it had peeved her off a bit.
"That won't happen again, especially since there are no dummies now." Mia declared with a small laugh and moved her book aside.
She looked about to see if someone else was ready to partner up. Mia was ready to get started and do it right!
Jenna listened to the professor and read the book almost without any interest. After the last lesson's "wonderful" performance, where she learned that for some reason spells were not effective if she said them in her normal voice, she wasn't too enthusiastic about today. But again she pushed herself, saying that if she wanted to get away from her family, she better know how to protect herself from them if they wanted reparation. It was what her disowned Aunt Elaina had done, mastered Defense Against the Dark Arts before leaving the family.
Pulling herself out of thoughts of the past, she turned to look for a partner. She saw Mia, who she hadn't really spoken in with since the beginning of the term.
"Hi, do you want to be partners with me for the spells?" asked Jenna hopefully.\n\n
Tally, who was sitting in the middle row, blushed slightly as the professor grinned at her. She used the shield charm perfectly when she was using the flipendo curse against Jake. The fact that she had actually done it still surprised her. But her father was a great teacher and so she shouldn't have been so surprised.
Today they would learn a charm she had already done, okay, not so bad. But they would also be learning the expelliarmus charm, which Tally had never used before. She was a chaser, so aim shouldn't come hard for her, but the idea of knocking someone down without meaning too, worried her a little.
Slowly, she turned to page 15 and watched the diagrams demostrate the charms for a few minutes, before looking up and around the classroom for a partner, silently praying that someone would want to work with her.\n\n
Mia turned after hearing a voice she knew was familiar. Jenna, the girl she met at the beginning of term, had asked to partner up. Mia hadn't spoken much to Jenna since they met so she was all for partnering with her.
"Of course, Jenna." Mia said with a bright smile "Wow, I haven't heard from you in a while. I mean, I've seen you class and stuff but I suppose we just drifted off somewhere before we could talk."
Mia shrugged and smiled again. Mia twirled her wand through her right hand fingers again. She stood up to face Jenna and asked,
"So, you ready to do this? Which spell, and who goes first?"\n\n
"Yup, it's a shame we haven't talked in a while," nodded Jenna, "Well, to tell you the truth, I'm not so good at Defense Against the Dark Arts. Maybe you should go first. You can pick which spell, if you like."
Jenna took a step back, then asked, "Wait, for the spells, I have to shoot a spell at you for you to block me with or disarm me with, right?" Jenna bit her lip, she wasn't very good with spells at all.\n\n
"Hey I'm not too good at just about anything, yet." Mia said with a laugh. She may not be good yet but she'd be great at everything. She told her self she would.
Mia stopped and thought about the question Jenna asked. She brought her finger to her lips in concentration.
"Well, for disarming I think I just have to disarm you and you don't shoot a spell at me. For protecting though, you send a spell at me and I protect myself from it. At least I'm pretty sure that's what we do." Mia said uncertainly.
"Well, why don't we start with disarming. All I need to do is knock your wand from your hand." Mia offered.
Mia raised her wand and pointed it at Jenna's hand. She thought she had pretty good aim, it's the actual disarming that she wasn't sure she could do. Mia took a deep breath and took aim.
"Expelliarmus!" Mia chanted. The spell hit it's target like she planned but nothing happened. Mia frowned in annoyance and then reasoned with herself. That always happens first time. Nothing works for any first year on the first try. Well, unless they are really gifted and Mia was still new. She took aim and tried again.
"Expelliarmus!" Mia spoke again. Once again her target was hit and it seemed to shake a bit this time. Mia raised an eyebrow at her wand and turned back to Jenna to try again.
The third time was no different from the second time. Mia sighed. She decided to let Jenna take a turn because she was starting to get frustrated and rememebering what Professor Bulla said, she shouldn't let her emotions fuel her spells or bad things would happen.
"Why don't you take a shot at it, Jenna?" Mia suggested "If I keep going, I'll probably blow up the classroom." Mia said as she rolled her eyes and laughed.\n\n
Jenna gave a short laugh in response, "Well, I've got to warn you, I'll probably end up putting a dent in the wall-again," her eyes drifted off to the dent she had created last lesson, when she had gotten a little angry while performing the spell.
She took in a deep breath and tried to relax. Raising her wand, in her normal voice she said "Expelliarmus!" The wand seemed to vibrate- or maybe that was a trick of the light.
Frustrated, she confided in Mia, "I know it sounds really weird, but when I try to mimic my mother's voice when saying an incantation it always works. I'm going to try doing that, and that is why my voice is going to sound really mature and snobbish in a minute." So clearing her throat she tried again, "Expelliarmus!" That was very bad.
Well, the spell did work. The problem? Jenna's aim had been a little too far to the left- causing the window behind Mia to shatter.
"Look out!" she warned Mia, eyes wide, she ran over to her friend and pushed her out of the way. \n\n
Mia was caught completely off guard when Jenna pushed her aside. Mia landed on her arm roughly and heard a shattering. She didn't feel that much pain so she knew it wasn't her arm that shattered. She quickly sat up and looked at what did.
The window behind where Mia was standing was in shards. Mia quickly looked back and forth between Jenna on the floor and the window. She wondered whether shattering windows was going to become a usual thing for every class.
Mia laughed a little and rubbed her left arm. She winced a bit and knew she would end up with a nasty bruise there. She couldn't see it now because her sleeve was covering her upper arm where she landed.
Mia picked her self up and hurried over to Jenna. She held out her hand to help her friend up.
"Don't worry about that. At least nothing went through the window this time. Maybe I should take another stab at it." Mia said with a comforting smile.\n\n
Jenna nodded weakly at Mia, "That would probably be a good idea. Are you sure your okay though? There's a lot of broken glass around." Jenna herself had a small cut on her arm, but it was very minor and she didn't really care about it.
Preparing for the spell, she held her wand out as if she was going to shoot out a spell at Mia, "i'm ready when you are."\n\n
Mia double checked herself after Jenna's comment on the broken glass. She searched her robes but didn't see anything and didn't feel any other pain.
"No I'm alright. I'm just going to have a nasty bruise on my left arm." Mia said with her bright smile.
Mia nodded and picked up her own wand from a little farther away off the floor. She took a new position away from the broken window but moved just enough so Jenna didn't have to. She raised her wand and aimed it back at Jenna's wand hand. Mia took another deep breath and fired her spell.
"Expelliarmus!" Mia said clearly. The spell hit a little higher than intended but still hit the wand in Jenna's hand. It didn't go flying like in the demo from the book but the wand was definitely on the ground and not in Jenna's hand.
"Awesome!" Mia exclaimed as she tossed her wand in the air and caught it. Mia was really proud of herself even if this was supposed to be a simple spell. But, she wasn't going to go around showing exactly how excited she was by saying something like,
'Hey, look at me! I can do it! I can do it!' like a hyperactive puppy.
She settled for being subtly sarcastic.
"Well this is just great. Now I can defend myself against a maniac chasing me down a corridor with a knife!" Mia said with mock excitement and laughed.\n\n
Jenna laughed and added with the a hint of sarcasm, "Hey, with all the lunatics there are running around here- like this one ghost I met, it probably is a pretty good thing to know. Anyway, onto Protego, so that if we can't disarm the maniac chasing us with the knife, we can always block him!" then she added, "You can go first, I'm still sort of recovering from my disarming mishap."
With her robe she gave her wand a quick polish, just to be sure there were not anymore shards of glass on it. Satisfied, she decided to use the knock over spell. Hey, there wasn't much of a choice anyway, either that, or shoot water at her with water charm they had learned earlier in the year.
"Ready?" she asked, but did not wait for a reply, "On the count of three then: one, two, three- Flipendo."\n\n
Mia wasn't completely ready when Jenna shot the spell at her. Mia quickly whipped her wand in the ready position and began the spell.
"Prote-" Mia was cut off as she was thrown backwards off her feet. Mia landed a few feet back and winced slightly. Mia shook off the dizziness she got and quickly got back to her feet as she giggled slightly. She wasn't mad at all. She thought it was kind of funny but wasn't going to let this go.
"Two can play that game." Mia said more to herself.
Mia smirked and threw the spell back at Jenna with out even asking if she was ready.
"Flippendo Jenna!" Mia chanted and the spell shot from the tip of her wand in Jenna's direction. \n\n
Jenna saw the spell coming, and began to point her wand at the spell to block it. She stopped when she figured that there was no use. She would probably screw up the spell and then the two would combust or something and cause an explosion. Weighing the consequences out, she figured she would probably be better off letting it hit her. And that was a lot of thinking in a little time, on her part.
The spell hit her in the stomach, sending her straight on to her back. She thought she must have looked quite humorous, falling down like that, and smiled at Mia when although her whole back was a bit sore. Jenna got up, "That would have been really funny if it didn't hurt," she paused to think, deciding it was funny anyway and giggled, "scratch that, it was still pretty funny." \n\n
Mia smiled knowing that Jenna took it as a joke. Mia didn't like people with no sense of humor. She hadn't met any of those people yet and thanked the stars for it. Well, that was fun and all but Mia was ready to do it for real now and get it right.
"Okay, now that we're both ready, let's do it for real." Mia said and brandished her wand again. She held it in the ready position and waited for Jenna's spell. Her bright hazel eyes were twinkling with determination from behind her small glasses. Mia brushed her ponytail back and looked Jenna in the eye.
Stephen had paid a great deal of attention to what the Professor had said to the class. After all, who wouldn't want to be able to disarm any maniacs who happened to be strolling the halls of the school. It seemed a rather good idea to him. And you never know, it might also come in handy with other things. Like jousting the twins.
He snickered as he imagined the surprised look on Sorrel's face if he were to be facing her across the pitch as her 'lance' - or whatever it was they would be using - was magically taken from her grip. Pumped and ready for action, he looked around for a likely opponent... er... partner.
After a moment, he sidled over to a girl (hardly surprising considering that there were so many of those here) and plonked down in the seat next to her. Peering over at her side of the desk, he had a good long look at the diagrams in her open textbook.
"So..." he said at long last. "Are we going to give it a go, or are you going to just sit there all day. You shouldn't, you know. This looks like it could be a blast. And you know," he summed up with a cheeky grin, "you get to be my partner today."\n\n
Tally glanced up from the book and stared straight into the eyes of...a boy. A new boy. A boy she had yet to meet. Not that I've met a lot, well, really only three... Tally thought with a roll of her eyes.
She looked him over with a quick flick of her green eyes before making eye contact with him once more. The last time she worked with a boy, Jake, she had done well against him. This kid seemed pretty excited about the whole deal maybe, he too, will make a good partner.
Finally smiling to the body, Tally closed and turned her full attention to him,
"And I suppose being your partner is somewhat of an honor then?" She asked with the quirk of her eyebrow. She stood from her seat and started to move away from the desks before turning and facing the boy, "I'm Tally Adams, by the way. And this should be fun. We wouldn't want to be stuck in such a predicament as a maniac running loose in the school wielding a knife and have no way of getting out of it." She commented with an amused smile.
Jenna nodded back at Mia, wand at the ready. 'Focus on actually sending it where it is actually supposed to go' she noted mentally. 'Oh, you're nice' she thought back sarcastically. Crud, she would really have to work on this talking to herself habit thing of hers she got when she tried to focus on something; it was getting annoying.
"Alright then," she said allowed, "Flipendo!" Jenna was proud to see that it was a pretty decent spell, and it had been casted in the right direction. All there was to do now was hope Mia would block it, and hope that even more if Mia did, that Jenna would be able to block it away from coming back at her. She already had destructed more than enough for one lesson.\n\n
why? everyone knows that I make things cool!
by Stephen
Stephen was forced momentarily to wonder why this girl had rolled her eyes at him. OK, so it had happened before, but usually it was when he was at his silliest. Surely he hadn't been that silly just then.
But really, he decided seconds later, when she got down to business and started talking to him.
"Of course!" he replied. "Ask anyone - Sorrel or Liz or Jen or Zack or... anyone. And yeah... bit of a weird thing to say though. Do you suppose we should be expecting a knife carrying maniac to show up sometime soon? Maybe" he added dramatically, lowering his voice to an expressive whisper, leaning closer and pointing emphatically at the door, "he's out there right now, just waiting for the class to end. We should go check - test out these spells that the prof was on about."
Excited by his own suggestion, he jumped to his feet and started trying to tug Tally up too.\n\n

Mia concentrated on the spell she was to perform. Her wand was at the ready when Jenna shot the knockback jinx at her. Mia pointed her wand at the spell headed her way.
"Protego!" Mia exclaimed. She was half concentrating and half praying her spell would work since she didn't want to be knocked down again. But once again, Mia had no such luck.
Mia's protection spell seemed to have no effect and Mia was hit in the stomach. She flew back again but luckily not on her bad arm. She shook her head and quickly stood back up. Mia made her way back to Jenna and held her wand back in the ready position.
"Okay, that was only my first try." Mia reasurred herself.
"I'll get it next time. Really! By the way, nice spell work." Mia said to Jenna. Mia smiled brightly and laughed a bit.
Jenna didn't seem too confident in her abilities with spells but to Mia she seemed to do just fine. Her aim was just a bit off. Nothing a little practice couldn't fix. Then again, Jenna could screw up terribly and Mia would still think it's cool. She may have been here for a while now but this magic would never cease to amaze her. She really wanted to do it right. It's just a thing Mia had.
Mia looked down and took a deep breath before looking back at Jenna with a grin of confidence.
Tally didn't resist him as he pulled her up along side him. The kid amused her. He had a lot of energy and what she assumed was his sense of humor.
"I'd doubt he'd be waiting at the door, too many of us to handle. He'd probably hide somewhere and wait for the perfect opportunity." She paused for a moment, "Besides, why be afraid of someone carrying a knife when I'm the one with the wand?" She flicked hers up to her face as if she was dueling, "I know how to do a mean knockback jinx to slow him down. And when he's down, I'll splash him with some water!" She said the last part as if it were the worst sort of punishment a person could ever have. Lowering her wand once again with a large smile that shown in her green eyes, Tally said,
"Now, if I plan on hunting a crazed lunatic with a knife with anyone, I at least deserve to know his name."\n\n
Stephen nodded along as she Tally told him exactly what she would do to any knife-wielding assailant and laughed at her tone as she got to the threat of water.
"Yeah, you could rust up his knife - he wouldn't like that."
His grin faltered for a second when she made a pointed remark about not knowing his name before it returned bigger than ever.
"Oh yeah, sorry. I'm Stephen. But now," he pulled her closer to the door and put a finger over his lips. "We gotta be quiet," he said in a stage whisper as he released his grip on Tally and pulled out his wand. "Because he might be behind the door. I'm gonna check. Three, two, one."
With his free hand, Stephen flung open the door and pointed his wand. \n\n
39StephenThey wouldn't do that... would they?0Stephen05
Tally couldn't help but laugh. There was nothing but an empty hallway waiting for them on the other side of the door.
For a fleeting moment her mind actually toyed with the belief that there might actually have been a knife-wielding maniac waiting for them. Of course she knew that was absurd, but still, she almost wished for it to be true.
She turned to Stephen, still laughing,
"Well, maybe next he'll be waiting." She closed the classroom door and turned away from it, "I suppose we should start on those spells so that we can be ready for the maniac once he decides to make an appearance." She said in a voice that was sure such a thing would happen.\n\n
"Okay then," nodded Jenna, "good try for the first time though." Jenna was suprised at her own abilities though, the more she tried, the better she got at casting spells. That was to be expected though, right?
"Here comes another," said Jenna, "Flipendo!" Jenna was suprised at the outcome, the spell was abnormally strong for her. She just hoped that Mia would be able to handle it this time, she didn't mean to hurt her.\n\n
Mia saw the spell coming at her and got ready. She concentrated really hard so she could get her spell right... and not get knocked back down.
"Protego!" Mia spoke clearly.
To Mia's surprise, her spell seemed to work. Jenna's jinx seemed pretty strong. She did feel the force of Jenna's jinx slide her back a bit but the brunt of the knockback jinx didn't hit her. Mia could only asume that her protection spell worked for the most part and that meant...
'Uh-oh.' Mia thought to herself.
Mia stared wide eyed as she saw Jenna's spell head back towards its owner. She hope Jenna could block herself from her own spell or at least move out of the way.
Jenna's eyes widened when she saw the spell coming towards her. Sure she had her wand ready, but she had never tried the spell before. Now, when such a powerful looking spell was coming at her didn't seem like a good time to chance, although she might as well try.
Following instinct, she quickly ducked and rolled to the left so that she was on her back. Closing her eyes she shouted "Protego!"
Slowly, she opened an eye to see that it had worked. It took a moment for that to sink in. A spell had worked for her? And on the first try? She couldn't even completely control her knockback spell, and sure wasn't all that grand at disarming. How had this happened?
She got up from the floor and brushed off some of the dust, preparing for Mia's reaction.\n\n
0Jenna Hkind of like ping-pong, isn't it?46Jenna H05
Mia quickly side stepped the powerful jinx and it crashed into the wall behind her, leaving a bit of a dent in the wall. Mia chose not to look at where the jinx went but rather at Jenna getting up from the ground.
"Nice duck and roll." Mia said with a laugh "And awesome protection spell. I hope I can do it like that. Mine was alright but that was so cool!" Mia said, her high pitched voice getting the better of her.
Mia was showing off her signature bright smile again. More than once, she had been called ditzy and blonde because she seemed that way at times. Mia gave off a child-like impression of innocence and many things were amazing to her. She was always smiling and always giving off a happy expression. It was very rare to see her upset because she tended to hide those kind of feelings behind a mask of smiles. She seemed very fluffy and airheaded but still didn't like being called ditzy or blonde. Even if she seemed like it.
Mia held out her right arm in front of herself and twirled her wand through her fingers once again. She felt very accomplished but there was still plenty of time until class was over.
"Well, I think we both practiced both spells, so now what?"\n\n
"I can't believe I did that," she said in a dreamy tone, her eyes unfocused, " and that, too," she pointed to the dent in the wall. She grinned, coming back to herself, jumping up and down, "That was really cool!"
Now that that was out of her system, Jenna was completely back to normal. She was a bit taken aback by Mia's sudden hyperness, but thought little of it. Everyone had their moments, of course. Speaking of her little moment before, she wanted to practice the spells some more.
"Do you want to go over the spell some more? I want to get some more control over mine," suggested Jenna. \n\n
Mia was all for doing more spell work. Hopefully if she did it right then it meant more practice for her and more points for her house. Mia smiled brightly some more and pointed her wand back at Jenna in a very fancy manner. Mia laughed and twirled the wand in her fingers before finallyleaving it pointed at Jenna.
"I'm ready when you are. In fact, You'd better be ready because you're going to practice more of those awesome protection spells that you do." Mia said with a laugh. She was in such a good mood that nothing seemed to be able to bring her down at that moment. She did three spells right in class. Yay for her!
"Ready? Here we go." Mia closed her left eye and stuck out her tongue as she pretended to precisely aim her spell. Mia smirked and spoke clearly.
Looking hugely disappointed, Stephen let loose a long sigh as he let his wand arm drop down to his side.
"Yeah," he said unenthusiastically. Then he started and looked at Tally. "Yeah," he all bar yelled. "I'm going to go maniac hunting after the lesson is over. I bet he's hiding around here somewhere. Come on," he said, moving a small distance away and lifting his wand to point it at her... "Ah... what was that spell again?"
It seemed to have slipped his mind during all the excitement.\n\n

Jenna nodded at Mia, wand ready and confident in her powers. As soon as Mia had casted her spell Jenna uttered her own, "Protego!" She waited expectantly for it to work, for something to happen, but nothing did. Jenna wa... with Mia's spell and fell to the ground.
Quickly Jenna got back up again. Eyebrows raised an eyes widened in shock, she stared at her wand, as if it were the cause for the spell malfunction. "I, I don't understand," she said uncertainly to Mia, "It worked before, what happened? Why wouldn't it work again?"\n\n

Tally rolled her eyes at Stephen. He actually wanted to find a maniac with a knife. He was strange, but he was a breath of fresh air for Tally. She smiled over at him as she faced him.
"Depends on which incantation you mean. The shield charm's incantation is Protego and the wand movements is a counter-clockwise circle like this," Tally raised her wand arm and formed a circle in a counter-clockwise circle, exactly as her father had taught her. "To rid a person of his or her wand, you point your wand at the person's wand arm and say 'Expelliarmus'" She lowered her wand and placed her hand on her hip while tilting her head slightly to look at Stephen. She vaguely remember him to be the one who tried to dowse Bulla in charms, but succeeded to drown himself instead. She wasn't sure he'd be any good, but it couldn't hurt to try.
"I suggest that one of us do the shield charm while the other the disarming charm. And then we switch. As soon as the shield charm is decent, we can just do the disarming charm to make sure it works. But, if you want to do it some other way, I'm open for suggestions."\n\n
Stephen grinned as she rolled her eyes at him, but then sobered up a little as she explained the spells to him again. With a frown, he lifted his wand a little higher and did a mirror image of the movement that Tally had just shown him.
"Protego," he cast, then waited expectantly. There was no obvious result like there had been with other spells, but then with this being a shield, he reasoned, maybe it wasn't supposed to be obvious.
Satisfied with that explanation, he looked over at Tally again.
"Ok, hit me with your best shot," he challenged her.\n\n
39Stephen (Not a Teppenpaw)Nah, there's only always something more interesting.0Stephen (Not a Teppenpaw)05
Tally smiled at Stephen, hell hath no fear, or whatever that saying was Tally thought with amusement as she looked him over. Before throwing the curse at Stephen, Tally quickly swooped her long hair into a ponytail, incase the spell rebounded back to her, she wanted to be sure she could see. Settling back into position, Tally raised her wand,
"Just a warning, but I'm not sure how my aim is at the moment." Tally planted her feet into a dueling stance and raised her other arm for support of her weight. when her body was ready, she took aim and said clearly, "Expelliarmus!" She watched the spell shoot out of her wand and head in Stephen's direction.\n\n
Mia put her finger to her lips in thought. Well, if the spell worked once then it should work again...unless it was a total fluke. But if it was, Mia couldn't argue that it was an awesome fluke. Then Mia had to wonder if her spell had been a fluke as well.
"Well, we both only just learned the spell. Maybe this one is harder than the knockback jinx so once you get it, you have to keep practicing it for it work everytime. Let's try again and see if it works and then you can do it to me again and we'll se if I can still do it. Okay?" Mia suggested with a confident smile.
She had full confidence that Jenna could do this spell, no problem. Mia readied her wand again and prepared to fire her spell. She remembered that Jenna still had to do the disarming spell before they were done so she would have to get this done fast.
Mia aimed her wand again and fired the jinx once again...\n\n
Jenna nodded at Mia's suggestion. She was probably right, and it would come with practice. But Jenna just wished a spell would come easily to her for once. It frusterated her that she couldn't do it.
Lifting her wand, Jenna was ready and waiting to try again when Mia casted her spell. Counting down to three, she yelled, "Protego!"
It had worked, although it was a pitifully weak block. If she hadn't known better, she would have thought that someone had made it go in slow motion as the spell took its time bouncing off the block and going in the other direction. It annoyed her still though, why did this have to be so hard?\n\n
Forever and ever and the days after that until time ends...
by Stephen
Stephen was ready. He had cast the spell, and was feeling pumped and ready for anything. Holding his wand tightly he held it roughly in the same place that it had finished after he had cast the spell.
Confident in his handywork he didn't so much as move when she took a stance that looked rather... preditory.
"Expelliarmus!"
It was like time slowed down as the clear syllables of the spell were uttered. He could see the beam leave her wand, and coming toward him. Anytime, he thought. Anytime that spell I cast is going to kick into action and boom! That beam is going to shatter.
But it didn't.
It kept on coming and coming. And time started to catch up with itself. Not even in the last half-second did Stephen experience even a twinge of fear that his shield wouldn't work. And then it struck.
"Hey!" Stephen said, sounding slightly pained and more than a little comfused. His other hand flew up to provide backup to his wand hand whose knuckles had turned white in the effort to retain his grip, but it was too late. "Youch!"
Wringing his arm that ached suddenly and sharply, he looked over at Tally in admiration. "That was really good. Your spell worked just like the professor said. But... But I cast the shield," he said in consternation. "I cast it just like you said - the movement and everything." Wincing as he did so, he went over the movement again sans wand. Again he repeated the exact movement Tally had shown him in mirror image.
Perplexed and at a loss he looked at her, wondering if she could give him any answers as to what had happened.\n\n

Mia watched as Jenna blocked the spell but only just. She could see the frustration bulding up and decided that it wouldn't help either of them if Jenna blew something up through frustration.
"Why don't you take a breather Jenna. Maybe I can give the spells another try and see if I can still do them or not." Mia offered again.
She was trying to keep the mood still somewhat lifted but Jenna seemed to be really annoyed. Maybe for a witch that's known about spells her whole life, this is as frustrating and annoying as for a muggleborn who can't beat a particularly annoying level in a video game. Oh, if that's the case then Mia knew her pain. Mia smiled weakly at the thought and turned back to Jenna.
"So how about it? You want to try again? Or you want to take five and let me take another shot?"\n\n
Jenna shook her head. She wanted to keep going, because if she stopped she would be able to think and thinking was bad. She didn't want to think right now, all she wanted to do was get the spell right.
"No, let's keep going, but this time I'll send the flipendo and you will have to block it," answered Jenna, wiping beads of sweat from her forhead.
Tally had stood, still in the dueling stance, and watched at her spell struck Stephen. She was surprised that he hadn't moved from his practice stance.
He looked perplexed at the fact that his spell hadn't worked. Tally, trying not to smile at his compliment, watched him repeat the movements. She then realized his problem, he had watched her do the movements counter-clockwise, but when he did it, he did it clockwise. Making the spell totally useless. She walked up to him and placed her hand onto his wand arm,
"Sorry if the spell hurt, most know that it does just a little. Depending on how strong it is." She pivetted her body so that she was now beside him, her hand over his, "You are going the wrong way, it's like this," She made the circle in the counter-clockwise motion taking his hand and wand with her., "You say the incantation as you make the circle. Usually you are able to see a ripple to let you know that it's working." She released his hand and stepped away from him and back to her position across the room, "I suggest saying the spell after I cast mine, that way your shield charm won't wear off." Tally waited for Stephen to let her know when he was ready.\n\n

Mia watched the jinx head her way. She got her wand ready and said the protection spell clearly.
"Protego!"
Mia could feel the jinx hit her but she didn't get the brunt of it. Her spell worked a bit but not perfectly. That was starting to get annoying. It sort of hit a nerve when the spell works but not quite well enough for one's liking. Mia kept a cool and collected face and noticed that she had slid back a few inches.
'Wow, magic is really powerful.' Mia thought to herself as she readied her wand for what seemed like the millionth time today.
"See? You have to keep at it to get it right. That was kind of sad wasn't it?" Mia asked about her own spell with a laugh.
Mia pointed her wand again and waited for Jenna to go again. Her hazel eyes were gleaming with determination from behind her small glasses. She understood that repeating the spells could seem tedious but if that was what it took to get it right, then that's what Mia was willing to do. \n\n
Jenna didn't know exactly why she did it. A brief spot of spontaneous-ness, or something like it. Mia was just standing there with her wand as the perfect target, afterall. The temptation was too much, she supposed, and she really wanted to try the spell.
That was why, instead of sending the Knockback Spell, as Mia probably expected, Jenna waved her wand and said in a commanding voice, "Expelliarmus!"\n\n
Mia heard Jenna say a spell but it wasn't what she was expecting. Her mind toally blanked as she heard Jenna call out,
'Expelliarmus'
It took a moment to comprehend that you do the same spell even if your partner does a different one. Before Mia got her thoughts back in order she felt her wand shoot from her grasp and clatter to the floor near Jenna. Mia was shocked and still had her arm out as though she was still holding her wand. She blinked stupidly at her suddenly empty hand. That had all happened within a few seconds.
Mia shook her head and laughed as she put her wand arm down. She saw her wand near Jenna's feet and was very impressed.
"Wow, that was a big jump. The first time you did that spell, you put a dent in the wall. Now you did it just fine. Sorry, I guess I wasn't ready for you to do that spell. I blanked for a second." Mia said with her smile and a shrug "Toss me my wand so we can go again. You've got the hang of this one."
"And no more surprises!" Mia waved her finger as she mock scolded her friend. She started laughing and waited for her wand to be returned.\n\n
Jenna blushed, "It was just too much of a target- I'm sorry. No more suprises, I promise. Here's your wand back," Jenna smiled sheepishly as she handed Mia back her wand. Taking a few steps back she smiled. Even though she had caught Mia off guard, the spell had worked.
"Flipendo," she uttered. She didn't get to see what happened with the spell, as she sneezed a second hour, dropping her wand.\n\n
Stephen would have whipped away his arm the second Tally started to take it, moving it from where being touched could make the sharp ache worse, except that he was interested in what she was showing him. That didn't however stop him from doing so the second she finished the demonstration. He was glad that she hadn't been watching his face at the time though - the big problem with having a highly expressive face was that it, oddly enough, tended to be highly expressive.
"Oh," said Stephen gingerly moving to where his wand had dropped and picking it up with his other hand. "Oh, I get you. Ok - I'm going to try it again."
Not mentioning the pain in his arm as he didn't want to be made to leave - not when the fun was just beginning - he made to swap the wand back into the correct hand then thought better of it. And besides, it would be exciting to be able to use both hands. There were possibilities that the idea brought forth. Interesting possibilities.
Not really understanding what Tally meant when she said casting the spell after her would make it more effective, he didn't wait. No, he was to jittery and excited to wait.
"Protego!" he cast, doing the movement correctly, if a little awkwardly with his other hand. A faint ripple sprang up, and he beamed over at the girl. "Check it out, Tal! I think it worked this time!!"\n\n
Mia smiled as she took her wand back from Jenna. She may have been caught off guard but the spell did work. Maybe that would help not make Jenna so frustrated. At least she knew she could do it.
Mia was ready when Jenna sent another knockback jinx her way. She held her wand at the ready and cast her protection spell.
"Protego!"
Mia squinted and she felt her hair being blown back from the force of Jenna's jinx but this time, she didn't move at all. The jinx was sent back Jenna's way. Mia was proud of herself. That was the second or third (Mia forgot) time that she did the spell mostly correct.
She looked back at Jenna to see if this was the beginnnings of another ping pong game. The jinx wasn't that strong that Jenna wouldn't be able to block it.
An optimist and energetic, who would have thought?

Tally stood at her spot, watching Stephen with interest. He didn't seem to want to use the same arm, perhaps even favoring his other hand from his wand hand. Did I hurt him? A look of worry passed her face for a moment as she watched him. He doesn't seem hurt though... Tally nervously bit her lip and readied herself once again as Stephen raised his wand.
She would have cast the spell first, but Stephen was too eager and already cast his shield charm spell. His was so excited that it worked. His happiness caused Tally to forget her worry and laugh with his excitement. A large smile spread across her face, giving her the carefree look.
"Alright, it looks good, but can it handle my spell work?" She said teasingly and with a slight challenge to her tone, "Expelliarmus!" Tally cried and watched with an eager excitement to see if Stephen's spell was strong or if her's was stronger.\n\n

Jenna picked up her wand, just in time to rebound the spell, "Protego!". It wasn't her best, but it was pretty decent, and Jenna smiled. She watched the spell rebound, and prepared for Mia to throw it back at her.\n\n
Mia watched in an almost bored way as the jinx came back her way. She aimed her wand at the oncoming jinx and reflected it with much more ease.
"Protego!" Mia chanted again with a bit less enthusiasm.
She had done the spell now a few times and had gotten the hang of it. She was proud of herself and happy that Jenna seemed to be in a better mood after doing the protection spell and disarming spell correctly. Mia had done both as well and smiled at the thought. But she also had another thought.
There had to be a way to do this so it's not just throwing the same spell back and forth until it hits one the girls because they stopped paying attention out of bordom. Mia's mind was drawing a blank on how to do this. That was a bit unusual since Mia was normally good at thinking of a way to make things creative. But it seemed her creative juices had run dry for now. She sighed and waited for the spell to come back her way...again.
She just hoped Jenna could find a way to liven things a bit.\n\n
Mia had hit it back at Jenna again, and she prepared to throw up another blocking spell. But she held back, she looked and saw that remnants of her first spell were still there. She wondered if it would still hold up.
Instead of muttering the spell, she said, "Flipendo!" The original spell was blocked, but barely, and Jenna felt some of the force come her way. She watched the two spells go in the other direction with interest. She wondered what Mia would do with two instead of one.\n\n
Mia stared wide eyed as Jenna added a second jinx to the rebound. Now there were two spells headed in Mia's direction. This wasn't exactly the change Mia had in mind but then again, she wasn't sure what she had in mind.
She knew the professor said something about being attacked with two spells but totally forgot as she attempted to save herself from a sore bottom. Mia quickly readied her wand and aimed her protection spell.
"Protego!" Mia chanted.
The spell worked...for one of the jinxes. Luckily, the newer and stronger jinx was sent back Jenna's way while Mia was knocked over by the smaller one. There was still enough force to knock Mia off her feet. She toppled with a thud and laughed a little as she rubbed her back but sprang back up. She knew the stronger jinx was still in play and Jenna would surely send it back Mia's way.
Mia watched Jenna block the stronger spell. Both girls had become very good at the spells they had to learn for class and there wasn't much else to do. Mia heard Jenna voice her opinion and Mia totally agreed.
"You are too right Jenna." Mia said with mock seriousness as she continued to watch the spell head her way. She just smirked and took an uncaring small step to her left and the spell completely missed her and hit the wall behind her. Mia slightly winced at the crash behind her but quickly brought the smirk back.
Mia turned around in a very business like manner and walked over to the wall. She ran her hand over the now larger crack to assess the damage. Mia couldn't help herself anymore and started laughing. She turned to look back at Jenna.
"We sure did a number on this wall, huh?" Mia asked through her laughing fit.
"Well," Mia started after calming down a little "if we've mastered the two spells and the class isn't quite over yet, then what do we do?" Mia asked as she began threadig her wand through her dainty fingers again.
She began shifting her weight back and forth from the balls of her feet to her toes as she watched the other students and waited for Jenna's answer.\n\n
Jenna stared at the wall, turned to Mia, and said melodramatically "I think the first thing we should do is have a moment of silence in honor of this wall- which has so bravely taken these spells without a word of protest, so that we may improve in our education. We shall forever remember its courage in our battle. One day we will bring our children to this place, and show them this brave wall. Let the moment of silence begin."
Jenna was quiet for about five seconds, staring at the wall, "Okay, now that that's over, we really do need to find something to do now, don't we? I'm out of ideas, that wall thing could only last for so long."\n\n

Sorrel and Ash slouched into their usual seats, passing the time until the Professor walked in by playing peanut war. When Zephyrflame did appear, they stopped fairly promptly, Ash looking mildly more attentive than his sister, although she was willing to pay attention. Until the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth words left his mouth, at which he promptly lost the attention of both twins. It had wavered on words thirteen and fourteen (‘self defence') but ‘self defence only' was the final straw. Boring. They resorted to quietly poking, pinching and hitting at each other's legs under the table, whilst Zephyrflame droned on.
'...a maniac holding a knife.' This caused both twins to pause mid-offensive, though Sorrel realised more quickly that it had just been an example, and whilst it was one she fully appreciated, it was clear Zephyflame wasn't going anywhere with it. She took advantage of Ash's attention being captivated momentarily longer than her own to slap his leg. He bit his lip to avoid letting out a cry, pinching her hard in return. All assaults were carried out silently, but it must have looked to anyone who couldn't see what they were doing like the twins had ants in their pants.
After a while, they realised that the endless drone was missing from the noises of the classroom and that their fellow students were moving around. They glanced around, seeing most people were looking in books and pulled their own out. Glancing at the person next to her, Sorrel noted what page they were on and turned to it.
"Honestly, if it's not bad enough that we have to do this self defence crud, he's making us read about it too!"
"Yeah... Gay," muttered Ash. "Hey, look at this," he said, pointing at the diagram for ‘Expelliarmus'. It showed the first figure waving his wand, and the second's soaring into his hand.
"Cool?" shrugged Sorrel. Sure, it would be quite useful, but it was hardly note worthy. Hexes were better.
"Weren't you listening sister dearest?" he asked in mock lofty tones (only geeks listened all the time). "He suggested using it to get a knife off a maniac," he explained, having listened long enough to find out the purpose of the example, "Cle-ver. You're a bit screwed if it doesn't come at you handle first, aren't you?"
"That'd be so funny!" laughed Sorrel, "Expelliarmus! Woosh! SPLAT!" she said loudly. Ash laughed as she doubled over, clutching at her ‘profusely bleeding' hand.
"Be an interesting way to liven this class up..." he mused. "And that sheildy one looks like it's meant to protect you," he observed, earning him a ‘duh' from Sorrel. "No point doing a dummy run, is there?" he grinned.
"And we both know a hex..."
"Or two," grinned Ash, remembering the research he'd been doing in his frees. His excuse was that they were to use on Sorrel, though he was more likely to use them on someone who hurt her. Still, it would be good to uphold his excuse, plus it was a classroom situation. It was like their sparring practices.
"Give me your worst," she instructed, grinning.
"You asked for it," he grinned back. He ran through the limited hexes he knew, wondering which to treat his sister to. She'd most likely be expecting the knock-back jinx. So that wasn't happening... He'd only got around to reading about two hexes in the library; the leg locker and a nose bleed curse. Whilst the idea of Sorrel having to hop everywhere was amusing, it was a little like the knock-back jinx. And the idea of her trying to cast through a nose bleed was amusing.
"Sanguinus!" he cried, aiming his wand at her nose.
"Protego!" she countered. It didn't look like anything had happened at first. Ash's spell (a rather weedy version of what it was meant to be) headed at her with nothing in his way. A small way from Sorrel, it seemed to struggle, and it fizzled out a hair's breadth from her nose. It was impossible to say whether it was because she had made something of a shield, just not enough to take a proper form, or whether Ash's weak spell had just given out at a lucky moment.
"What the hell was that?" she asked.
"Wait till I get it right and find out...." he grinned. If he had bothered to listen to Zephyrflame's threat about hurting people, he probably wouldn't have heeded it anyway....
OOC - I know it's just a fictional character, and stuff, but I just wanted to say I really hate it when people use ‘gay' as an insult, or to mean ‘crap' or whatever. It's just the sort of thing Ash would say, so I'm sorry for that, to anyone else who wants to punch people who use things like that as insults. \n\n

Mia couldn't help but laugh as she and Jenna stood in silence for maybe five seconds at the most. The only sound was of other students practicing spells but Jenna quickly interupted the silence.
"You're right. The wall drama does only lasts for so long and class doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon. Sadly, I have to admit that my imagination is fresh out of ideas." Mia said with an apologetic smile.
She walked back over to her seat and started packing away her stuff while continuing to think of something to do. She'd feel bad if she forced Jenna to be bored because of her own lack of creativity. As Mia put her text book away, her hand brushed the library book she took earlier in the year. It was filled with spells and many of them she hadn't gotten around to yet.
Mia smiled and pulled the book out of her bag. She plopped it down in front of her and opened to a random page. She was positive that Jenna had mentioned being a pureblood sometime in the past but Mia couldn't remember exactly when. She figured Jenna already knew a lot of spells and could do many of the ones in the book.
Mia skimmed the random page and one spell seemed to jump out at her. The repairing spell, "Reparo".
"Repairing..." Mia spoke softly to herself mostly and her mind began churning again.
'What needs repairing though?' Mia asked herself.
She smacked herself on the forehead. She winced and only then rememebered the memo to herself not to do that again.
"The wall!" Mia exclaimed with a laugh and turned to Jenna "Well, here's an idea. I think we still owe this brave wall something. Care to help me attempt to fix it? That should use up some time."
Mia smiled brightly as she pointed to the spell she was talking about. \n\n
"Well, restoring it will make it less of a landmark in our education, but knowing me, there will be plenty of instance to beat it up again," Jenna nodded, "and we can fix the window too, probably," she looked up and down at the wall and all it's blemishes, "We should probably clean the wall up a bit too. I think the spells might have burnt it a little. Who knows, maybe we'll get extra credit or something," she added that last part loudly, in hopes that the teacher might hear.
"The cleaning charm goes like this. I used it a lot for when I screw up Potions and stuff. Scourgify!" she swished her wand at the wall, and the rubble was cleaned, the wall began to shine.
"Reparo!" she said and a small crack was closed. The wall was looking better already.
"See," said Jenna, turning to Mia, "It's going from war-zone wall, to super shiny wall!"\n\n

well, I thought you might have picked up on it by now....
by Stephen
Again he stood, waiting for the spell to approach. He flinched slightly and adjusted his grip on his wand as the light of the spell escaped her, but that was it. He didn't try to get out of the way. It was up to his shield to prove itself.
There was a flash as the beam signifying Tally's expelliarmu... the haze that indicated the presence of his shield. Blinking and squinting as he tried to get his vision back, he saw the haze became unsteady, dying a little as the beam continued to beat against it, and then, suddenly, flicker out.
Plans to throw himself aside were put off when he noticed that the beam also looked to have fizzled out.
"Hey," he said, a grin taking over his face, "hey Tally, did you see that? They canceled each other out!! My shield did handled your spell!" Impishly, he stuck out his tongue out at her, and then, moving closer to grab her hands broke into a mad jig. "I did it! I did it! ... and you did it too!"\n\n

Tally stood rooted in her spot as she watched her disarming charm streak towards Stephen. She was impressed by her own strength of her spells, but she knew it shouldn't have surprised her. Her father and brother were Aurors and both had practiced such defensive spells since she was a little girl. Although, without wands or real magic, just imagination.
She had to squint to see properly as her spell hit his and created a bright light source. At first she thought that her spell would rebound and chase her down, but instead, both her's and Stephen's spells fizzled out. She was rather impressed that his shield charm worked so well on only his second try.
She grinned brightly at Stephen as his excitement for what happened could be heard in his voice. Tally almost made a face back to him when he stuck out his tongue at her, but he had suddenly grabbed her and started doing some weird dance. Instead, Tally burst out laughing and it took her a moment to calm herself down.
"Yes, we did do it. Congratulations Stephen. That was an awesome spell job." She released her hands from his grip and stepped back, "So, do you want to switch or try it again?"\n\n
landmarks and jigsawed windows all in one day
by Mia
Mia smiled as most of the wall began to shine and look as good as new. She like the thought of fixing the wall but she also liked the thought of the land mark. Mia walked over to where Jenna didn't use the spell yet and covered a small crack with her small hand.
"We can always save a small spot as a memorial." Mia offered with a bright smile.
She looked over her shoulder to see if the teacher was watching them. When she confirmed that he was somewhere else, Mia took back her wand and tapped it around the small crack her hand had been covering. She spoke the spell she wanted.
"Enscribo circle."
A black circle surrounded the small crack and Mia moved back to see her handy work. She nodded, smiled and looked back at Jenna.
"Now when we're fixing the wall, we can leave that spot out." Mia said with a laugh. She readied her wand again and went over to the shattered window. She remembered how she saw Jenna do the spell and remembered what it said in the book. Mia lifted her wand to the broken glass.
"Reparo!" Mia attempted.
The shards flew back to the window pane and fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. Mia saw that there were still cracks where most of the pieces were fitting themselves together but she figured they would go away after a little bit. Sadly the cracks didn't leave.
"Oh well. It was pretty good for a first time. But I don't think we'd get much extra credit from this." Mia said with a shrug. She ran her hand over the newly fixed window and smiled at a job nearly well done.\n\n
