Dime leaned back in his chair. He couldn't wait to try this spell. Actually, he couldn't wait to try any spell. Ever since he got his letter he had been imagining this moment. His first class. His first magic spell.
As far as anyone in his family knew, he was the first wizard in the family. It was kind of scary to go where no one in his family had gone before. But kind of exciting to.
As soon as Professor Zephyrflame finished, Dime grabbed his wand off of his desk and walked quickly over to one of the dummies.
He stood in front of it for a while as he silently practiced saying 'Flippendo', making sure that the accents were on the correct syllable. He also pictured the wand movement in his mind. He wanted this to be perfect. His first spell, something he would always remember.
Dime took a deep breath as he moved his wand and said 'flippendo'. Dime's face twisted into a puzzled look. Nothing happened. The dummy didn't even twitch, let along fly through the window.
Okay, Dime decided, maybe he should say it a little louder, put more force into the spell. "Flippendo!" He said as he moved wand arm.
Dime lost his footing and took a step backwards to steady himself. He really wished the professor would've warned them that there was a kickback from this spell. Once more he noticed that the dummy didn't move.
"Okay, a little more power then," Dime said right before he shouted 'FLIPPENDO!'"
Dime moaned as he felt his feet leave the floor. The next thing he knew he was doing a somersault in the air and he landed on the floor on his back.
"Ohhh," he said as he tried to move to a sitting position. He didn't understand what happened. He was sure that the pronunciation was correct and that the wand movements were as well. Wand movements. Maybe it was his wand.
Dime looked down at the wand in his hands. His face turned candy apple red. In his excitement to perform his first spell, he had quickly grabbed his wand off the desk, never noticing that he held it point down facing himself, with the handle facing the dummy.
Dime quickly looked around the room, fervantly hoping in vain that no one had noticed what had happened.
Well, at least he was right about one thing, Dime consoled himself, it was a lesson and a spell that he would never forget. \n\n
