The breaks were never quite long enough in Florence's book. Over the Christmas break she and her beau had had a very long talk about the future. Neither of them were getting any younger and with how long they had been dating it only seemed logical to get hitched. Florence, however, was finding it difficult to agree wholeheartedly. She did love him, but neither of them were willing to quit their current careers to be with the other. Her winter break had ended before any decision had been reached leaving her in a strange mood during the second term.
Florence wanted to stay focused on her students, especially her Advanced students who would be taking their RATS very soon. She had always been a performer and was used to channeling her emotions into a productive and convincing facade.
Today was no different as she waited for the Advanced students to enter. Instead of torturing herself with pros and cons of giving up her job as a professor, she wondered who the hooligans were that continued to vandalize the school. It was very likely that some unbridled magic could be the cause, but she didn't want to rule out unbridled students just yet.
"Good afternoon," she greeted her class. Advanced had always been her favorite over the years. This was the class of students that actually wanted to be here and knew what they were doing unlike the little first years who could hardly hold a wand properly. "I hope you all read the chapter on nonverbal charms last night as it will benefit you greatly today. I've been lecturing about it for the past week, but today is the day we're finally going to put all of that theory into practice.
"As you all should remember, nonverbal spells can be somewhat less effective than saying the incantation aloud. Seventh-years, take copious notes: you'll be expected to perform nonverbal spells on your RATS. Sixth-years, I'd like you to first try the Summoning Charm non-verbally. You can summon whatever you like, whether it be a quill or a piece of parchment or your book bag. Just try not to disturb your neighbors. Seventh-years, use the Invisibility Charm on any object within reason. Please do not practice these charms on each other or I will deduct points from your house.
"Once you've successfully completed your task, come and show me and I will give you your points for the day. Go ahead and begin."

Chloe just wasn’t feeling this term at all. The summer entering her Sixth year had her in the hospital with her mother and nearly able to see Threstals. Her actual Sixth year had her miserable dealing with Mother drama, getting letters from her long lost Pembroke family, dealing with Angel’s illness, trying to understand these ‘secrets’ that were being written all over the school, working with her friends on their own emotional roller coasters, and feeling empty regarding her own prospects of life and love.
January was her birthday month and she’d be turning seventeen. There would be no real celebration (her family always celebrated her birthday during the holidays), there would be nothing special for her or anything like that. Her life was full of drama but not the sort that she enjoyed. Or rather, not the sort she was really hoping for. There were those heart carvings in the trees and on the Aladren board (according to her brother), those were meant for people who were in love. People who had others that cared enough about them to scratch it into school property. Chloe only had a messed up mother and a dying brother. That’s what was currently interesting about her and they were both terrible things.
She kept her hair nice and healthy, she wore just enough make up to bring out her best features, she lost weight and was currently trying to get into a fit state; Chloe thought she was fairly decent looking, but apparently not enough. She just wanted to be a normal teenager dealing with boys. Instead she was just dealing with everything else.
Chloe sat in the Charms classroom impatiently waiting for the lesson to begin. She liked Professor Olivers. The woman usually had a flare to her. A little bit of a quirk. It made her seem more human than the other more rigid professors. Although, lately their pool of staff had grown younger and seemed less strict than the staff that was here during her younger years. Even so, Olivers had a way about her that Chloe felt she could relate too. It wasn’t always present, sometimes there was a cloud over Olivers, but Chloe could relate to that too.
She listened as the lesson began and took notes regarding what she was supposed to be doing that day. She had done all the reading (it was hard to not do homework when your roommate was a Prefect and your brother was an Aladren) and had worked on some spells when she was bored at night. Chloe had been having nightmares off and on since the beginning of the school year. As a result, she had a form of insomnia. She spent many nights by fire light in the Pecari Common Room. Usually she just stared at the ceiling or read a book, but there was the occasion where she would take out her wand and attempt some spells.
Chloe put a quill at the furthest point of her desk and picked up her wand. She felt that this would be the most challenging magic she will ever have to do. Chloe’s blue eyes squinted as she tried to concentration on the spell to summon her quill to her. After a few minutes and only a mere wiggle of the quill, she gave up. She was too tired to really work this out. Instead, she turned to watch her neighbor to see how their progress was going. “Manage anything yet?” She asked casually.
