Resisting gravity! [Years I-II] by Prof. Isis Carter

Another day, another new classroom for Isis to explore. Today, she was substituting for Professor Olivers, which might have raised a bit of concern if not for the distinct feeling that this would most likely be a one-time occurrence. And in any case, it was interesting to switch between the classes Sonora offered. It kept her from getting bored or complacent, even with the return to Defense at the end of the day.

She waited for the first and second years to show up for their Charms lesson, providing her typical grace period to allow late arrivals. Isis was, she imagined, one of the more lenient educators in that sense, but to her, it was more important that they arrived at all and learned the material than to discipline them when often times there were forces beyond their control that affected their timeliness.

When that time ran up, however, she got right down to business. “Welcome to Charms, guys. Unfortunately, Professor Olivers couldn’t be with you today, so I’ll be filling in.” She paused briefly. “So today we’re going to be working on the spell Arresto Momentum..” Per usual, the incantation appeared on the board behind her as she spoke, as well as any relevant information she provided. “This spell is used to slow down movement. If something is falling, for example, you can make it fall slower to lessen the damage when it hits the ground.”

“Start pairing up, and while you do that, I’ll be around to give each pair a ball. What I want you to do is have one person toss the ball up, and as it comes down, the other person will cast the spell to slow its descent. Make sure to take turns.” She grabbed the box of baseballs that had been sitting under her desk before starting around the room. “Once you have a ball, you can begin.”

OOC: Hey, everyone! Let’s have some wonderful, creative posts. You all know the rules by now, so make sure you stick to length requirements, realism guides, etc. Arresto Momentum in canon is taught second year, so keep in mind that first years might have a little trouble. So without any further ado, have fun!

Not defying it? by Savannah Brockert,Teppenpaw

Savannah had noticed that Professor Olivers seemed to be having difficulties attending classes this term. Actually, she'd noticed that about a lot of professors the second half of the year, given how often Professor Carter seemed to be teaching not just DADA but pretty much almost everything. Savannah felt a little bad for her, she had to be stressed out and tired. She knew that not everyone subscribed to Amity's "Work is evil" philosophy of life, but sheesh .

Of course, she did feel bad for whatever problems the regular professors were having that were causing them to be absent too. Professor Olivers had seemed rather ill the first part of the term.

Anyway, if Professor Carter was feeling overworked or tired or even resentful, she didn't seem to let on. She seemed like she usually did, which was considerably lenient compared to the rest of the professors at Sonora. Savannah had to wonder for a second about her hiring, given the Headmaster's general gruff demeanor. Either she was very qualified, they were very desperate or both. Probably both given there was no actual DADA teacher and Professor Olivers had been covering Quidditch for awhile now.

Maybe that was why she'd been sick a lot, maybe she was overworked too. Maybe Professor Carter was more capable of doing more than Professor Olivers because she was younger and that's why she could handle doing more. It might not be the nicest thought Savannah ever had, but it seemed perfectly logical, and anyway, she wasn't criticizing their regular Charms professor, just coming up with an explanation.

That was the thing, the Teppenpaw thought a lot. She thought and read and pondered, as much as some Aladrens, but while Savannah enjoyed doing so, she felt it was more important to be kind than smart.

It turned out that today's lesson was Aresto Momentum , a lesson usually taught to those in her age group, though she could vaguely remember Serena complaining about this lesson and how it had been taught last year in Intermediates. The second year had to agree, having to play catch so to speak, was less awful than having balls flung at her. Even they did have these....baseballs-had to be some Muggle sports thing, Savannah had never taken a great interest in either, but between them being unfamiliar and balls being something regularly used in sports, it was easy to deduce- which looked like they would not be fun to be hit with and Serena had gone up against something called a beach ball, which were apparently a lot larger and filled with air, more in line with trying to stop a balloon.

She approached the person next to her. "Would you like to work together?" Savannah asked.

Liac Reinhardt, Teppenpaw

I prefer to go with the flow. by Liac Reinhardt, Teppenpaw

Despite the fact that as it were, he was captain of a losing Quidditch team, it didn’t affect Liac Reindardt’s outwards appearance much at all. He still goofed off in classes, hung out with Tobi, and tried his best to wear a smile on the Quidditch field. Inside, he was sad, sure, but he didn’t want to let it get to him. He played because he wanted to represent Teppenpaw, not win- although winning never hurt either.

Today however, anything Sonora related was nowhere near the forefront of his brain. All Liac could think about was the things he would do when he got home for summer, pending his potions grade didn’t get him grounded. Not even Charms class could keep Liac’s attention for long. Charms- the very class with which he would later build the foundation of his career wasn’t even enough to pull Liac’s attention away from his imagination land. Although he started out the lesson listening attentively to Professor C., it didn’t take long for him to start picturing the never-ending baseball games, movie nights, and beach days he would organize with the other kids in his neighborhood.

Summer was a particularly anticipated time in the Reinhardt household. Not only was there the American Reinhardts’ trip to Germany, father-son time in the workshop, and spending time with his old schoolmates, but there was also the Reinhardt kids' annual summer prank war against their arch-frenemies, the Talanskis down the street. This year was the year Liac was determined to win, and as such, his leather book that was usually filled with drawings of future metal charms, now contained list after list of possible muggle pranks that Liac hoped would put the Reinhardts on top. In truth, no team had ever really ‘won’, since every year it seemed to end in a tie, but Liac was hopeful. He was getting older, and with that came new wisdom and maturity, which he planed to use to crush the Talanskis. Scribbling down ideas, Liac was so busy planning his strategy, that he almost missed his partner’s question.

Turning his head lazily, he blinked a few times; trying to register the question that nearly escaped him. Once he realized what she was inquiring, a bright smile appeared on his face as he closed his book, stood up from his seat and gave her a light friendly bow. The interaction reminded him of Chaslyn, yet another reason he was anticipating the end of this school year. Although he gained some new friends from Quidditch, Liac missed Chaslyn's unique cuteness during class. There were plenty of Brockerts in the school, but only one Chaslyn. That, however, didn’t stop him from wanting to make this Brockert girl smile.

“Why of course! How could I say no to such a lovely witch?” he said giving her another smile. “But really Ms. Brockert, I would love to,” he continued in a formal, albeit unfiltered manner, “after all, we are in the same house and year but I’ve never really gotten the chance to get to know you. Although that is probably my cousin Tobi’s fault for monopolizing me during lessons,” he joked. After 2 years, the boys’ choice of seating arrangement was more habitual than anything, but it was no secret that Liac preferred to partner with Tobi, especially during ‘boring’ lessons. There were times however were the boys sat separately, one example being today where Liac arrived a little later than Tobi. Liac couldn’t complain though, if his new partner was anything like Chaslyn, he was in for a treat.

OOC: Approval by Tobi's author to address him.
