It was now several weeks into the term and Florence was back in the swing of things. She had sent all the respective letters letting people know she was still alive, and she was beginning to conduct research on why certain charms had a tendency to go wrong. Magic was volatile, she knew that much, but to cause an entire school to practically shut down and whisk the faculty and staff away? There had to be a logical explanation, one that Florence did not know off the top of her head. The topic might be something to have her advanced students look into, but for her beginners that was irrelevant. Eventually Charms research would be necessary, but for her more serious and advanced students.
“Good morning, students,” she said, punctual as always. Her outfits had been less flamboyant than usual, and today she was wearing navy blue robes with white trimming; much more conservative wear than her students were probably used to seeing her in. “I hope you’re all awake because today you will be spending most of today’s class on your feet.” On every desk was a glass ball big enough to hold a rat or a rodent of a similar size.
“Last week we learned about the Levitation Charm, and by now you all should have mastered it. Earlier in the term we studied the Wand-Lighting Charm and its counterpart. Today you are going to put both into action; however, there is a challenge. One person is going to be levitating the glass ball while the other throws the light from their wand into the glass ball. The ball is not very big, as you can see, and so aim is very important. Now for a demonstration; would someone like to be my assistant?”
Florence chose the brave soul who had raised their hand, and had them come up to the front. “If you would levitate this ball for me, please,” she said, making sure the student levitated the glass away from themselves. She stood next to the student; though she had confidence in her aim, she wanted to show how the partners should stand next to each other to conduct the exercise. “Lumos.” Once her wand was lit, Florence drew her arm back and with a flick of her wrist the ball of light at the end of her wand went flying into the glass ball with ease. The ball, now filled with light, twinkled nicely, and Florence smiled. “And that is what you are all expected to do.” She plucked the ball out of the air and touched it with her wand, saying, “Nox,” to put the light out. “Thank you very much, you may sit down,” she said with a smile at the volunteer.
She turned back to look at the class. “Everyone, please gather your bags and stand together in the center of the room.” Once everyone was standing near the center, she swished her wand to one side, moving the desks in that half of the room against the wall, and did the same to the other side. Now there would be enough space for the lesson. “I want everyone to find a partner who is not in their year. First-years will practice levitating the glass ball. Second-years will practice throwing—remember, throw the light, not your wands. The light inside the ball will be extinguished with Nox. If you break your glass, use the Mending Charm. These glass balls are easily fixable with magic.” If Florence had been doing her job right, they should all be caught up by now, though she had been moving through the lessons rather quickly. “You may begin.”
