From the Common room to the Quidditch pitch, Nicoletta held Earl’s hand and chattered happily. Once at the pitch, she released his hand in favor of a picking out a pair of skates. The pair that she had worn the other day with Adam was on the same hook that she had left them on. She pulled them off, before glancing at Earl. Her eyes drifted down to his shoe. Turning back, she picked another pair that looked about right, but she wasn’t completely sure. “I think these will fit,” she said, handing them to Earl. “It’s important to have a pair that fit well.”
Sitting on the bench, she pulled her boots off and pulled on the skates. After they were laced, she got up and moved slowly towards the rink. She didn’t want to fall in the stands, which would probably be more painful then falling on just the ice. Tentatively, she put one foot on the ice then the other. Situated on the ice, she skated around in a small circle.
Once Earl was on the ice, she made sure she was near to him, before taking his hands, so as not to repeat the mishap she had with Adam. She hadn’t minded it, but her knee was still aching a bit. She was just glad it hadn’t swelled. With a grin, she asked, “Ready?”

When they reached the ice rink, Earl almost fell over. What had they done to the Quidditch pitch! As Nic went to get him a pair of skates, he kept saying to himself that ice melts and he'll have his field back by the end of midterm, but it was hard to convince himself.
Nic came back with skates for him and Earl pulled them on without a word. They fit pretty well, actually. Nic certainly had an eye for sizes. Then Nic went out onto the ice, and tentatively, Earl followed her. He felt like a baby deer learning to walk for the first time, and it was incredibly embarrassing. He never really saw himself as deer-like. It was very unmanly.
He finally made it onto the ice and gingerly stepped onto the ice. He put one foot on the ice and then the other. And then flailed his arms around as he temporarily lost balance. Regaining his composure, and with a crimson face, he grabbed Nic's hands, glad that she, at least, could skate.
"Ready?"
Earl looked at Nic with an expression somewhere between incredulity and confusion. Ready? He was barely staying upright. Moving seem quite out of the question, but he didn't want to sit there like a baby, while a girl out skated him. He could do this. It was just like rollerblading...except colder and slipperier. He grinned at the thought that it was just like something he could easily do. It gave him confidence. He looked at Nic and smiled.
"Ready, I guess." He put one foot forward, and then the other. This wasn't so bad. Just glide...just some very shuffle-y gliding. Still holding onto Nic for support, he turned to her.
"This isn't so bad. This snow and ice and stuff." No sooner had he said this that he moved the wrong way and fell forward onto the ice with a loud "Oomph!"
He managed to get to his knees on his own before holding out a hand for Nic to help him up. Once he was standing again, he brushed off the bit off snow that clung to his jacket and chuckled.
"Maybe it is bad."
