A patient for the mediwizard [tag: Asher] by Earl Valentine

Earl groaned. The pain in his ribs was getting worse by the minute. He was eternally greatful that Asher was nice enough to help him up to the hospital wing. He had broken a bone once when he was seven at the fault of his older brother, Eddie. Eddie denied it and walked away, leaving Earl leaning against a tree clutching his arm and crying in pain. It was an hour before Eavan wandered out and ran to get their mother.

Luckily, he didn't have to go through that again. Asher was here and he was now in the hospital wing about to be mended- very quickly, if his mother had been right, and he assumed she was.

They reached the hospital wing. The moring light gleamed intensely off the pure white walls and everything from the counters to the neatly arranged bottles of potion sparkled.
Earl almost had to shield his eyes. But instead he spoke up loudly.

"Yo Doc! A little help here?"

Oh goodie, a patient! by Philemon Papp

Philemon was overjoyed. Admittedly though, that wasn't the best sort of response to have when two eleven year olds walk in, one of them clutching his ribs and groaning in pain. Still though, he had been rather bored up til then, and he could only rearrange his supplies so many time (approximately 53 times) before it lost its interest. Same went with disinfecting the wing area, although, it didn't seem to matter how many times he ran the cleaning charms, the dust simply would not go. He'd have an hour of dust free activity, and then, boom, it just...collected.

Philemon sprung to his feet, wand ceremoniously tucked into the outer pocket of his white mediwizard robes and hands free to disengage the boy from the girl. Judging by their disshelved hair and clothes, he was guessing this was a Quidditch grown injury. He'd find out soon enough.

"I'm Nurse Papp, and it looks like you're in a bit of pain there. Lie down here," he pointed to the nearest cot. Once the boy was settled, he continued, addressing both of the students. "Now then, tell what happened and then I can get on to fixing you."

Not goodie for me... by Earl Valentine

Earl and Asher weren't standing there for five seconds when a freckly white-haired man with in a set of white robes rushed up to them. He pulled Earl free from Asher's helping grasp.

"I'm Nurse Papp, and it looks like you're in a bit of pain there. Lie down here." Earl obeyed grudgingly. He didn't like it when people told him what to do, but he was in pain. When Nurse Papp asked what had happened, Earl gave a long look over at Asher, took a deep breath, and began.

"Well, we were out on ther Quidditch field, practicing flying when Asher slipped off her broom. When I tried to catch her I fell, and then she fell on top of me and I think something broke. And, that's what happened," he finished rather lamely. Earl had decide to leave out the freezing charm and Asher flailing for her life.

"So are you gonna help me or what?"

Won't take a second by Philemon Papp

Philemon stared down at the boy thoughtfully. His guess had been correct: a Quidditch injury, and from where the boy continued to hold his side, most likely a bruised or broken rib. He'd have to make sure, first, however that it wasn't anything more serious like a punctured lung. He walked back to his supply cabinet and removed the wards preventing theft. Sixth shelf, fifth over were the first of the pain killing elixirs he made sure to keep in stock. He plucked down the peppermint flavored one- it didn't have the unusual aftertaste the chocolate one did- and handed it to the injured boy.

"Drink that down; it's a pain killer. You may feel a bit light headed for a few minutes, but it'll pass." Philemon turned to the still waiting girl- Asher, was it? "Go on and take a seat. I'll have your friend patched up in no time."

He waited until the potion was downed and then pulled out his wand to perform a simple diagnostic charm. It was one of the more colorful charms used in the mediwizardry. A complete replica of the area injured would paint itself directly over the body, allowing the Healer or, in this case, mediwizard a full viewing of the injury. The charm was a relatively new creation, only adapted a mere half century earlier, and its benefits to the profession were staggering. For this particular instance, Philemon was able to see instantly that the boy had managed to break two of his ribs, neither however puncturing a lung.

He let the charm linger as he explained the injury to the boy. "See the lines here," he said, using his wand to point to cracked ribs, "and there? Those lines mean that you've broken two of your ribs."

He jerked his wand once to the right and the charm vanished. Best get to the healing part. "Now, I'll need you to stay very still. This won't hurt but for a second." And with no further warning than those words, Philemon spoke the charm. "Osintegro!"

Thank goodness by Asher Tallow

Asher couldn't help but flinch each time Earl groaned or winced. This was all her fault, and his every pained movement reminded her of it. At least now they were finally at the Hospital Wing and the odd looking nurse could heal him. It was a bit disconcerting however, to notice first the overly starched condition of the Wing and then the somewhat cheerful manner in which the nurse greeted them.

Plus, Nurse Papp, for a man, was simply a strange thing to say.

She bit down on her lip and listened as Earl glossed over her involvement in having crushed his ribs. He left out how she was clumsy and practically knocked him to the ground. He was being very nice about it all, and she felt even worse. Thankfully though the Nurse didn't seem to care too much about the particulars and immediately took action. He gave Earl a potion of some sort, and then did the same charm that Healer from Waxonberry did when her brother broke his leg. The cracked ribs were plainly visible and again, she bit down on her lip as more guilt flooded her.

The charm dissolved and then the Nurse moved on. Asher waited for him to do something else, but all he did was stand up and take out his wand. The Nurse said something about it only hurting for a second, and then:

"Osintegro!"

Worriedly, she rushed up from her seat and to Earl's side, waiting to see what his response was. "Is it fixed?" she asked worriedly. "Does it still hurt? Earl Valentine?"

mmmm...pepperminty by Earl Valentine

Nurse Papp forced a potion down Earl's throat. It tasted like peppermint and the pain he had felt for the past ten minutes instantly turned from a sharp constant pain, to a dull throbbing. He felt a little dizzy, but much better.

Earl stifled a stifled a scream as Nurse Papp pointe ddhis wand at him and revealed a replica of Earl's rib cage.

"See the lines here...and there? Those lines mean that you've broken two of your ribs."

Earl groaned again, but this time it wasn't from pain. It was from tyher fact that he had broken something. And Asher probably felt worse than he did about it.

"Osintegro!" Nurse Papp pointed his wand once again at Earl's chest, but his time there was strange sensation. His bones tingled and his whole body felt warm for a moment before the feeling vanidhed as quickly as it had come. The dull throbbing pain was gone and Earl felt perfectly fine again.

"Is it fixed? Does it still hurt? Earl Valentine?"

It was Asher. she was hovering over him like she was his mother. It was funny actually, seeingher so upset over someone she had bare known a day.

"I'm fine, Asher. All better. You don't need to look so worried." He gave her a reassuring smile and stood up feeling his chest to make sure he was, in fact, all right before turning to Nurse Papp. "Thanks Doc! That spell you did was wicked cool. I should remeber that."

Not so fast there, partner by Philemon Papp

The boy- the Asher girl called him Earl Valentine- stood up and thumped his chest, seeming to wish to accentuate that he was fully healed and ready for a quick escape. Philemon, being the responsible adult mediwizard he was, had to hold up a hand of restraint and voice a few precautionaries. Such as:

"Just a moment, Valentine. I'm afraid you can't go just yet. I need to you to stay here in the Hospital Wing for another hour or so, just to make sure the pain killer's worn off and that there are no other injuries I need to take care of."

He smiled understandably. He remembered being eleven- it was only eleven years ago after all. His mother would literally lock him in the western wing of their home for days at a time, and while having five rooms all to yourself wasn't exactly a prison sentence, a boy still wanted to have the freedom to roam. His smile dipped for a moment; his mother wasn't exactly the best company either. However, this girl seemed nice enough, so Valentine wouldn't be too bored.

"Your friend may stay as well," he offerred, and returned to the ever busy task of digging up another of the peppermint flavored potions from his backstock.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Earl was about to leave when a hand pressed acros his newly healed chest.

"Just a moment, Valentine. I'm afraid you can't go just yet. I need to you to stay here in the Hospital Wing for another hour or so, just to make sure the pain killer's worn off and that there are no other injuries I need to take care of."

Earl just stared. Another hour in this gleaming prison? He's go blind! He was about to argue, when Papp cut him off.

"Your friend may stay as well."

Earl fell back onto the bed, a very unmanly pout spreading across his face. He sighed and looked over to where Asher was standing. "So, how bout it? Wanna stay here for another hour and keep me company?" He figured she'd say 'no' but he had to hope. She had helped him up here and had stayed with him so far. What's another hour?

In for a penny, in for a pound by Asher

Asher took the spare seat eagerly and pulled it up next to Earl's cot, turning it backwards so that she could rest her arms over its back. With her chin propped up over her elbows, she eyed her house mate critically. Nurse Papp said he was healed, but really, was it as easy as all that? Jamie had groaned and moaned for a whole two weeks afterward, sending her flying this way and that across the house to fetch things for him. Danny finally stopped her after the fourth day of it, but still, was he really okay?

"Where are you from?" she asked softly, feeling that it'd be somehow wrong to speak normally in the now silent and pristine room. "I live up north in Montana, near Waxonberry, a whole thirty miles outside of town. I'd never left home before, but this is something else."

She rushed on, warmed by the train of thought her mind was taking her. "It's amazing, isn't it? To think we're right smack in the middle of a desert and yet, we have all this greenery around us. It's like one of those oasis things, only this is all magic made. I've never seen anything like it."

"But tell me about your home, Earl Valentine. I'm not exactly on a strict schedule or anything, so for the next hour, I'm all yours."

my two cents by Earl

Asher pulled a chair up to Earl's cot and stared at him with her dark eyes. Even with the glaring white walls surrounded them, there was something calming abou the way Asher spoke. Dreamy, in a way.

She told him about her home; she asked about his. He obliged.

"I live in Los Angeles. I've been away from home before, but only for camp and stuff. And that was only like a week. It really is amazing what you can do with magic. I used to watch my aunt do things with magic and be completely amazed at like how she stirred soup without touching it and how they charmed their grandfather clock to sound like birds."

Earl stopped short. He had been rambling for a little too long. Why was he doing this? He never talked to people like this. Anyone. Except for Eavan. Then it hit him. That's why he felt so comfortable around Asher! Because she reminded of Eavan! He smiled and then noticed how quiet it was int he room. Asher was still waiting, still listening to Earl's weird incessant ramblings.

He wanted to break the silence, but he didn't want to end up telling his deepest feeling to someone he had only known a little while, bo matter how much she reminds him of his sister. So Earl compromised and asked a question.

So...um...do you like it here so far?" It was a stupid question, but it was all he could think of at the moment.

Here's my ten cents and change. by Asher

Los Angeles, the Angels. It made Asher think of the Devils, and then of her parents. They had always seemed such opposites, one the epitome of goodness, the other dark and quick with her tongue. Danny often said she looked just like her mother, and if she listened hard enough, she could hear that second muted observation. You sound like her, too. It made her want to never speak again, but that thought was more frightening than anything. To lose her voice, her ability to call out, to defend herself, it was her worst nightmare. Strange that sitting in this immaculate room would make her think of such things. Even stranger that she should think of her mother at all. That was a piece of history she'd leave unread, and then, most thankfully, unknown.

"Sonora's smaller than what I'm used to," she admitted, her voice still hushed. "My house rests on the top of a bluff and you can look for miles and see nothing but sky and grass. It's so large and vast, but not frightening like you might think. More welcoming, as if you can see yourself as part of that great big space and you're just a spot of color."

She dipped her head down, until only her eyes rested above the crook of her elbows. "It strange not having my brothers, not having the chores- and I just can't wait for classes to start," she added in, her voice turning harder as a sarcastic edge touched it. "Potions will be just great. I can see it now: I stumble and poof! there goes half the first years."

"At least the written tests will be easy," she said flatly, picking at a thread from her striped tee. "Never had a problem with those, what with my memory and all." She leaned closer, a wary eye on the still busy Nurse Papp. "I've got a photographic memory, Earl Valentine. I remember everything I read."

She leaned back and caught her chair with her heels before tipping over. Flushing slightly at another sign of her clumsiness, she grinned. "Pretty neat, huh? Do you have any hidden talents?"

Maybe only one cent by Earl

Her home sounded great. It was horrible being stuck in the city for your whole life. You couldn't breathe, the smog was so thick and the towering buildings Downtown always made him feel small and insignificant. It's probably why he stayed in his run down suburbia, with its town houses and green lawns.

Earl laughed when Asher began talking about annihilating half the first years in potions and looked up in interest when she started talking about her photographic memory. Boy, would one of those have come in handy for tests.

"Do you have any hidden talents?"

The question made him blush. Yeah, he had hidden talents. But they were hidden for a reason. Very select people knew how well he could draw. He didn't want to sound girly. Should Asher be one of those select few? Maybe some other time.

"Not really. I'm more of your average 11 year old wizard. Not good in anything, but not bad at anything either. It's really boring. I wish I could remember everything like you do." He sighed and looked away from Asher. Could she tell that he was lying? Cause he really was bad at taking tests...and the drawing thing, of course.

Asher played with the slowly unwinding piece of the thread from her t-shirt. She coiled it around her finger and then it spring back to tickle at her bare arm. She supposed this was stupid, acting all buddy-buddy with someone she barely knew. It was just her way: she either was close friends or distantly cool. Her family made it that way, what with her father's self imposed isolation.

"I only remember stuff that I read," she explained. "It doesn't help me at all with understanding, though. Or practical things. Art was always my worst in school. We did clay work once, and I managed to leave a spot of air in my pot- it blew up in the kiln and everyone's pots were destroyed."

She twisted the thread around her finger again and watched as the blood slowly pooled in and around the grooves. "I can only imagine the great joy the transfiguration professor is going to have with me. I wish arithmancy was available to first years. Numbers are the best."

Lord but she was talking alot. And nicely, too. She needed to shut up a bit. Thinking hurriedly, she asked something sure to get Earl talking more than she was. "Is it just you and your sister?"\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Earl laughed out loud as Asher described her clay pot from hell. Nothing like that had ever happened to him. Asher was funny even when she wasn't trying to be. Good, because Earl hated it when people tried to be funny and weren't.

Earl snorted into his robes when she mentioned her love of numbers, however. He was about to make a snide comment, but Asher cut him off.

"Is there just you and your younger sister?"

"No, I've three brothers too. I thought I told you this..." He was sure he had. Maybe she was forgetful with things she heard. 'Oh well,' he thought. 'I'll humor her.'

"Anyways, there's my older brother Eddie. He's a pain the a-- butt, sorry. Going and getting his girlfriend knocked up. Shameful for the whole family. World's biggest loser." Earl sighed as he picked at the fuzz balls on the hospital cot. He would have much rather had been talking to Asher in the common room. Hospitals always made him queezy. Ever since his mother..." He pushed the memory to the back of him mind and tried to continue.

"And then I've got the twins, Ethan and Elliot. They're only five, but they've got a wild streak a mile wide. They're almost as crazy as Eddie." He smiled. "Almost."

Forget cents, dollars are more amenable by Asher

"Er, I meant at your home," Asher stammered, a bit of flush about her cheeks. "I meant if it was just you and your sister at home, because you said you two were so close and all."

Feeling even more like an idiot, she rushed on. "I mean, I know lots of families live separately now, what with some of the kids with their mom and some with their dad. So, that's what I meant..."

She really was an idiot, and quickly hid her flaming cheeks behind the crook of her arms. It was much easier to be the witty, sarcastic one. This whole sincerity thing was a bit much, especially as she seemed to be so bad at it. Straightening up in her seat, she decided to quit being afraid of making a bad impression. Who cared? If Earl didn't like her how she normally was, then his loss. Right?

"So, Earl Valentine, how does it feel to have played rescuing hero for the damsel fair? You even have a war wound now, probably first in our year. You'll probably have to get used to this, though, considering you're the one boy in our house's first years. Yes, indeed, Earl Valentine, errant Knight of the Crotalus Castle. Kinda catchy, isn't it?"

Earl grimaced. Is that what she meant? God, he was an idiot. Of course that's what she meant. She already knew he had brothers. She wasn't stupid. He mentally kicked himself extremely hard, but tried to gain his composure quickly.

"Oh, yeah. No, we all live together." he rushed out at the same time Asher was trying to correct him. His cheeks flamed red as he tried to hide it by looking away at the shelf full of potions on the other side of the room. Asher's voice made him jerk his head back towards her. Most of her face was still hiding behind her arms and her voice was slightly muffled, but he heard her clear enough.

He made a funny face at the thought of being Crotalus's knight in shining armour. Riding up on the white horse to rescue the fair princess...it just wasn't his thing. He chose to momentarily ignore the comment.

"A war wound...that sounds a lot better than falling off a broom," he laughed. It sounded a little fake to him, but he doubted Asher would notice. "And...uh...yeah, that's-that's catchy alright. But there are boys in our house. They're just not in our year. I-I really don't have to be the only errant Knight of the Crotalus Castle." He was starting to get uncomfortable. He wasn't used to getting this much attention from girls outside his family. It was weird.

'I guess I have to get used to it,' he thought.

The Medic requires his clean space back. by Philemon Papp

Philemon kept his back to the duo, if only to hide the uncontrolable grins that kept springing up over his lips. To be eleven again! My, but it would have been great to go to a school like Sonora. Instead, he spent his childhood at the beck and call of his mother (do note the non capitalization of that title; no more capitals for her) and his closest sibling was a full ten years older. It would have been something else alright to have grown up with kids his age and the freedom to deal with all those social mix-ups that come between boy and girl.

Like these two. Even with his back turned, he still caught occasional glimpses of them, both tending to blush like fiends and stumbling over what appeared to be awkward conversation. It'd get easier, he mused, once they discovered a girl wasn't so different from a boy at that age and vice versa. But by the time they got that down pat, chances were they hit a whole other pit of troubles and issues.

Philemon decided to take pity on them, give the two a chance to get away from each other for a bit. The hour was nearly up, after all, and it seemed Valentine had no difficulties with the pain killer.

"Your prison term is up," he announced cheerfully, turning away from his tinkering at the supply shelf. "So you may go, just remember, Valentine, if you start to feel dizzy or your chest begins to hurt again, come back immediately. Alright? Alright."

He waved a dismissive hand, and left them to figure out what was next.

The two eleven year old's conversation was interupted by the deep voice of the mediwizard. Earl looked up and saw him smiling at them as if he knew something. It was annoying.

"Your prison term is up, so you may go, just remember, Valentine, if you start to feel dizzy or your chest begins to hurt again, come back immediately. Alright? Alright."

Earl grinned. Yes! He was free! He was finally free! He-- He looked over at Asher. "So, I guess we can leave, now." He hopped off his cot and waited for Asher to get up. "Where're you going? Thank Merlin almighty, I'm free at last by Asher

Asher pushed back her chair with no small amount of relief. Sitting still for so long and talking made her antsy. She was used to movement and activity, to keeping her hands busy and her mind free from cluttered thought. She was used to quickly tossed back and forth dialogues- her brothers saying one thing, and she countering it, the cycle never ending. She was used to laughing and joking and not caring a wit about what she said.

This whole tact thing was tiring, and she scuffed her sneaker on the white tiled floor irritably. What she wanted now was to get back to her dorm room, scare off any of the Hens who might be clucking away up there, and pull out her cello. She wasn't nearly as skilled at it as her father, but she wanted to surprise him by the winter holidays. That, and playing the cello gave her an excuse to be alone for a bit.

She shot a glance up through her lashes at Earl who looked as if the world just handed him a platter of his choosing. He wouldn't mind if she just skivved off, would he? Probably not. It wasn't as if she was his only friend at Sonora; he was with those boys at the Feast.

"I was going to go practise for a bit. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though that the Hens are off parading elsewhere, and I can have the room to myself. See you at dinner, though, okay?" And then, because Asher figured it was the right thing to do and not simply go run off, "What'll you do?"

Apparently her swift exit wasn't as swift as she wanted it to be. Asher found herself frozen near the entrance as Earl suggested they walk back to the common room together. Her plan had been to wave a quick good-bye and then make post haste for the Crotalus entrance, hopefully arriving before he did. She was feeling awkward and uncomfortable, things she did not like to feel. It made her neck itch and her palms sweaty. Again, things she did not like to feel.

So she opted out and offered a wan smile. "Well, actually," she began, her voice with just enough regret to make it sound believable, "my plan was to scout out the classrooms so I won't get lost on the first day of classes."

She shrugged and batted away the tuft of hair that was slowly unwinding from her braid. "Like I said though, see you at dinner."

Way harsh by Earl

Earl watched as Asher walked away from him. That was harsh. He wasn't used to being treated like that. Not even from Eddie. He was more direct. Asher just pushed him aside like they were strangers.

"Maybe she's not as much like Eavan as I thought," he muttered to himself as he slowly left the gleaming walls of the hospital wing and made his way back to the common room.

Halfway there, he decided to shrug it off. "Oh well, maybe she was sick of me. I would be too if I had to spend an hour with me..."
