The start of something new [Intermediate Class] by Professor Tallec

Richard sighed deeply and took a sip of his iced tea, glaring at the pile of menacing homework he had yet to grade. Although students are the ones that have to complete the assignments, he is the one that has to read, evaluate, and grade them. Usually the beginners homework went fairly quickly, but the older students who were prepping for their CATS and RATS meant that thier homework was often times more difficult and detailed. Richard loved Magical Creatures, but it was a different story when he had to read over 20 essays on the same topic.

He had made it through 3 papers by the time the intermediate students came into the classroom, bringing the warm air with them each time the door opened. It was almost the end of the year, and unfortunately he was already getting into summer vacation mode. However, he knew that he had a job to do, and as it was just about time for class to start, he stood up and walked over to the board to greet his students.

“Hello class, I hope you are all enjoying this nice weather. It's getting close to summer, but we still have a few more lessons so just bare with it a little longer,” he said more to himself than to the students. He wasn’t sure what he was planning on doing this summer with his free time, but he hoped it would involve a lot of traveling. He had been to India the previous year, and Europe this past winter, so he was figuring a trip to Australia was in order. Most of his old colleagues where scattered around the globe in remote, and often times dangerous locations- a perfect place for Richard to relax and unwind while he aided them in thier research. Due to the work load at Sonora, he wasn’t able to conduct his own research, so he had to get his fix assisting others in the field. Although he didn’t mind this, he had several proposals he had written in his spare time just in case he ever decided to go back to research.

“Going off of our short discussion last week, today we are going to be studying Winged Horses in depth. I would like you to make a KWL chart of what you know, want to know, and at the end of the class what you have learned about Winged Horses,” he said drawing out 3 columns on the board, putting each letter in a different column. "First I want you to fill out the 'K’ column about what you already know about this topic. Then I want you to fill out the “W” column with questions that you want to know about either a specific type of breed of Winged Horse, or Winged Horses in general. I want you to select and research two, or more questions from the “W” column using your books to answer them to the best of your ability, putting all the new information you have learned into the “L” column. Any questions you haven’t answered I want you to answer for homework using at least one additional source, so yes that means you will have to go to the library,” he answered before the question could be raised.

The KWL chart was a new teaching method that he had been wanting to use, however it took him a little while to find the best time to have his students test it out. Intermediates were the perfect students to try out the KWL chart, as they had the greatest range of ages. He figured that a chart like this would be far too easy for his advanced students, but he was also worried it would be a little too difficult for his beginner students, most of whom didn’t know that much about COMC to begin with. He would ask the class what they thought about it at the end of the week, hopefully they would give him his honest opinion. He was still new to teaching after all, so he needed all the honesty he could get.

He waved his wand at the stack of KWL papers, "Feel free to chat with your neighbors as long as you keep the noise level down,” he said as the papers distributed themselves to the students. Richard in particular wasn't the type of person that needed absolute silence, but he didn’t want to put any students at a disadvantage by having a noisy room. “Please call me over if you have any questions,” he added as he sat down at his desk, a stack of ungraded papers calling his name.
