Professor Kijewski

February 20, 2006 6:40 PM
Kiva stood outside in her usual clearing waiting for her first years to show up for class. She was so happy to be back outside after the disasterous year before. She definitely didn't enjoy being cooped up even if she happened to charm the classroom to look like the outdoors. It just was never the same.

So, not knowing whether or not this lesson would be interupted by mother-nature, Kiva took a deep breath in and closed her eyes for a moment, enjoying the breeze that stirred through her curls. Well, at least she could say that she had experience with Duststorms, mudstorms, blizzards, and floods. That was something most people couldn't say they had a priveledge of dealing with all with a ten month radius.

The voices of her students reached her ears, and Kiva stood up taller with a look of content upon her face as she watched them gather around her. She glanced back at the large container she had with her before turning back to her students and clapping her hands a couple of times to make sure she had their attention, "Good morning class, my name is Professor Kiva Kijewski. You may either call me Professor Kijewski, Professor K. or Kiva. Any will be fine with me. I'm glad to see that everyone is here today." She smiled warmly out at the students, pacing slightly where she stood infront of them.

"This class will be a bit more informal than your others due to what we will be learning and doing, so feel free to get comfortable." She told the students. She went behind her and opened the container, pulling something out before replacing the lid. She held up the custard-colored fur spherical shaped animal in her hands and showed it to the class, "Today we will be discussing these, can anyone tell me what this is?"

OOC: Okay everyone, I'm looking for how well you write your reponses (make sure they are at least 2 paragraphs, 5 sentences each), grammar, and how well you develop your character. There will be a second part to this lesson, so make sure you check back here. Take your time and have fun!\n\n

Lila Gringe

February 20, 2006 7:19 PM
Lila wasn't much of an outdoorsy person, or an animal person at that. She liked cats fine, but anything else had always seemed just a bit too wild. Thus, the first year had never had a pet, and never been remotely interested in having one. All right, that wasn't precisely true. There had been times, after reading various books that had characters with pets, that she'd wondered if maybe she shouldn't get one- a pet, that was. After all, pets were supposed to keep one company, and that was certainly something she wouldn't mind. She had never, however, acted on these thoughts, chalking them down to an envy of characters in books.

Despite this, she couldn't help leaning forward just a bit to get a better look at the . . . creature their professor was holding. It was furry and sphere-shaped, she noticed. But what could it be? She had no idea. Lila hadn't paid much attention to her textbook on Care of Magical Creatures. She had found the Charms textbook much more interesting.

Now that she thought about it, maybe she should have read a bit more of the former textbook. The creature looked interesting, to say the least, even if it was a creature. Likely, the other ones were as well. She made a mental note to skim through that textbook sometime soon. For now, she decided, she would wait for someone to volunteer an answer.\n\n

Morgaine Carey

February 21, 2006 5:51 PM
Just what I always wanted to do with my time, Morgaine thought glumly, examining her black shoes with an expression that could only be described as woebegone and a little disgusted. She hated the outdoors. Dirt was not a substance she liked to have any interaction with whatsoever. Contact with the ground hadn't done any immediately noticeable damage to her footwear, but she was still sure the shoes were ruined, and they were new. She had been telling at least a partial truth at the Welcoming Feast when she informed her sister their father would be less-than-pleased if she had to have anything replaced at all, never mind something new.

After the fiasco of Transfiguration, however, she knew he'd be a lot madder if she got caught skipping out on even a class like Care of Magical Creatures, and the point was to keep him as un-furious as humanely possible. With that goal in mind, she kept her eyes fixed on her shoes and her shoes fixed on a piece of ground as far from the professor as possible at her lesson, determined not to do anything else stupid. What her problem had been in the semester so far, she had no idea, but it was at an end. She was the smart Carey. The good Carey. The Carey who wasn't going to make a mess out of her life or end up in disgraced exile to a swamp.

Staying out of the action seemed like the best way to stay out of trouble until she was sure there weren't going to be any...unwelcome visitors...over her previous errors, so that was what she was going to do. She'd gotten off to a bad start, but it was still early on. She could still make things right. She could still be the good Carey girl the family thought they'd had in Gwenhwyfar. When the woman - Kijewski - began to speak, she paid attention, and so almost immediately recognized the thing her latest professor was holding up in the air.

"That's a puffskein," she announced, looking at a neutral point slightly to the professor's left. "They're scavengers and supposedly make good pets. My stepcousin has one, and she's too much of a sissy to handle anything tougher than a boll of cotton." She had found herself wondering if the woman had abducted Nana, actually, but the fact that Allie wasn't running to the front to collect her precious puffskein was telling. Allie doted on that thing, almost as much as she did on her twin. Having offered the information and done it in what she considered a fairly nice way, she retreated to her interior world of miserable musings over the state of her soles. \n\n

Melanie Rose

February 21, 2006 11:12 PM
Melanie arrived a little late but quietly made her enterance at the back of group crowding a teacher. The room she was standing in amazed her too much to pay attention to what teacher was saying. It looked as is they were outside. That is one thing Melanie liked although it was strangely different for her to actually feel calm in a classroom or any room at that. Her excuse was it reminded her of her grandparents house- out in nowhere land.

Her attention was caught when a familiar voice had spoke about a puffskein? Melanie turned her attention back to the class and seen what looked like a fur ball to her being held by the teacher. She concluded that the small ball of fluff was a puffskein. Unconsciously, she made her way to the front of the group to get a better look. "It looks like a ball of fluff. Are you sure it is an animal?" Melanie asked staring at it. She didn't really want an answer because if the teacher said it was an animal then it was.

It was a dumb question but she needed to get to Earth some how. Staring at it wouldn't help much. Actually, she was tempted to poke it but she wasn't sure if it would retaliate. There was nothing like getting eaten by a small furry thing in the morning. Taking her stare away from the creature she looked once more around the room. She couldn't wait until she could explore the grounds.\n\n

Guenter Heindrich

February 23, 2006 8:02 AM
Guenter stood in back of the entire class just watching. He liked animals but he wasn't sure if this animal was safe or not. Sure it was a small and fuzzy, but he had seen Monty Python. He wasn't going to approach it if he didn't have to. Besides, he was too tall to stand in the front. No one else would be able to see.

He had had a small, cute, fluffy bunny once. His name was Pogo and he was nice enough. But he tended to bite whenever you reached into his pen. Not a nice bunny to say the least. His mom had nearly gotten her fingers bitten off.

He heard a girl ask if it was really an animal. It was the same girl from his Transfiguration class and he still hadn't gotten her name. Asking if this puffskein, he thought he had heard it called this, was an animal was like asking if the teacher was really a witch. What was the puff ball if it wasn't an animal? It COULDN'T be a plant and it certainly couldn't be a human. What was this girl thinking? He was really starting to question her intelligence.

Guenter poked the kid standing next to him. "Hey, do you know about these puffskein things?"

He hoped he would get an answer. He was completely lost. \n\n

Adam Brockert

February 23, 2006 12:45 PM
Adam crept into the clearing where Care of Magical Creatures class was held. This was a class he was genuinely fearful of due to subject matter. There were magical creatures that had big razor sharp teeth, that were dangerous, that could maim and kill. (Of course, Adam knew there were non-magical creatures like that too.)

He went to the back. The students and teacher wouldn't see him there. Adam wasn't terrible large. He was of average height and slightly underweight. He had brown hair, which was a very common hair color. Nothing about him stuck out in anyway which meant he could remain unnoticed, the way he liked it.

Adam's face lit up when he saw the creature being presented and he smiled genuinely for the first time since he'd been sorted. A puffskien! Like Peanut. Adam loved these little creatures. He still wasn't answering though. Fortunately, the Pecari girl who'd snapped at one of the boys in Transfiguration did, while getting in a little dig at one of her relatives in the process. Adam made a mental note to stay away from her, she didn't seem very nice. If this girl thought her step-cousin was a sissy, what would she think about Adam?

Suddenly, he felt a poke. "Bah!" Adam cried out. He put his hand over his mouth hoping nobody heard him. He turned to face the poker.

"Hey, do you know about these puffskein things?"

Why did people keep asking him stuff? Did Adam look like he knew things? He certainly didn't think so. Fortunately though, he did know this . "Um, yea." He replied. "I have one as a pet. They're really harmless, but they're pretty much like that girl said." Adam looked at him nervously.

Melanie Rose

February 28, 2006 6:48 PM
Melanie was still looking at the animal that resembled a ball of fluff until her wonderous stare was interupted by absolutely nothing at all. She looked around the room wondering if anyone else wondered about the fluffy. Instead, she found her dear friend 'the giant' from Transfiguration. She didn't even know his name all she knew he was tall and could transfigure the match into a needle. He also nicknamed her 'Spike.' It wasn't a bad nickname but it was unexpected. That is what she disagreed with. If she was getting a nickname then they should ask to call her it first. Melanie thought all of this and made her way over.
"What's up my friend, Jolly the green?" She looked up, "That fluff is weird looking."\n\n

Ginger Silverstein

March 01, 2006 8:31 AM
Ginger had been standing next to Guenther, being as quiet as she always was during class. She had been anticipating this class for a while. She wondered what sort of creatures she would learn about. She also had a slight fear that the professor was going to have the class fight the creatures. Ginger knew that if she was really going to be forced to fight a deadly beast that she would surely win. However, if it was a chimeria on Final Fantasy, she would kick it's butt three ways from Sunday. She was very suprized to see that the professor was nice. The creature this "puffskin" was very cute, and apparently harmless. It could apparently be domesticated as well. Ginger scribbled down everything in her little notebook that had a picture of Link from Zelda on it.

She was about to say something to Guenther, but before she could manage to get anything out she heard "What's up my friend, Jolly the green?" Ginger recognized her as the girl that smarted off to the flying teacher, and got kicked out of class. Ginger recoiled slightly, it wasn't that she minded the other girl's presence, she just wasn't used to her. In fact she wasn't really used to anyone's presence evne her own at this school. She had just met Guenther a few days ago, and he was very nice to her. She managed to get out a small "h-hello.." to the girl that was talking to Guenther. \n\n

Melanie directed her attention to some girl next to Jolly. She recognized her from other classes but never really met her. Being nice, she answered the girls very low spoken hello.
"Hi, I'm Melanie Rose. I don't think we ever met."
She held out hand. A bit proper although seemingly normal but that was the way it came out. This made her decision final. It was just the first day and that is why she had been acting up. Excitement. Atleast it was her excuse... or what she thought what was wrong with her.\n\n

Guenther Heindrich

March 03, 2006 4:33 PM
Jolly the Green? Where did she come up with that? He wasn't green and he didn't think anyone thought he was jolly. In fact, they probably thought he was down right dull and boring. "Hello, Spike THE RED. Funny seeing you here." He said refusing to use her real name. "You know, you should probably be paying attention. After Transfiguration, I would think that even you would know that to be wise."

He was a little angry at her using such a ridiculus name for him. At least the name he had given her in Transfiguration was dignified.

He turned to the other girl. "Oh hi! Hope me and Zack didn't make you feel unwelcome this morning! Did I ever give you my name?"

He actually liked this girl. She was nice, if a little crazy for being up so early in the morning. He hoped that she didn't feel intimidated because of his height. A lot of people made bad judgements of him because of it.

He checked to see if the teacher was saying anything he needed to know.Nope, nothing.

Hmmm, he felt popular. He had three people talking to him in class, even if he didn't particularly want to talk to one of them.\n\n

GRR. There it was again. The tall kid called her spike. Melanie only smiled.
"What? The teacher isn't saying anything!" She answered the kid. The Jolly Green Giant didn't sound too happy to see her.
"Oh- My name is Melanie Rose. Nice ta' meet ya Paul Bunyan!" She smiled as she gave her one swipe- four finger wave and shoved her hand in her pack and took out a pen. On her left hand she wrote:

Ginger started to shake a bit again with Meleanie just talking to her like that. It wasn't that she minded it at all, it just suprized her. "Ugh-ugh h-hi," she said to Melenie, she gently held out her small, soft pale hand. "I'm-G-Ginger," she said hating her nervousness once again.

She saw that on the other side of Guenther was Adam. She looked over at him, and waved shyly. She gave Guenther another nervous smile when he started to talk to her. "Well," she said not seeming as nervous. "I guess you didn't expect t-to see anyone in the library that early. I-I went to bed really early, an-and I just w-woke up earlier than I expected. W-wanted to see the place you know?" Ginger gave him another nervous smile, and said "n-no I believe I didn't get your name."\n\n

Eduard Grimaud

March 07, 2006 3:33 AM
Grim was getting in the habit of being late for class. Most of the teachers never noticed when students were arriving, and it didn't bother him one bit. He enjoyed strolling through the gardens, away from the first year fuss. He was thinking up new ways to torment the girls in first year.

When he walked up to Care of Magical Creatures, the first years were playing with fuzzy creatures, that really looked like mini mops. Mostly, they were just talking instead of doing their work. Grim saw himself as almost above these first years, most of them had no idea as to the magical world, and the ones that did were completely arrogant. He wandered up casually to the group.

'What are we doing here? Pronouncing names?' He yawned. 'I'm Grim. Easy to remember.'

Adam B.

March 07, 2006 8:55 PM
Oh, Merlin! There were now four people talking to Adam. Okay, so they weren't exactly talking to him but they were starting to cluster around him. First, there was the boy who'd initially asked the question. His height made him intimidating to Adam. Then there was Ginger, who he'd met in Transfiguration, all right, she wasn't too bad. Then the Teppenpaw girl who took the seat he wanted in that class. Last was that boy who'd gotten in a fight with the mean girl.

His hands began to shake. Adam wanted to leave, to get as far away from the class as possible. He felt like he was going to be sick. I need to get out of here. He thought, I need to go find Kaylie. I need my sister now. Kaylie would take care of him. She always had.

Adam began to feel dizzy. He leaned back against a tree and slid down it, beads of sweat trickling down his forehead. He squeezed his eyes shut. Make them all go away, he inwardly pleaded. Just let them all go away. \n\n

March 10, 2006 6:58 PM
Melanie finished her sentence when the 'holding hands' kid walked up and announced his name 'Grim' and how easy it was to remember.
"Well,Reaper, I'm Melanie Rose. Call me Melanie, Lanie, or Rose. Perferably Melanie or Rose." She tilted her head to the right and paused before she continued, "Does it really matter if it is easy to remember. No offense but I think that is a little irrelevent." Melanie spoke and then looked to the boy next to Kid-Jolly slide down to the ground. He wasn't looking good- his eyes shut, sweat rolling off his face, and his shaking didn't make him look any better. Melanie made a couple quick thoughts. Was he claustrophobic? Did he have seerer abilities? Or was he just plan out odd? She didn't know but it wasn't good.
"Hey, you guys back up a little." She spoke as she walked around the group and sat next to the kid making enough space to show no harm.
"You okay, kid?" She leaned over to look at him. It almost looked as if he was crying even though it was sweat.
"Somethin' wrong?" She didn't want to touch him incase he would flip out or she would have tried to reasure him better. She hated seeing people in any state of disturbance and this counted- no matter how strange of an occurance it was. She also cursed herself mentally for letting her New Jersey accent hit stronger then she had ever imagined it to. She'd be surprised if the others didn't look at her oddly.\n\n

Adam gasped for air. He wasn't even quite sure what was happening to him, he just knew that there were too many people around him. That just increased his fear. He had to get away but he couldn't. He was in class, he'd get in trouble if he left. Plus, Adam couldn't move. He felt dizzy and woozy and hot .

He could feel someone over him. Could hear a voice, a girl's voice. Kaylie? No, she wasn't here, not in his class. It wasn't Chelsea or Nina either, they weren't at Sonora. It had to be one of the two girls that had been standing nearby, Ginger or the Teppenpaw. Whoever it was, she sounded far away. Adam could barely make out her asking what was wrong with him. He shook his head, hoping she could make out that he was saying no, rather than interpreting it as just part of the fierce shaking of the rest of his body.\n\n

Professor Kijewski

March 22, 2006 10:46 PM
Kiva looked around for an answer and didn't have to wait long as a girl spoke up and gave her enough detail to go off from. "That's a puffskein, They're scavengers and supposedly make good pets. My stepcousin has one, and she's too much of a sissy to handle anything tougher than a boll of cotton."

"That's right, Miss Carey; however that little remark toward your cousin was unnecessary. Next time please reframe from saying such things." Kiva reprimanded in a gentle voice. "This is called a puffskein." Kiva said raising her arm a bit higher for everyone could see it. "As Miss Carey so kindly pointed out, these are scavengers and very easy to care for. They usually make the best sort of pets for beginners or when parents feel that the responsibillities of any other pet may be too great." Kiva paused here and looked toward the back of the clearing.

"The group in the back, I know I said this is an informal class, but I would appreciate it if you didn't talk while I am actually giving the lesson. This is for your benefit, not mine." Kiva said rather sternly for her demeanor. She had never had to reprimand someone more than once before. "As I was saying...what's really cool about these creatuers is that they don't mind being roughly handled. You can toss them, squeeze them, do whatever you like and you'll usually get a happy purring response from them. What I have in this pin are a bunch of puffskeins. I thought that since this is our first lesson, we might as well make it as fun as possible. If everyone could just stand up and grab one puffskein, you may take the rest of class and play with them or toss them between one another." Kiva said, opening the container and moving so that the students would have better access at getting to the puffskein.

"And yes you have to participate." She added in case someone decided to sit it out.\n\n

Saul Pierce

March 23, 2006 9:13 AM
OOC: sadly, Saul doesn't know what a tribble is, so he can't actually say the subject line ... where's Zack when you need him? BIC:

Saul had been sitting up front because this was Care of Magical Creatures and he figured the Creatures would be up with the teacher. Creatures were cool. Not that he really knew much about them, but generally speaking, creatures were cool.

When the teacher whipped out a ball of fuzz, he was a little disapointed that she was going to be talking about hairballs, but when a Miss Carey said it was 'puffskien' he regained interest. He'd heard about those. Never seen one, and definitely had never kept one as a pet since he lived more or less among mugglekind, but he'd heard of them.

His interest peaked further when Professor Kijewski invited them to come up to the front to pick one to play with for the rest of the class. This was definitely the coolest subject ever. Especially since he'd fixated on her suggestion that they could play catch with the little fuzzballs. That was soo cool.

He hurried to the container she had brought in and found a kind of rust colored one. It wiggled around in his hands and that was gonna be a cool new challenge to catching. While the ball purred happily, Saul moved away from the mass of other kids moving forward to get their own.

Spotting another kid who was kind of hanging back from the mad rush for a puffskien, he called out, hefting his guy, "You wanna play catch?" In standard fashion for one of his family, he didn't wait for an answer before tossing the living ball across the intervening eight feet between him and his classmate, "Here!"

He sidestepped to better plant his feet for catching and held out his hands, ready for the return pass.\n\n

Melanie watched him and knew what was happening. Or atleast she thought she knew. To her it looked like he was hyperventilating. She hadn't a clue as to why he would be but it seemed he was having a hard time staying focused and breathing. She heard the teacher tell 'the kids in the back' (them) to pay attention but obviously she couldn't.
"Sorry but we have a situation." She spoke up hoping the teacher would hear as the other students went to get their puffskeins. She raced through her pack and tried looking for a bag. She use to carry one around but she couldn't find it. As to improvise, she grabbed a packet of paper from her bag and started to wave air at him.
