It had been hard to shake Ash off. Since reading 'their' letter from the coach, he'd been enthusiastically discussing tactics with her. And trying to get out of her what was wrong, and why she didn't seem so enthused about their both being captains. As far as he was concerned, it was the best thing in the world - they both had power, but neither was the boss of the other - it was perfect. That was perfect to Sorrel too but, until she knew that the coach wasn't going to let Ash in on the contrary of what he now believed, she couldn't rest easy. And Ash could read her like a book, so she had to tie things up with Coop fast. Which meant getting away from Ash, who wanted to do nothing but come up with plays together...
She'd finally made good her escape by saying she was going to owl their mother the good news. In reality, she was slinking down to the pitch, hoping Ash didn't find any reason to come down here while she was talking to the coach. Especially not to talk to the coach himself. If he just came out to inspect pitch conditions, she might get away with it.
Sorrel paused outside Coop's door. She felt guilty at lying to Ash, even if she was doing it for his own good, anxious, confused and angry at the coach for not picking them both to begin with, which would have spared her this headache. But she couldn't go in there railing. She was grateful, and should seem it. She didn't want the privilege of Captain taken away, and she was asking a favour. She had to appear cheery and amiable.
Scragging a hand through her hair, she reached out and knocked on Coach Cooper's office door. \n\n
