I set it to last two weeks, if you recall. Anyone here who hadn't managed to read the book in that period is clearly not trying hard enough :-p and if they haven't managed it by now - over a month later - then how can they call themselves a Harry Potter fan?

You can talk about Deathly Hallows now, although a warning that you are going to do so in the subject line would still be appreciated, just in case.

What does everyone think? About...everything! Does anyone else feel like they kind of always knew Snape loved Lily? It was just a surprise when written down?

I keep hearing from a lot of people that the Epilougue was cheesy. I loved it! I thought it was adorable!

I thought the epilogue was born of Mary-Sue like fan-writers. I honestly couldn't believe that Jo had written it. I mean, really! I want to believe it was a mercy shot more than anything- JK's way of saying, 'Uh no, I'm really not going to be continuing Harry's journey.'

And just one more word:

The whole 'let's name our children after everyone in our lives who has died' trend? Because, personally, it kind of creeps me out.

'Yeah, so Al, uh, how'd you get your names?'

'Well, my dad named me after his mentor who was killed- mind you it was technically a mercy killing- by the guy my middle name is after, who had been in love with my dead paternal grandmother- yeah, my sister's named after her- for all his life. Where'd you get your name?'

'A baby book.'

Yes! I loved the book, I really did. There were so many amazingly-well-thought-out plot lines that all came together oh-so nicely. I did shed a little tear for Dobby - the darling.

But yes, the epilogue was almost offensive in its levels of twee. I mean, okay, if you want to name your child after someone you loved, fair enough. But all of them? And in such ridiculous combinations? I have read better fanfictions, and I'm afraid that's really saying something.

Perhaps Jo did it specifically so people didn't continue to clamour for more? 'Hmm, if that's the best she can do for an epilogue I don't want another sequel' for example.

Furthermore, the shortening of some names just shouldn't happen.

Ah. Agreed. Albus, though, should have a nickname. How awkward would it be to have to introduce yourself as Albus your whole life (never been a fan of the name...)? I guess that whole 'Potter' thing adds a kick ;D

So yes, I'm focusing on the odd parts, but that's only because everything else was so abso-lovely-lutely amazing! But yes, Snape staring into Harry's eyes to glimpse the eyes of his long since murdered love.

I had to give the page a full pause after reading that. I then re-read the passage to ensure that I wasn't just glossing over and accidentally adding words.

It was still extremely creepy. Like Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka creepy. Like Meg Griffin and Adam West creepy.

Oh, and I gushed for twenty minutes over Dobby. I was so heart-broken.

He got up to page three hundred and something and decided he wasn't going to continue because too many people were dying. The day he finds out that his hero dies is going to be awful, let me tell you.

James- like Harry but brown eyes.
Albus- just like Harry but a little shorter for his age. He gave me the "I'm a small kid" impression...

James: Dark hair, blue eyes
Albus: Like Harry
Lily: Red hair blue eyes

Rose: Dark red hair, blue or brown eyes

Hmhm... I also liked how they named the characters after loved ones. I would do that myself. I mean if someone really made a difference in your life (Lily and James did when they were dead) then you should honor them. Personally though... I'd like it if Albus's first name was Severus.

On whose death it is, or whether it was a particularily humorous, stupid or ironic death.

For example, when my dad was in college, he had this college professor, philosophy I think, who on Friday said "If there's a God, let him prove it to me."

Monday, my dad and his classmates came back to find that there teacher had died over the weekend. My dad claims he never laughed so hard.

Of course, this is the same man who played Led Zepplin's "When the Levy Breaks" after Hurricane Katrina and scratched out the name of my favorite show in the TV guide and wrote in WAR, when the Iraq war was announced.

He also told me to go the bathroom because Sheilob was going to come on when we went to see LOTR. It turned out Sheilob wasn't in that part at all. He can be such a jerk.

(Note, this is referring to the author's dad and not the character's. I know Chelsea has a fair amount of complaints about hers though.)

I would have liked it better if Harry had died at the end. It would have been more fitting. A true sacrifice.

I seriously cried when Dobby died, he was always my fav. And Kreacher? How cute was he??

This book was the best out of all seven. Everything came together nicely. And I love how she made moe characters into Heros. Like Luna and Dean. Neville progressed the most out of all of them though. Well, in my opinion, but I love Neville, so I'm biased.

The epilogue was way cheesy and over the top. But, my family is huge on naming people after others who've either passed on or made a difference in their life, so that didn't surprise me.

I thought I was the only one who thought it would've been better if Harry died in the end though my reasons could differ somewhat because I'm not particularly fond of Harry, but I agree with you.

And Dobby didn't deserve to go. It reminded me of what happened with Sirius. They were both imprisoned for such a long time (to each their own sense of the word) and then so soon after being set free, they die. I shed a tear for Dobby but I bawled for Sirius and for the complete end of the Marauders with Remus and Peter.

Does anyone else think Rowling was a bit...homicidal in the last book? It was like she was just killing off people left and right. I counted about eight important characters that died in just this one book.

Also didn't care for the epilogue. Too fanfictionesque.

Harry dying was the one thing I really wanted to happen. Weird, right? My cousin and I had long discussions about how much better the book would have been had Harry died during battle with Voldemort.

*Sigh*

I sobbed when Cedric, Sirius, and Dobby died. But not when Dumbledore died. Don't ask me why, cos I haven't figured that out yet. It might be because I didn't like the entire structure of the 6th book so I was slightly distracted with it.

Okay, was Peter's death just completely thrown in there? Am I the only one who thinks that? I mean, I guess I expected more of it.

There were a lot of deaths, some that didn't really seem necessary, but I suppose JK thought they were fitting for the plot.
0 Tally Have I ever let you down? 0 Tally 0 5

Mia

September 01, 2007 11:40 PM
Haha! Then I guess I'm weird too 'cos we're totally in the same boat. Harry should've died in the final fight. It would've been a bitter sweet victory for the wizarding world and much more tolerable than the sappy 'happily ever after' that's meant for fairytales, and not Grimm's Fairytales. Plus, I just don't like him and wouldn't have minded.

The final battle between Harry and Voldemort was kind of lame as it was. It felt like they both raised their wands and suddenly it was over and Voldemort was dead. I think their entire fight lasted all of three sentences. I could've settled for a detailed double K.O.

I didn't like the sixth book much either. Too many whiny teenagers with raging hormones. Of course, that was the reason my friend loved it. She said "It's about time they acted like real teenagers!" I felt like the real story wasn't being moved along well. And I was only kind of stunned when Dumbledore died rather than moved to tears. I think the chapter when Draco breaks Harry's nose on the train saved the whole book for me. That was probably it's shining moment. Nosy Harry gets what's coming to him.

And I was confused by Peter's death. It did feel thrown in. Again, it was like all of a sudden he's there and then he's not. Like JKR was rushing to kill off as many people as she could. I claim fictitious homicidal maniac. The only reason I was sad was because it was the official end to the Marauders and thinking about that made me sad.

I was always a closet Luna/Harry fan. I thought their one-on-one moments were really sincerely written and touching. But, eh, the prologue did aways with that. . .

However, whatever did happen to Luna? JK answered that question in a q and a session on the Bloomsburgy books page open chatroom.

Alicepie : What happend to luna, did she get married who to?

J.K. Rowling: Luna became a very famous wizarding naturalist who discovered and classified many new species of animals (though, alas, she never did find a Crumple-Horned Snorkack and had, finally, to accept that her father might have made that one up).

J.K. Rowling: She ended up marrying (rather later than Harry & co) a fellow naturalist and grandson of the great Newt Scamander (Rolf)!

So Luna is now a Scamander. Newt Scamander was, of course, author of Fantastical Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Yeah, I had to re-read that part so many times! It's like she just glanced over it. "The intense battle raged on... Oh, and BTW- Lupin and Tonks were dead."

Apparently, Teddy was one of the reasons Rowling wrote the epilogue. According to the almighty Wikipedia:

"A main reason Rowling wrote the epilogue to Potter book seven was to show readers (and herself) that Professor Lupin's now orphaned son, Teddy, was "OK." Having written the deaths of both of his fictional parents, Rowling was driven to tears by Teddy's plight ("I started to cry, so obviously Teddy Lupin was very important to me."). The epilogue provided a way for Rowling to show happy circumstances for Teddy after the death of his parents — his ongoing relationships with Harry and with his very good-looking girlfriend Victoire, Bill and Fleur Weasley's eldest daughter, whom Teddy is snogging on the Hogwarts Express."

Too bad Rowling won't write any more HP; I'd definitely read a book centered around Teddy Lupin. Just the little snippets of his character we got made him one of my favorites.

My favourite part of the whole book was when Lupin came in and told everyone about Teddy, and asked Harry to be Godfather. That brought me closer to tears than any character deaths (except for Dobby).

I'm still not sure why Tonks was even at the battle. Lupin at least had some old scores to settle, but Tonks - new born baby mean anything?

Yeah, Tonks was never the rational one. I had a bad feeling as soon as she ran off after Lupin, but I kept trying to convince myself there was no way J.K. would do that. At least not to both of them.

I thought I would be really upset about Tonks and Lupin, but in the end I was more upset about the deaths of Snape and Fred then anyone else. And for some odd reason I got really emotional about Ron leaving in the middle.

The setup for Teddy's life so closely mirroring Harry's was really interesting. Orphan with famous godfather born in times of crisis...

I didn't skim, but I was reading as fast as I could, you know? I read the whole book thoroughly, but I didn't read it as slow as I normally would for another book. I was too excited to find all the answers!! =D

I reread it 3 times and I'm going on the fourth. IT NEVER GET'S OLD! I love this book like a mother!

I got emotional when Ron left too. I love Ron way to much to go without him for too long...

I cried the hardest for Fred I think. Then Lupin and Tonks, and then Snape.

Someone said it before; I would read a book just on Teddy too!!! I'm going to marry him.

Deathly Hallows is my forever love. It is like my first born child, only not. Okay, different comparison: It is like getting another brother/sister (what would a book be considered?)!
