All the better to eat you with (cont. from Potions - Jax)
by Caelia Lucan
“That’s nonsense.” Jax replied quietly, looking put off by her words. “You should have a say in your own life. Let’s say that you do, what is it that you would want? What would you want for yourself?”
As Caelia made her way to Cascade Hall, a flat parcel wrapped carefully and clutched between two hands, Jax Donovan's words echoed over and over again in her head. She hadn't been able to answer at the time, becoming flustered and embarrassed once more. No one had ever asked her that, not even Emrys. The disparity between him and her brother had resurfaced again in that moment as she struggled for words. "I don't know," she said. "I never tried to think about it because I knew it wasn't possible."
Ashamed, she had turned back to her work, feeling worse than before, but over the rest of the class period and the other classes from their day, too, Caelia'd had time to think. She had thought as she walked back to the Crotalus dorms and changed from her school robes to a nice yet casual dress for dinner--Lucans always dressed up for dinner, Grandmother Viviane said. She thought as she used a pretty bauble given to her by Emrys two Christmases ago to pin back a couple curls from her face. She thought as she re-wrapped the handmade bookmark with it's milky white and dark blue swirls which created an ambiguous wave pattern.
In fact, Caelia didn't think she had ever thought so hard in her life when she appeared at Jax's table, present in hand, prepared to only say "Merry Christmas," and leave because really it would have been weirder if she stayed to eat with him and his friends. Instead, as she handed him the small gift, she said only six words before turning on her heel and hurrying to sit with her usual crowd.
"An astronomer, to study the universe."

Jax felt as though he had had a very strange day. His mood had been terrible for the majority of the day due to his feelings of exhaustion and pain that were often caused by the moon phase. He tried to not let these things get to him, but every month it did. It was frustrating because he knew that people must notice it and eventually someone was going to start asking questions. He had been lucky so far with only Barnaby picking up on anything, or, at least, acknowledging it. He feared what would happen should anyone start to really notice it too.
But as his day went on, his mood shifted slightly because of the conversation he had had with Caelia in Potions. She was a strange girl and not at all like he thought she would be. She was the traditional sort of Pureblood girl that Jax was used to. The one who would do exactly as she was told. She would marry someone she was told to, have the right amount of children that she was told to, enjoy the hobbies that she was told to. It must have been tiring being someone else all the time when they didn’t have to be. Jax knew what that was like on a different level. There were others like her at this school, like her friends, but he was finding more and more of them were starting to become more modernized, like Joella. He still felt better having their relationship more on the down-low and casual than upfront and open like others simply because despite her seeming to have more freedom than others, he didn’t want her hurt her future. He didn't want to be the reason she didn't have the proper future.
But that was a whole different issue that he was still trying to work out for himself.
Eating at the table with Gia and any of the other girls that would end up showing, Jax was pleasantly surprised that Caelia did indeed show up and give him a gift. What surprised him more was the fact that she admitted she wanted to be an Astronomer. She walked away too quickly for him to respond, so instead he turned back to his food with an amused grin on his face and an impressed look upon his face. He did not expect that answer from her.
He glanced up to see Gia looking as though she had just seen Jax sprout two heads. He shrugged and explained to her the situation. Gia was usually pretty good about helping him when need be. “Oh!” She exclaimed, her face lighting up. “I have something you can give to her that should be perfect.” Jax looked doubtful so she quickly added, “It’s polite to say thank you to someone.”
