Why Edda had agreed to oversee a fair booth was still unclear, even to her, but she had put it down to being extremely dissatisfied with the amount of students in need of medical assistance, a lapse in judgement, or a combination of the two. Though hosting the fair planning process in the medical wing was tempting (at least it would see some use) her sense of professionalism forbade it. True, Medic Eir was far from professional as her traps would attest to but to her own mind she was the epitome of said quality. Having a herd of jabbering nitwits prattle on about what aspects of their country to focus on seemed neither appealing (giving credence to the lapse in judgment theory) nor appropriate if the wing actually saw some attention to some unfortunate student. Most important though was the fact that Edda would not feel any sense of peace in those dull hours where all the cots were empty if she let the wing be contaminated by the witchlings and wizardlings.
When the amount of heads present equaled the number indicated on her roster she set the parchment aside and surveyed those present. After the short delay (for she would take her time later to assess them all as they worked) she began in what she must have thought a welcoming if not warm manner. “Good afternoon,” she took a moment to find a suitable word, as her personal views on children were private, “students. For those of you who do not know,” -because none of you have visited the infirmary- “I am Medic Eir. I will be monitoring your general behavior and making sure you don’t get carried away with anything. This is not my project, and I do not wish to dissuade you from your creative efforts so I will merely be chaperoning you. You may feel you do not need the supervision, but all groups require one.” ‘So tough’ she thought. “You may already be acquainted with one another, in which case you may proceed to the actual planning. If not I suggest introducing yourselves quickly and getting on with it.” It would make her life easier if she had a name to go with the faces, but honestly she would most likely not remember and revert back to thinking of them as Aladren or Teppenpaw 1, 2, and 3, in the order which they came in.
Feeling that was an adequate ending she expected someone else to come forth and take charge. Her job now was to serve herself some meat jun the elves had prepared and devour it in lieu of any real responsibility other than supervision.
Ginger was excited about the South Korea fair booth. Lauren hadn't gotten to the list before their booth filled up, though, which was disappointing, and Jemima and Owen had opted for Brazil instead, but Jake was with her, so she was sure it would go well even though her original plan to work with her roommates had fallen through. She'd still get to learn something about the country Lauren's father came from, and now she'd have an opportunity to work with a quartet of first years she probably never would have gotten to meet otherwise.
She arrived in the Cascade Hall at the appointed time and found the medic's table for their group meeting. She gave Jake a welcoming hug and kiss upon seeing him, then took one of the seats. She smiled and waved at each of the first years as they arrived and then listened attentively to the medic as she explained what was expected of them.
Ginger brushed off her gruffness, assuming she was a wonderful woman - her profession was helping people get better after all! - and she was maybe just not very good at expressing her goodwill.
So Ginger allowed a moment to make sure when she said 'get on with it' that she was actually done and really was ready for them to get on with it, then glanced over at Jake to see if he wanted to take the lead seeing as he was the sole seventh year in the group, as well as the Head Boy, but he seemed fine letting her speak first so she did, hoping to break the ice and help the young students in their group not to be intimidated by their elder peers.
"Hi, everyone! I'm Ginger, and this is Jake," her warm smile hopefully told them all she was a Teppenpaw just as obviously as the House badge on her robes. And hopefully the Assistant Captain one on the other side of her robes wasn't at all intimidating to them. "We're super excited to be working with you all on South Korea. My roommate's family is from there, so I'm hoping to learn a bit more about where they came from."
Kir showed up at the meeting, feeling optimistic about the fair. It sounded like a fun project. His family was pretty busy with a demanding work schedule, so they didn’t take long vacations, and had mostly spent them in America. Given that his father and aunt had been new to the country when they’d been high-schoolers, they had a lot of catching up to do with their new homeland. And it was big. Oh, and they went to Canada so frequently that he forgot to count it, because actually it was much closer than a lot of America, as they lived in Vermont. But ‘the rest of the world’ seemed like an interesting and varied subject, and so here he was.
The medic, who was in charge of their group, gave an extremely brief introduction, but her first instruction was at least ‘introduce yourself’ and not ‘tell me everything you know about South Korea’ because Kir was definitely a lot more confident with the information that went in the former category.
The Pierce spoke up first. He had noted The Pierce in his group with interest and concern. He knew she wasn’t a Boston Pierce, because, well, you could pretty much count those on your hands even if you’d had several fingers hexed off, and he knew them all by name even if he didn’t know them properly because Auntie Lola was good friends with Bel Pierce and they did DISCUSS things together. Benjamin Pierce was one of his Pierces. He kept meaning to speak to him but it was hard because they were in different houses and different years and, even though it was a small school, Ben was two years older and an intermediate student. One with a lot of friends. Kir wasn’t a shy person by nature, but he didn’t think he could walk up to a popular intermediate boy just because his aunt was friends with Ben’s aunt, especially as that added the complication that he was borderline convinced he must have met Ben on at least one occasion but couldn’t clearly remember where or when. He had meant to ask Bel what type of Pierce this Ginger person was but hadn’t somehow got around to it. He knew what the Pierce in his year, Winston Pierce-of-the-New-Hampshire-Pierces, was because he kept saying it. Judging by the way she introduced herself, he guessed that Ginger was a California Pierce, or at least a not particularly stuck up New Hampshire one, and he wasn’t sure there were any that fitted in both circles on that venn diagram. He relaxed a bit, and smiled at the welcoming older students.
“I’m Kir,” he introduced himself. “I, uh, don’t really know anything about South Korea or have any connections with it, but I thought it would be fun to learn about somewhere totally new. I looked into the writing system already,” he added, his robe proudly displayed its Teppenpaw badge but he was sure it had been a close thing and that he was borderline Aladren, “And it seems really interesting, so I’d like to look at that.” He refrained from explaining the writing system (and how, unlike its near neighbours, China and Japan, it had an alphabet, just a very different looking one) because he thought that might be a bit much for introductory remarks, but he could initiate someone into it later if they showed an interest. And also, as that was about the sum total of what he’d learnt so far, so he wanted to save something up for when they actually got onto working on it.

Over midterm, Amelia had told her family she was going to participate in a fair group. This had been a mistake. They had all, except her mother and brother, wanted her to spend her whole holiday doing lots of research, and while it had been interesting stuff, and Amelia did like to learn, she had not really wanted to do all that learning over Christmas. Christmas was for relaxing before she plunged back into the madness of her first year and – worse yet – plunged headlong toward her first set of end-of-the-year exams. Amelia didn’t know that these were as important in a magical school as she had always been told they were in Muggle elementary school, but she was pretty sure they were, if not actually more important, plus she was in Aladren. There were expectations that came with that and she did not want to be the first one in the family not to live up to them.
That had, unfortunately, meant not voicing her opposition to spending midterm doing work. As a result, Amelia came to the South Korea meeting with actual notes, knowing she probably looked the very stereotype of an Aladren. She guessed that was good, or at least not bad, as long as nobody decided to hate her for something Quidditch-related, and the rivalries at Sonora didn’t seem that bad to her. Everyone at school seemed to get along to a very surprising degree.
Amelia didn’t know Ginger Pierce, or if or how Ginger was related to Amelia’s cousin’s husband, but she knew who she was on sight. Ginger took the lead between herself and her boyfriend the Head Boy in welcoming them all, which Amelia liked, both because sixth seventh years were kind of intimidating even if they were Teppenpaws and because another girl was easier to smile back at. The next person who spoke up was another first year, one of the Teppenpaw boys, and Amelia smiled at him when he said he had already looked up the writing system.
“That’s really cool,” she said. Her own badge was blue, which should have given him a hint that she was being sincere. “I’m Amelia, and I’ve did some research over midterm, too – I looked at stuff about national costumes and history.”
Emerald arrived promptly for the South Korea meeting. She was rather intrigued by the whole thing. She admittedly didn't know a lot about other countries though she had learned a bit about Livilia due to recent family connections. Not that she knew Serena really at all but as her distant cousin was now a princess, Emerald, being an Aladren, of course wanted to learn whatever she could about the place where her cousin would someday rule.
And her desire to learn extended itself to South Korea. After all, if she was going to be part of a presentation that would be seen by the entire school, she wanted it to be good.
Plus, a part of Emerald had always wanted to travel more than she did. They had the money of course but so many children made it hard to do so. Especially babies. She had been deprived of something that was a normal part of life for purebloods of her status by her parents' seemingly desperate need to keep trying for a boy. Then they'd had a boy and still went and had Amethyst. She didn't quite understand their quest to have one in the first place. Jasper would have a lot of people to go through to be the Brockert patriarch. Enough that Emerald couldn't bother remembering each and every one of them. And it wasn't as if the family name was in danger of ending either, considering her brother did have all those other Brockert males ahead of them.
Honestly, the Aladren could see the drawback of marrying an actual heir, not one like her dad who might have been her grandfather's oldest son but Grandfather himself was a third son and Great Grandpa Gus was the second son of a second son. If she married someone like that and had a certain amount of daughters, she could stop especially if there were plenty of other males to carry on the family name. If Emerald did end up marrying an heir, she hoped to pop out a boy on the first or second try. And if she didn't, hopefully said heir had a brother who could continue the line.
It wasn't as if Emerald hated children. In fact she found her cousins adorable, probably because they were cousins and not siblings. She didn't even actually truly hate her siblings for the most part-Topaz was a twisted little creature but the rest she actually did love. It was just there was so many of them that it was a pain in her rear end. And that was why she didn't want more than two really. It wasn't fair to the children for there to be so many have that they got deprived of not just experiences but attention. And quite frankly Emerald didn't think Mother was equipped for even one.
She arrived at the South Korea meeting and took a seat next to Amelia. The first year listened as Medic Eir began the meeting, she was not someone Emerald knew well, but Owen had spent a fair amount of time with her and seemed to think she was second only to Theodore Wolseithcrafte in scariness. Emerald, however, was not worried. After all, Grandfather probably came across scary to some people to. Actually, she knew for a fact that he did. Her father's cousin Cory seemed pretty afraid of him. Of course, that might be because Grandfather seemed to have just slightly more respect for Cory's intellect than he did Mother's so that was saying something. Cory had often babysat for them-sometimes spur of the moment, when Mother demanded she needed a break and attempted to drop the lot of them off at Adam Brockert's wand shop where Cory worked. Adam was rather shy so Cory dealt with the customers while Adam made the wands but he seemed to overcome it long enough to tell Mother no when Cory could not. Personally, Emerald thought Cory was a very sweet person. Owen would probably grow up to be just like him, only smarter.
Next Ginger Pierce, someone Owen was a lot more fond of than the medic, spoke. Apparently, her other roommate, the one who was not her cousin's girlfriend, had family from South Korea. That was kind of cool. The Brockerts had been here since before Puritan times so Emerald would have to go pretty far back on the trees of families had married in to find a relative whom hadn't been from America. Although Adam was married to Peizhi Wu's sister, Serenity Brockert had not grown up in China like her sister had.
Next Sawyer's roommate Kir spoke. She didn't know the other boy well but she considered Sawyer a friend. Emerald was rather surprised to hear he had researched the Korean writing system. That sounded like such an Aladren thing to look into. How very interesting. And Amelia had done costumes and history.
Next, she spoke. "I'm Emerald Brockert." She decided against using the formal introduction. With this group, it probably would do more harm than good. Besides, it wasn't as if there were any Eastern Brockerts to get confused with. Brockerts were Brockerts. There were several branches as in "you're so and so's cousin!" or "How are you related to this person?" but it was all one family. They didn't have disreputable branches like the Pierces did. "Admittedly I didn't get to do much studying over break." Blasted siblings and overall family holiday obligations. Not to mention regular holiday homework that had taken priority "But I did look up a little on their magical government and culture" She figured that since they were in the magical world, that was what she should look up " and some history." Emerald hadn't known that Amelia was going to look that up too.
