Mean Girls was one of Laila’s favorite movies. She thought the characters were really horrible, but it was really funny and the perfect sleepover movie. She also loved the candygram idea of sending people candycanes at Christmas. She didn’t like the candycanes being delivered in class in front of everyone though, and she didn’t like that some people didn’t get them, and so she was trying to figure out what to do about that. She always was hesitant to hold a fundraising-style even in case Emmy thought she was stepping on her toes, but it was Christmas and back home Laila’s church had always done a food bank bin to bring food and clothing to in-need families during Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Lent. She was also hesitant because she knew a lot of students didn’t really have pocket money since they were at a boarding school and never had the need to spend much money on anything. Laila herself didn’t bring any money to school at all other than a couple dollars for the Sunday basket each week at church since there was no shop for her to go to or things for her to buy.But she really wanted to do something nice for the students at Sonora and also those who wouldn’t have enough on their Christmas table. She could still participate a little bit in the Christmas giving since she went home for the winter break, but she wanted to expand that to Sonora too. That, however, was where she ran into her main issue. She wanted to host a candygram party, where students could come put names and a sickle or two in a box and send each other candycanes with Christmas-y fun messages on them. But she wanted everyone, even those without much or any pocket money, to be able to participate. Which was why she had come up with her “Support a family, donate a candygram” idea came from.
Gia was her partner-in-crime for Spirit Club so of course Laila wanted to run the idea past her before asking the rest of the Spirit Club for input, and Emmy was heading up a Fundraising Club and Laila didn’t want to make the other girl feel like she was trying to take over her club duties, so she sent out an owl to each of them to meet her in Cascade Hall. She got there early with a decorated shoe-box prototype and a couple plain envelopes and slips of paper. When the other two girls had arrived, Laila smiled at them widely.
“I know there’s a lot going on with midterm coming up, so I’m really happy you could come here today. I had this idea for a Christmas event, but since it involves donating money, I thought I’d make sure you didn’t feel like my club was overtaking yours, Emmy,” Laila said, looking at her classmate so that she would understand why she was there too. “Basically, it’s Christmas time and I think that it’s really important for everyone to get in the giving spirit. There’s this movie I really like which has people sending each other candycanes. I was thinking about doing that here, but I wanted to make payment optional.” Laila Vana White’d the shoebox, envelopes and papers.
“My idea was that first, so no one felt left out, everyone in school would receive a candycane from the Spirit Club, then if people wanted to send one to their friends or something, they could write those names down along with a greeting on these papers and put it in the envelopes and put them in the box. We could use the papers as labels for candycanes which we could have the school owls deliver so no one would feel sad in class if someone got more than they did.” The next part was the bit she was worried Emmy wouldn’t like, so she spoke quickly, wanting to get it over with and to the reactions as quickly as possible.
“I was thinking though, that this could really benefit families in need, but since not everyone has a lot of money even at Sonora, they could choose to put money in their envelope too if they can. That way it’s all kind of anonymous if you donated or not. And then the money could go towards buying food and warm clothes for those who need it this winter, I know fundraising is your thing though, Emmy, so we don’t have to do that part if you’d rather us not, or you guys could help us and it can be a joint effort.”

Being supportive in this endeavor by Gia Donovan
Gia was in the middle of finishing up her potions homework when she received an owl from Laila asking to meet her in Cascade Hall. Gia didn’t normally receive letters from her friends unless it was about a party or some gathering, but she didn’t think much about it because if it had been something serious, Laila wouldn’t have asked her to meet in Cascade where several people could have easily overheard them talking. At least, Gia hoped her friend wasn’t that sort…She put her homework away and stretched. She had no prior arranged appointments with anyone so Gia fixed her appearance in her mirror and left her dorm room to head for the hall. She was rather curious to know what it was that Laila wanted since Sammy didn’t seem to have also received a letter. As she walked though, she realized that it probably had to do with the Spirit Club since that was something they spoke about often. She wasn’t sure why that hadn’t crossed her mind beforehand.
Feeling better about the meet up, Gia entered the hall and looked around until she spotted her friend at a table. Gia smiled and made her way over. “Hello!” She greeted as she took her seat. She was prepared for a discussion but surprise rang on her face when Emilia-Louise joined them. Gia hadn’t had much interaction with her since the previous year and although Gia knew that Laila worked with her for the Halloween party for the pastries, Gia had to wonder if they would be working together for the majority of their club hosting or if this meant that Laila was looking to throw together another holiday party.
She kept quiet as she listened to Laila explain her idea to the two of them. She felt nervous as Laila began it with stating that it dealt with monetary donations. Money was not something that either Gia or her brother had easy access to. Christmas they received maybe a new outfit but not much more than that. There wasn’t any way for her to be able to provide donations for Laila’s cause. Gia did not know why people would send a little candy canes to other people; perhaps it was an American thing? She did appreciate Laila giving the option of anonymity for people even if she did not understand what it was that she necessarily wanted.
“Would we be in charge of handing out the candy canes that the students place into the box?” Gia asked; trying to find her roll in this. “Whatever you decide to do, I will help where I can.” She added so that Laila knew she supported her.
