Responding to your owl [Tag Shino] by Jamie Park

Jamie was pretty bored by the prospect of the ball. Everyone was all in a flap about who was going with who, and what everyone would be wearing, both of which were deeply boring subjects. Not that Jamie wasn’t interested in girls. Girls were definitely interesting. He dreamt about them and if he hadn’t been a backrow kind of boy already he would have become one as it gave him the best vantage point for checking out their backsides in class. Not that the school robes exactly gave a flattering view of these but it was better than nothing. And nothing was exactly what Jamie was getting from the girls of Sonora. The ball might have been exciting if he thought any of them would sneak out back and make out with him, but they all seemed to be wanting to dance and stare at the moon and sigh over how romantic everything was.

He hadn’t really been interested in asking a girl at all, given that he couldn’t think of one he’d get anything much from. Joella had been his best bet… She was a prefect, so needed a partner, and she didn’t seem totally stuck up, unlike most of the rest of the girls. Plus they were Quidditch buddies. But then Lionel had got there first. Which left Jamie thinking the whole thing wasn’t worth the time or effort.

Then he had received Shino’s owl. He regarded Shino as his closest friend - not that he’d ever admit that to her - even though they seemed to go hot and cold. He just figured it was a product of being in different houses and different years, which meant they moved in and out of classes together. He didn’t think Shino was going to make out with him - she was way too proud for that, and like he was going to admit he liked her (which he did in that she was a) female, b) had a heartbeat and c) wasn’t like… fat or anything, even if she wasn’t as hot as any of the blonde girls. Jamie liked blonde girls the best). He guessed it would be kind of fun, and probably his best option, but he hadn’t wanted to seem desperate, so he had let her message sit.

A few days later, he saw her in the Cascade Hall, and dropped down next to her.

“Hey Shino-face,” he greeted. Given that she suffixed his name all the time, he’d never seen why he shouldn’t return the show of friendship. “How’s it going?” he asked casually, as if there should be no reason why she was expecting anything more than a friendly chat about nothing in particular.

Seems more like procrastinating to me. by Shinohara Uzume

Uzu sat at the table blowing on her mango lychee tea. It was an odd combination but she was feeling adventurous that day, thus the unusual tea choice. She took a small sip. The smell was delectable, but once the liquid touched her pink lips her face scrunched in protest. “Yuck,” she mumbled placing the tea on the other side of her books. A pleasant scent could not make up for a horrible taste. Such a shame, she thought trying to place her attention back to her potion's homework. Unfortunately all she could do was read the same paragraph in her textbook over and over, not even able to get past the first page of the chapter. It wasn’t her english that was the problem, but her own inner thoughts that distracted her.

Why hasn’t that little jerk replied yet? she pondered as her eyes pretended to read the paragraph. Was I too pushy? Or maybe I am, she paused before shaking her head in protest. No, no, no. I’m awesome, she reassured herself borrowing the American phrase. But I can be a little traditional I suppose? she continued, associating traditional with boring. She glanced down at her robes and the stylish Japanese clothing that laid beneath it. Although they were more casual than a kimono, they were still loads more formal than a pair of jeans. She let out a light sigh as her mind continued to go back and forth between inadequacy and confidence, neither making any strides over the other.

As if sensing he was on her mind, Uzu was greeted by none other than Jamie-kun. She felt her eye twitch at his sudden greeting, a grimace close to forming on her face involuntarily. She was a little bitter that he hadn’t replied right away to her proposal. Thankfully her pride was too strong to allow herself to become openly emotional over such trivial a thing as an invitation. Brushing her long hair behind her ear, she turned confidently to face the cause of her mental annoyance. To her surprise, Jamie-kun was much more pleasing to the eye than she remembered. Although his personality was just as troublesome as ever.

“And here I thought the bitter taste in my mouth was tea, but its just you,” she stated with a contradicting smile. Perhaps she was a little more than bothered by his negligence. “But to answer your question, I’m fine. I was just working on some potions homework,” she stated, nonchalantly glancing at the blank potions worksheet. "But I'm not really getting any work done. Want to do it for me?" she asked with a cheeky grin. She wasn't sure why she wasn't just calling him out for his lack of reply, but some emotion hidden inside of her wanted him to bring it up on his own. The desire to feel wanted was a human emotion not even Uzu could escape.

I know you are, but what am I? by Jamie

“Bitter?” Jamie replied, raising his eyebrows, “Why would I be causing a bitter taste?” he asked, although he thought he knew the reason why Shino might be less than pleased with him right now. Still, it wasn’t a very nice way to greet a friend, and he was interested to see how she got out of that one without just throwing a little female strop about the ball. He was quite content to play with her for a while before accepting the offer. It was more fun that way, and Shino had always been happy enough to give as good as she got when they messed with each other. He didn’t see why this should be any different.

“I am afraid you menial CATS work is beneath me, for I am a serious scholar of advanced materials now,” he intoned, with mock dignity, stretching back and cracking his neck (mostly because he actually needed to though the fact that a lot of people flinched at the habit made it all the more appealing). “I suppose I could give you some pointers, if you’re finding it too difficult though…” he added, pretty sure that Shino’s pride wouldn’t stand any offer that implied she was stupid. If she really was stuck, and willing to stoop that low to get help, it wasn’t as if her work was going to be that difficult for him anyway.

My little plaything by Shino

Uzu wondered if she went a little far with her tea comment. Making a mental note as to never drink that flavor again, seeing as it caused her to become so obviously peeved. Jamie-kun seemed pretty clueless, but it could easily be a front. Then again, knowing Jamie-kun, it was definitely a front.

“Oh come on, you and I both know you aren’t the ‘sweet’ senpai type. Obviously the opposite word ‘bitter' would be the correct description right?” she asked, trying to play it off as her misunderstanding of English phrases. Her patent Shinohara Innocent Face, complete a slightly furrowed brow, and soft eyes was one of her favorite expressions to use in these types of situations. Although she never thought she would preform it for Jamie-kun, she was willing to take on the challange. Even if he didn’t buy her naivety hopefully he wouldn’t think she was really as annoyed at him as she actually was.

“For someone with such a big head its amazing you can’t hear better,” she said chuckling at her own cleverness. “I never implied to be having trouble, I just don’t want to do it. But thanks for the offer I suppose. Perhaps you can be a sweet Senpai when you try,” she added playfully poking his shoulder, feeling a little like her cat. Every time Yoru caught a mouse, she would play gently with it for a while before she inevitably got bored of it’s presence and proceeded to bite its head off. Unlike Yoru and her mouse however, Jamie was the type of plaything of which she never got bored. He often made her angry, happy, and curious for sure, but never once had she felt like she had better things to do when he popped into her day. That said, she still had the urge to bop Jamie-kun on the head when he was being annoying.

That could be fun... by Jamie

He was bitter because he wasn’t sweet, and this was all just about Shino getting her word play off because English wasn’t her first language? He smirked in response to her oh-so-innocent face.

“I’ve watched you turn that face on teachers after slipping something into your neighbour’s cauldron,” he reminded her. “It won’t work on me.” Still, he wasn’t sure how to come back to that, any more than just calling her out that he didn’t believe her excuse, so he left that just hanging in the air, hoping it was enough.

“It does look pretty dull,” he nodded, when she clarified that she could do her homework, she merely didn’t want to. That was an exceptionally familiar feeling. Homework, until he’d got to RATS level, had never exactly been hard, it had always just been a bit boring and pointless. He also wasn’t sure what to make of her poking him and calling him sweet. It wasn’t exactly… unwelcome. It was like when the team had all congratulated him. He knew with Shino it was probably an act but it still felt nice. He had honestly thought he’d have girls flocking around him… Attractive guy, star Seeker. And it galled him that he didn’t, especially as he could think of a few things he would enjoy getting up to with them. Even if Shino’s interest was being faked right now, that was better than the literal zero he was getting from the rest of Sonora’s females.

“That’s why all the girls love me,” he grinned in response to her compliment. The world and persona that Jamie had created for himself were pretty spectacularly failing to be matched by reality, but that wasn’t any reason to admit to it. In fact, it was all the more reason to keep it up. Anything else would just be humiliating.

Indeed it could. by Shino

"So I suppose you have," Uzu replied in response with a smile. He was just so annoying. Annoying that he always had something to say or some stupid comeback. However what annoyed her most about her friend was how she couldn't stay mad at him for long, even when he was being a brat. She thought back to their first meeting in Potions. It was honestly a little daunting with all the foreignness, both in language and surroundings. However Jamie made it enjoyable. She wanted to ask if he could continue to be her Potions partner when she entered the advance classes, but decided to stop herself before the words formed in her throat. Pride was such a strong emotion.

Uzume wasn't sure what she had been expecting from Jamie when she bridged the distance between them in the form of a poke. The response was... a little bit of a letdown if she was honest with herself. Then again Jamie-kun never did what she expected, so she couldn't say she was that surprised when all she got was a grin and a cocky comment in return. Idiot. Even so, his simple statement was enough to cause her to burst into laughter.

"What?" she asked incredulously, turning to face Jamie fully. This boy really did have his head in the clouds. "And where did you get that idea?" she asked through chuckles, "Your mother?"

Experiencing her budding American side was something Uzu was beginning to indulge in frequently. Showcasing American habits and phrases still wasn't really the most comfortable thing for Uzu, but she liked to try it when she felt the moment called for it. These days she mostly used them when talking to Liac-kun since he tended to fall into slang quite often during casual conversation. She heard him use a similar comeback once, but didn't entirely understand it at the time. It took a trip to the Muggle Studies section of the Library to decode the ridiculous phrase. Although the article indicated that 'your mother' jokes were quite old, she thought it actually fit her comeback nicely.

Just ask nicely... by Jamie

His mother? Why was she bringing his mother into this? Ok, Jamie played the part of a good mummy’s boy when he was home, when he had to, but he certainly didn’t let on to that at Sonora. He liked to talk about how he could pull the wool over his mother’s eyes. How he got away with stepping out of line whilst Ji-Eun didn’t dare. He didn’t really get Shino’s attempt at a joke, thinking instead that she was trying to tease him in some way.

“Of course my mom loves me… I never let her know half of what I get up to,” he grinned.

“And all the girls love a great Quidditch player. Pretty sure I’m in a few good books for beating out Teppenpaw.” Ok, the fact that Liliana had hugged him, and everyone else had been… broadly nice to him for once wasn’t exactly worth bragging about, but there was no point in letting those pesky details get in the way of a good narrative. And anyway, on the whole, things had to be on the up for him.

“Was it that that sparked your renewed interest in me, or just my good looks and natural charisma?” he teased.

OOC - given that Jamie said he’s getting nothing from the girls in an earlier post, I’m assuming this is set before the Quidditch championship

I don't do nice. by Shino

“Etto,” Uzume paused shaking her head, “Nevermind.” Perhaps it wasn’t a very good joke? Stupid Liac can’t even get those right. Then again, perhaps it was Jamie that was the idiot. No, she mused, they are both idiots.

“Please,” Uzu said holding up a hand to Jamie’s assumption, “I don’t need a reason as shallow as you playing Quidditch. I’m a Seeker too you know. Even if it is for Crotalus,” she added with disdain. The Teppalus team was a million times more fun. She always thought the Teppenpaws balanced out the Crotali well. It was a shame they had to be separate.

“So I suppose it is your personality that saves you. As…odd as is," Uzu stated for lack of a better term, "it matches mine well." She knew full and well she wasn’t the easiest person to get along with, but neither was her company. “As for your looks,” she continued with a grin, playfully eyeing him up and down, “I suppose they aren’t so bad, although I expect you to dress yourself up a little for the ball.” Having grown tired of ignoring the elephant in the room, Uzu just decided to skip asking him again to the ball. Nothing wrong with having a little self confidence even if it was a shot in the dark. Besides, she figured she could always curse him if he turned her down.

Do you do very, very nasty? by Jamie

Jamie quirked an eyebrow at her ‘even for Crotalus’ remark.

“I thought Crotalus was the respectable house? You’re not honoured to represent them without a bunch of group-hugging, let’s-all-be-friends Tepps on your back?” he asked, genuinely curious as to why Shino was so apparently unhappy with actually having her own team to play for. As far as he was concerned, the whole combined team thing had just been embarrassing for everyone concerned. “I mean, I understand how it’s not as good as being a Pecari, but surely it’s better than being Teppalcrotimonkeycircus or whatever you guys called yourselves.”

“Wow…. slow down with the flattery there. It’s going to go to my head,” he said sarcastically, as Shino calculated his virtues to amount to it being odd that his personality was a plus, basically only being so because it was weird enough to gel with her. At least her own attempt at a backhanded compliment made her a freak too.

“Oh!” Jamie exclaimed, slapping his hand to his forehead as the mock-memory hit him full force. “That’s right. You wrote me about that,” ha, he’d made her bring it up first. “I guess replying slipped my mind. No wonder you had your panties in a bunch when I sat down! Sure, I’ll go with you. Could be fun,” he grinned.
