[Staff lounge] Who's the third wheel now, then? [Cont. FnF]
by Rory Taransay
Luckily for Rory, Tabitha was a very nice person and didn’t push his mention of Amelle. He was sure he’d end up telling her all about it at some point, especially if alcohol was in their future, but for now he wasn’t in the right frame of mind to confront that particular heartbreak.
He laughed at the idea of people finding out about Mary and Tabitha’s relationship on their own. “What, let them catch you rumpled and disreputable in the corridor at night? I can just imagine Mortimer’s expression!” A noise sounded in the corridor behind Tabitha, and Rory suddenly realised that the absent member of the newly-discovered couple had come to join them, and that she hadn’t realised Rory was there. With a gleeful expression, he waited for Tabitha’s no doubt embarrassed reaction, but sadly his fun was cut short by Mary realising his presence.
He felt less glee at seeing Mary embarrassed. Laughing at Tabitha was one thing, as he’d known her a long time and they were well on their way to becoming good friends. Mary, however, was someone he didn’t know quite as well, and he sympathised with rather than enjoyed her embarrassment.
“Oh yes, it is shaping up to be a lovely evening! I was just having a somewhat illuminating conversation with our dear Tabitha here,” Rory replied, not sympathetic enough to resist a little dig, and also thinking that he should clue Mary in to the fact that he now knew what was going on.

If Tabitha hadn't had her hands full with her boots and her wand, she would've been able to hide her face in her hands. She was now absolutely convinced that the universe was deliberately working against her, determined to cause her to die of shame. If Selina or Mortimer showed up now, she'd sign her own death certificate herself. She was absolutely convinced that her cheeks couldn't go a darker shade of red.
She also felt mortified on Mary's behalf because truthfully, the entire situation was Tabitha's fault. If she hadn't been so absent-minded (translation: sleepy), she wouldn't have forgotten her papers in Mary's rooms and the woman wouldn't have come looking for her. If she'd have taken the time to inspect her appearance and tidy herself up, she might've been able to kid Rory that she and Mary had been simply sharing a late night drink.
Which wouldn't have been a lie because they had. They'd just done other things too.
Now unable to look either of them in the eye, Tabitha decided that the wall next to her was very interesting. Maybe it was a magical wall and she'd be absorbed by it.
"He knows," she told Mary, though it was probably a bit late for such a comment.

Well at least you'll be a cute corpse.
by Mary Brooding
Mary looked back and forth, first from her person (girlfriend? fiancee? something else? whatever), and then to her colleague. Rory had always been kind to Tabitha and that more than made up for their fairly few interactions outside a brief run in in the library. If Tabitha liked Rory, Rory was likable.
She was pretty sure this was terrible logic, as Tabitha wasn't known to be the most skilled people-person and her character judgment was almost certainly flawed, but it was soothing to think so anyway.
All at once, Mary realized that she had the power in the situation and she could either make everything okay or make nothing okay. Rory looked amused, although there were clear signs of vicarious embarrassment on his face, and Tabitha looked guilty. So nobody looked mad! The most uncomfortable expression was probably her own, and she shifted that into a sheepish smile as she raised her eyebrow at Rory and tried to remind herself that her nightgown was still less revealing than some people's day clothes. "Be confident" pounded in her head as she took up a teasing tone.
"I'd hope he could figure that one out," Mary admitted with a playful laugh. "Although I think it would be fun to hear what other explanations you might've tried for this particular situation."
